Poll: If you were shopping for a current generation gaming machine NOW which of these would you pick?

I have a friend who is thinking about taking the plunge into the current generation now that his ps2 finally broke. He would just get a ps3 if they were backwards compatible but as that isn?t the case, he?s shopping around. All the systems had a real rocky start this generation (PC had Vista, 360 had the rrod, ps3 had an absurd price, wii had the most shovelware & was rare, and onlive had a monthly fee) but are starting to settle in now.

I know that if I was shopping around now, I wouldn?t go with my original choice. How about you?

Does anyone here have OnLive? How is it?
He?s seriously considering that because he figures that the money it would cost to get a new pc would offset the fact that you don?t actually own a copy of the game which is the case with a lot of the games anyway.
He isn't at all considering a Wii, so if that's your choice, please explain.

And please keep in mind that this is the only site I would post a question like this on because I know this can be civilized here and not just turn into a flame war.

If he's looking for one to get into in the long run (not having to worry about backwards compatibility, monthly fees, etc) - get a PC. Work on it or buy a decent prebuilt gaming PC, and you only need about £100 of upgrades once a decade. Unless you always get the new OS.

I had some unexpected funds last month that would have enabled me to either buy one or both of the current consoles (no, I don't consider the Wii a real console) or buy a new and better pc. Since I play several MMOs, and several of my favourite games are PC exclusives, it was an easy decision to make.

Removing features is a bad habit of Sony's.
PS2 support sort of makes sense, since it's been so many years and there are now a lot of PS3 titles.

Removing OtherOS support from PS3 Slim was the dumbest decision ever.
'cos the PS3 was the only console nobody bothered to hack for 3 years, 'cos the real hackers could already run Linux on it.
Soon as they couldn't anymore, they tore the PS3 security to shreds.

They had some hardware issues and needed to take it out to lower the price. They are working on a USB add on for it.

OT: PCs are good, but some games are just crap on them. Just Cause 2 was fun on a friend's 360 but on the computer it is painful.
If he truly wants a system and not a PC, I will have to say PS3 just because they are going to add the backwards compatibility and free online gaming.

Yea. I think this is the first generation where some games work worse on the PC. GTA4 on the pc was a bit of a nightmare too while the PC version of San Andreas was far superior.

Are they going to make a usb addon that plays ps2 discs? Another thing scaring my friend away from sony is that both of us are under the impression that they're going to start selling ps2 games on psn rather than bringing back BC. My friend would be unlikely to use the other os feature but the fact that they do seem to take away more features than they add is a big negative point.

I think I need to post a different poll as cost is probably the biggest factor the decision.

Have them all, except Wii. But I should've coughed the extra cash for the backwards compatible PS3. Ohhh Hindsight *shakes fist*. So I"d say PC>PS3>360. Only because if my Xbox breaks one more time, it will become one part of Athena's Blade.

They took it out of the newest version of the console so that they stopped losing so much money.

I'd say a PC or a 360.

You get the system that all your friends have. This has been the standard measurement of 'which platform do I get' for years. Nothing has changed.

pc - as i don't have a tv, because there's only nutrition-drained, gastro-intestinally processed biomass to watch, i'd need to buy both a new home-console and a tv. and somewhere to put at least the tv onto.

so, no to consoles for me ^^
also, there are only few console-only titles that would actually tempt me; everything else can be played on a pc, so why bother ^^

I'd go with PS3. I'm not willing to pay for the online fees for the 360 and if I got a PC it would probably end up full of viruses and become useless to me so PS3 would be my best option.

I'd go with a PC.
Mainly because I already have a PS3 and owning both a PS1 and PS2 leaves me no problem with the backwards compatibility and the 360 doesn't leave much interest for me. I like playing games on the PC and while my current PC is good, it isn't great, so a PC that would easily handle modern day releases such as Mass Effect, Metro 2033 and Fallout: New Vegas would be nice to have so I don't have to worry so much if my computer could handle it

PC, its a bit late in the XBox and Wii's lifetimes to join the party - except via a second hand system anyway. The PS3 you could make an argument for, but its not really a match for a gaming PC.

That's unless you have a love of a console exclusive, such as GT5.. ...the sole reason I own a PS3 at all. Uhg.

I would pick the 360 because it's cheap, it's the target platform for multi-platform games (whereas people often complain about shoddy PC or PS3 ports), and it has the best user interface.

Honestly, though, all these options are roughly comparable (assuming your friend has the fast Internet connection required for OnLive and enough disposable income to buy a gaming PC). Most relevant games are multi-platform anyway.

For reference, I own a gaming PC, 360 and PS3; I play them all on my computer monitor, so my sports-loving roommate can have the TV to himself.
