You need to keep in mind that we are talking about an Arcade XBLA game here. It fits into a different category. I mean obviously a DOS-game back in 1990 could score a perfect 10 right? A DS game could in theory too right? It depends on the platform, and if the game sets out to achieve it's goals and achieves everyone of them and more so then it deserves to be applauded for success. The review isn't for all gamers really, it's for people who want to play arcade / casual / pac man games and to inform those people if it is a good remake or not. Apparently it's an outstanding remake.

IGN always follows what everyone else says, they were dead to me a while ago.

Personally, GameInformer is getting worse. Their Sacred Cow Barbecue was lame, and their 30 characters that defined a decade is just abysmally bad. GLaDOS and Master Chief beat Auron and Phoenix Wright.
Of Course MC is going to beat auron and Pheonix wright.

IN their defence how many people know about Master Chief and Halo and how many people know about the rest of the characters? People might know about Auron, but I wouldnt exactly say he was a decade defining character, Glados is better known and portal was an important game of the dacade, but still isnt as well known as MC. Plus in terms of poularity and importance, Halo is up at the top for this decade, it changed the face of console shooters, the trend for modern shooters and helped set up the multiplayer scene on consoles plus Master Chief is recognizable to most people.

And yeah, Pheonix Wright, although cool, no one is going to know who he is outside of core gamers.

That is sort of odd. Also, is any game really worth a 10? I mean in a philosophical sense all games strive to be perfect but do any really reach that coveted position? :p
Personally I would consider portal a perfect game as I honestly can't think of a bad thing to say about that it, but aside from that I agree with you

They are done in comparison to games in their genre or based on what they are, not just an over encompasing score.

When you see this list of games, you most likely think "this is a list of some of the best games ever made
Fallout 3 is ok..but the rest are god awful. And did you play Pac-Man C.E DX? That game is awesome.
Wow..really? I'm trying to decide whether you're trolling or not, please for the love of god say I missed the sarcasm ><
I'm not. I'm stating an opinion. Which in this site doesn't matter apparently.
Not when you dont back it up, just because it's an opinion doesnt make it immune to scrutiny.

You did say 4 games which at least 2 are held as pinnicles of the gaming world were god awful, people are going to call you out on it, I could accept you saying that you didnt enjoy it, which is fair enough, might not be your thing but to say those five games are terrible is akin to flame bating, as they are all loved by the gaming community, and viewed objectively are fantastic games. It'd be like saying movies such as Citizen Kane or Fight Club crap, sure it'd be an opinion but it would be misjudged, and there would be little you could do to defend that opinion. Out of curiosty, what would you rank as your top five games?
This. Exactly how I feel. People don't seem to realize that saying you didn't personally enjoy a game and calling a game utter shit are two completely different things. If you say a game is crap, then you had better have some hardcore facts to back up that claim.

I personally didn't like Red Dead Redemption, but I would never call the game horrible because it is far from being so.

So you're going to hate on IGN for loving Pac Man, boycott them, yet continue to read Game Informer, which is owned by Gamestop?

IGN has been dead to me yeasr and years for now. They are very biased in their reviews and give out "Game of the Year" awards to games that clearly don't deserve them. They hype up multi-million games and then give them 10/10. When it comes to famous franchises that do the same thing over and over again they give them great scores and give all others shit. I believed in the phrase "numbers mean nothing" way before Yahtzee said it. Also yahtzee may not review games like other people do, but he still reviews games.

I mean seriously IGN just because you can't prnounce Cao Cao doesn't mean other people can't.

Actually try the game before ripping it apart, from one picture it looks awesome. Sure they graded blatantly better games but IGN will be IGN.

They died to me the second they started copy/pasting the press release for games, sticking a random number between 9 and 10 at the end, and calling it a review.

So, day zero.

(Come to think of it, what reviewer - gaming or otherwise - can you think of that don't do that?)

you cant hold a arcade game to the same standards as a full fledged game. arcade games have to use less data and thus resort to fulfilling cheap, quick thrills. i cant imagine a single arcade game you would spend 100 hours or more on but i can think of numerous console/ PC games where 100 hours isnt even enough to finish the single player

maybe IGN is a crapy company but i can see the logic in giving an arcade game like pacman a 10 and fallout a 9. the way i like to think about games and their reviews is i like to ask myself "is there something either missing, broken, or could be made better?" if i have a hard time answerring this question i consider it a serious contender for a perfect 10

Pac-Man Championship Edition DX does what it is meant to do, give you as much packman as you could possibly want. i just think you are comparing apples to oranges; i would compare a shooter to an RPG so why should i compare them to an arcade game?

Well the game is pretty good but it has an undeserved 10 score when games like New Vegas got 8.5's.

That statement is so obviously incorrect it doesn't even qualify as sarcasm.
I'm sorry but I've just never met anyone... all my friends hate his guts.
However, after looking at some gameplay of the DX edition i have to say, looks like fun. Not "Borderlands-I-just-blew-the-torso-of-a-midget kind of fun but... Shitloads-of-fun-20-minutes-a-day kind of fun.

I used to actually listen to what IGN said, but they don't know how to do an opinionated review. Like most big gamesites (Gamespot, Gametrailers) they just say what people expect them to say. Havent been to the site in years.

I do not feel like going into detail, thus I this shall be short. Reviews are based upon the genre the game represents, not gaming as a whole. Mass Effect is a 9.5 to the RPG genre, the same as Halo: Reach is to the FPS genre. This does not necessary mean they are superior to another game. You cannot compare different genres and therefore reviews are restricted to those specific categories.

When you see this list of games, you most likely think "this is a list of some of the best games ever made (Don't bother arguing that a game doesn't belong there, that isn't the point)

What would your first reaction be if I threw onto that list, Pac-Man Championship Edition DX
According to IGN, I would be applauded.

When I load up my computor and look for gaming news, I jump to 4 sites. Escapist, Gameinformer, Kotaku and IGN. I have come to expect the most up to date and accurate news and reviews. I am now regretfully announcing that I have to pull IGN from that list. They gave the new XBLA pac-man game a 10

A perfect 10

When I see a 10, I jump to metacritic and if that number isn't above 97, the giver of the 10 is in serious trouble. 10s are reserved for the best of the best, on the singular page of the history books in a hundred years that mentions video games as a sector of pop culture, these are the games whose pictures will be there.

I don't know what you think, but a random Pac Man re-release, seriously!

IGN considers this better than all of the games mentioned above:

http://xbox360.ign.com/objects/077/077723.html
the fact the game got a 10 means it full fills its niche market and more GTA offers loads of content for a immersion adult game
bayonetta for overally epic hack and slash games
and so on and so on

Considering this is an XBLA game I honestly wouldn't loose too much sleep over it.
Odds are the score is supposed to be relative to other arcade type games and not to gaming as a whole. The problem is that most arcade games really can't compare to other games. I mean I doubt that anyone who had a choice would pick any of the arcade games over a full AAA title.
Isn't this like special treating people with difficulties? Why should XBLA be singled out? Why shouldn't it be judge on the same terms as SC2,HL,CoD or any other AAA game?If I was to make a game would it be a 10/10 on a scale just for my game then? Just stupid thinking T.T"

While at it, no game deserves a 10, that would imply that every pixel in the game is perfect, which I'm 100% there is no game that got that.

Slightly off topic but what makes Half Life 2 so brilliant. I loved the first one mind you, It's one of the best fps games I've ever played. I didn't even finish the second. The whole thing was so average. Arcade shooting, a painfully slow story and bland, lifeless environments. Somebody tell me what makes it so great.
