Well, when I first joined I had a generic World of Warcraft avatar from the basic ones the website offers.

Around 1.5k posts or so I started going with the USS Defiant from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine for two or three avatars. Then I decided I wanted a gif, and thought what could me more mesmerizing than PonPonPon? So I found a decidedly appropriate gif from the music video and had TopazFusion work it down to avatar size.

I've also got a creepy "grinning moon-face moving towards the camera in an abandoned parking garage-type structure" gif that I used for a day or so which Topaz also made. Aw, I should've switched to that one for Halloween...

Hm, losing recognition by changing avatar you say?
But how can I lose that which I don't have?

Holy shit, I recognize both of your old avatars haha:( y u change?!
The spider's cute.
You recognized me? Fame at last!

Someone once commented that they saw my spider and thought it was a frog. After studying it for a minute I saw what he meant, and then couldn't stop seeing it!

As for changing to my "bunny motif" that's an old affectation for me. I was looking through Google Images for fun, ran across an "Evil Bunny" picture and got the bug to change avatars again.

I don't know if I'll stay with my Punisher Bunny avatar I'm using right now.
Oh dear god, i see a hairy frog too now...

I'd stick with the punisher bunny, at least for a bit. I like it.

I have a compromise with my avatar, mine as always based on the same theme (Laughing Skull Face) to keep recognition but I alter the background and accessories a couple times a month on average if you include seasonal / festive variations.
Exactly what this fellow said. Although I have been lazy with the variations lately.

I play around with mine, although Elevator Guy is gonna be around for quite a while yet.
I don't really care about the recognition factor of avatars, I'd rather people recognise me as "That guy who does reviews sometimes."

But no one does. :p
Never recognized you as the guy who does reviews, I always heard everything in Dr. Cox's voice.
and yes, I keep bringing this up in the hopes you go back to that much loved avatar.

OT: I tend to stick with a theme of the SSV Normandy, however I haven't posted enough to actually be noticed so I'm guessing no one really cares.

Normally, my avatar is Vivi from Final Fantasy IX. Although I do change periodically depending on what game I'm really into at the moment. And so far, that would be the Fallout series. Namely New Vegas.

I don't think I post frequently enough to be very recognizable anyway, so it isn't that huge a deal.

I'm not allowed to change mine.

I've been told that if that were ever to happen, there would be rioting in the streets.

People would die.

Do you want people to die?

I don't.
Will there be looting? Cause I like looting...

I change my avatar every so often, usually to something that is somewhat funny.

Godammit people, stop sticking Bacon in the polls. That option immediately causes my mouse pointer to gravitate to the little circle beside it before zooming to the confirm button. Seriously. It's becoming disturbing how much people want others' enjoyment of Bacon to be revealed.

OT:Hmm I might have seen that spider Avatar before and I've definitely seen your Cthulhu for Overlord Avatar before [sub]and subsequently placed it amongst my list of people whom I immediately mentally respond with, when I see them start a new thread, "Oh look new guy has started another thread." *Tallies it up with the others* "Hmm, the guy with the demon avatar is still winning..."[/sub]

Myself, when I first joined the Escapist I just stuck with my XBL avatar as it was the simplest avatar that I could get without trawling through the image archives on here. Then when I started frequenting the RP forum my avatars began changing after a while. But now I've got my current avatar and I'm not changing it until I find a good picture for my next RP character or until I make a compilation image of a bunch of characters... with .gif elements.

Now let's see other peo- wait a second...

The names and images don't match. WHAT IS HAPPENING!

Did people recognize my Nic Cage avatar? Does the current Milla Jovovich one leave you confused and ever so slightly worried?

I don't think I am well enough known for my avatar to me well known too...

I rarely if ever use Avatars on message forums, I have my reasons for doing so, but also I've noticed few people (including me) seem to pay much attention to them. The odds of me recognizing someone by their Avatar are slim to none.

I change my avatars often, and I'm usually recognized as "that guy with the terrifying avatars of doom."

Including this one.

ESPECIALLY this one.

I don't post enough to be recognized. I'm probably king lurker. It sometimes gets me killed in epicmafia :-(

Besides that though, why should I give up my hats?

I've been here for years, and never abandoned my masked man. I don't want to lose my recognition.
