I don't really mind that Sterling is arrogant, or that his opinions (at least the ones he has presented on The Escapist) haven't been particularly well thought-out, or that he has a poor presenting style, or that I disagree with most of what he says. These are all very subjective judgements, and I and others could well hold them about other contributers on this site, without thinking that they should be removed.

On the other hand, I do have a problem with his sexism and outright misogyny, and I don't think that that is defensible, even as "humour" or "satire". (I really don't want to rehash those arguments here, you can see my--and others'--comments on his second video.)

So while Sterling's show does have potential in other respects (his most recent two videos are at least passable, and some other things I have seen of him are rather good), I'm not convinced that he won't pull some more sexist bullshit, as he has done in the past.

I really think Jim Sterling is a horrible reviewer as even if I agree with his final score, I won't agree with his reasoning for that score. With that said, I gotta say that I've agreed with most of the points he makes in his "Jimquisitions." The Sony one was obviously not very serious and he was just saying what he basically wants Sony to do (irregardless of the PSN downtime) and what games he wants to see made, nothing more. The constant firmware updates are annoying when all Sony is trying to do is buy themselves a week or so before the hackers hack the new firmware. Either release a firmware that the hackers can't do anything with (if possible) or only release firmwares that actually add features.

The guy is literally drenched in sarcasm and humor, so if you're easily offended or take a few things too seriously, he might be rough around the edges.

For example, many women hate him because he is sexist apparently, which is fine, we all are in someway, but he made fun of things when he wrote in his journal that certain 'figurines' must be bought because...well...they're sexy figurines.

If you read the journal entry carefully, you'll see that he was trolling and just being sarcastic, but stupidly enough, some people really pick up on that as being legit.
It really doesn't matter if he's being 'legit' or not. What matters is the jokes he told. I doubt very much the women who call Jim a sexist pig honestly think he's being legit when he says what he says, but I can assume that they really don't appreciate the subject matter of the jokes he makes in and of themselves.

For instance, Jim Sterling has made jokes about RAPE. Now I don't know about you, but I think that rape is one subject matter that should be taken a little bit more seriously then that, but apparently he decided he was being funny and made off glib remarks about it. Jokingly demanding that games have more rape in them.

I don't care if he tries to defend that as sarcasm or comedy, there are some things that CANNOT BE DEFENDED and I think that's one of them. The attitude towards it is very obnoxious and frankly, it's really, really insensitive to make jokes like that. It's one thing to make demands to see big breasted women in games but something else entirely to even pretend to be demanding rape in games.

Plus when he was doing a bit about a fighting game he decided to randomly drop a little 'humorous' and completely out of place anecdote about domestic abuse. Saying that the fact that the women's clothes fall off as they get hit should be 'great fun for fans of domestic abuse in any case'.

God, I hate it so much when people think they can just stick the word 'sarcasm' onto a joke, no matter how tasteless and think it's suddenly okay. I sometimes wonder if that guy who played Kramer on Seinfeld tried to use the 'I was being sarcastic' excuse when he called out the N word to a black man's face.

You can still try to argue that he isn't a true sexist but to me, the fact that at some point where he was writing those articles he made a conscious decision to put them in. That somewhere in that mind of his he apparently thought they were funny, or that others would percieve them as funny. That the simple act of throwing around jokes about domestic abuse and rape and violence towards women in general was something that made for excellent joke material.
And that even though in some cases they had NOTHING, I repeat NOTHING to do with the main point of his articles, they just had to be added there.

He is not a satirist or a comedian or some kind of bold politically incorrect joke writer, he's just an arsehole. Taking incredibly sensitive issues that mean a lot to people and just throwing them around and calling them jokes. Frankly I'm shocked that one of the ways people have chosen to defend this is by saying that:
"He's just trolling!"
So what? The fact that he makes insensitive and obnoxious remarks, makes articles dedicated to mocking women and in some cases making an image of glorifying the act of abuse of women is now suddenly okay because the real reason he's doing it is just to rile people up and get them angry?
That's seriously a defendable position to take? I mean one can argue that South Park does something similar but when South Park is mean and rile people up, they do it with a bit of boldness and do it in a challenging way that actually makes you think about things.
All Jim's writing does is just piss people off, if the complaints are any indication.

Plus, regardless of the articles, the insensitive jokes and the general troll-like attitude... the dude has still made some very unpleasant public remarks to people over twitter. Telling one girl that she was a Femenazi Slut and asking her if her husband knew was using the internet. Not to mention lashing out really early on in the debate with the C bomb.

