I would use it. I would be careful and responsible about how i use it.

No matter how responsible you are. The death note is destined to destroy anyone who uses it. Light exercised great caution when using the death note and look what happened to him.

Personally, I would give it back to the God of Death and wish him the best of luck.

Nope, it lets you be creative. After writing the name, you must write the specifics of the death within 6 minutes and 40 seconds. You can orchestrate an accident if you want. However, if what you write is impossible (blasting your target to the moon, having him commit suicide by jumping off the Eiffel Tower when he's on the other side of the world, etc), it just reverts to the default heart attack.

I'd still rather do it myself. How else will they know who's killing them and what they're dying for? I want them to know these things before they die. Or else they might think they got away with whatever terrible thing they did.

What is this thing from anyway? A book or show or something? How come I never heard of it?

It's an anime/manga. One of the better ones, I can assure you that. Well, the whole point of it all is that you can kill someone, anyone, covertly, without any evidence pointing back to you. As long as you have the name and the face (so that you can kill the person you want without killing someone with the same name) of your target, you're good to go. And as for them not knowing who killed them after they did something terrible? Let's just say that Karma's a *****.

One of two things:Either there's a hostage situation which simply cannot go wrong (president's been kidnapped, nuke launch threatened, etc) or being attacked and having time to write.

You can write in your own time of death, as well as the cause, though.

I don't watch/read much of the series, but I recall the main character writing a 2-to-3 page long one describing a man getting on a bus, jacking it, demanding he be driven somewhere, going insane and shooting at the air, then running off the bus. (I believe he was then hit by a car. Not sure.)

OT: Me? I'd use it... Not entirely sure on whom. But I can guarantee that at least a few people would be kissing my feet within a year of me getting it.

EDIT: I'd like to change my answer. I would use it to write something to the extent of "Osama Bin Laden: Boards a plane on xx/xx/xx, flies to [insert a town near me here]. A government tip causes the plane to be tailed by US jets, so he leaps out of the plane with a parachute, while over [my home address here]. The parachute fails to open, and he dies on impact, with his head intact.". I then claim the $25 mill bounty on his head.