Thing is, I really hate the term feminazi. Because even if there are groups of feminists out there who lash out and attack men on the basis of being men and angrily demand things be done to their standards and bully people into a double standard, it is NOT equivical to being a Nazi.
Nazi's killed millions of people all over the world, what these alleged 'feminazi's' are doing is being annoying. Not the same thing.

Anyway, the last thing I don't like is how Jim didn't really apologize for these things. After a few days of backlash he did finally respond but instead of demonstrating humility or dignity he instead returned right back to insulting people and tried to act like he was the victim.
Going as far as to try to pin the blame on the person who he insulted.

I don't like that he's on the Escapist. Much more than that I just don't like the fact that he's being considered or considering himself 'a game journalist'. Journalists shouldn't make joke articles to rile people up, journalists shouldn't troll and journalists should know better than to make such insensitive remarks.
I know I've given Movie Bob a lot of rants about his constant trolling of my beloved Halo and the fanbase associated with such but all the same I'll say this for the guy:
He would never stoop so low as to make rape jokes just to get people riled up.

Every negative thing people say about the maturity level of games, Jim's articles happily reinforce. Yes, we really are lonely horny guys who will literally buy us anything if it promises CGI boobs, yes we really do think less of women to the point of being misoginist pigs and yes we really are of an audience who will defend that kind of sense of humor by calling it 'sarcasm'.

I don't want people like Jim acting as the voice for games, not with that kind of track record and public face.

Anyway OT:

In case I hadn't made my views on Jim clear enough in the above post, I don't like him. His episodes aren't funny or informative. They've increased in production value and presentation a little bit but honestly in my opinion Yahtzee is ten times the comedian this guy will ever be and the people at Extra Credits are like a hundred times the game commentator he'll ever be.
And we already have both of them.

I've had my disagreements towards Extra Credits, Movie Bob, Shamus Young, Graham and Paul, Yahtzee, Lisa Foiles and every other internet celeb on the Escapist in the past, but Jim is just too much.
I won't protest or demand he leaves, clearly there are people on this site who like the Jimquisition and far be it from me to deprive them of that. I'm not going to mock people for liking him and I'm not going to say my opinion is gospel truth.
But at the end of the day, I can't say with a straight face that I like Jim's show and after having a look at what kind of a person he is on twitter, I have difficulty saying I have much respect for him as a person either.

If you like him, fine. I respect your right to like whatever, but I could live without the Jimquisition on the Escapist.

I like him, he resembles my way of thinking and voicing my opinion. But I do not swear as much.
But variable content is always good, this site doesn't need to have content that you always agree on. If you disagree with something doesn't mean it should be removed, let all flowers blossom. You do not need to watch hes videos, no one is forcing you.

Joking aside, the thing about humor is this. Either EVERYTHING goes or NOTHING does.
Can't have it both ways.

You may think that was a clever zinger but that actually DID offend me and make you lose points with me before the debate even started.

You may think that you are joking but understand that not everyone is going to laugh along with you when you indirectly insult them.

Joking aside, the thing about humor is this. Either EVERYTHING goes or NOTHING does.
Can't have it both ways.
I don't buy that.
Would that rule apply to making a joke about a young boy's father dying in a car crash after it had only happened a week ago?
Would it be okay to do it? Something tells me no.
So why then is domestic abuse okay? Why is rape an acceptable joke topic?

Domestic abuse and rape are both real things that are happening all over the world and it's no laughing matter to the people involved. Rape victims are often traumatized for life and some people have developed serious injuries as a result of Domestic Abuse.
Explain to me why it should be considered acceptable to even joke about either of these things being in any way positive?

Honestly I've seen way too many smutty, offensive and desensitized writings that consider themselves 'jokes' get away with it by carrying the argument 'it's just a joke'. And I don't like it. Honestly when I watch Drawn Together for instance, my attitude is less along the lines of 'wow what a clever and politically relevant satirical joke' and more along the lines of 'oh my god they just ridiculed victims of civil war and disease in Africa, how can the be so insensitive about something that for people in that country right now is a very real horror that they have to face every day'.

Yes you have a right to make jokes about whatever you want, that doesn't mean you should. You have a right to make jokes but with that comes the responsibility of knowing when to say when.

But plus there's something else. Anything can be made a joke if it is actually funny. If it's done in a tasteful and well thought out way, the offensive nature of the joke can be overlooked because we can enjoy the satirical aspect of it.
That's the other thing I don't like about Jim, not only are the jokes in poor taste. But they also aren't funny.
In the article he did where he made fun of feminism ('why fat princess is better than feminism') he wasn't even particularly funny. His writing brought more to mind that of a schoolyard bully then that of a well spoken comedian.

Anyway I guess I'll just finish this off with one question.

What can you think of that's funny about rape? Go on then, tell me. What about it could ever be considered light hearted or whimsical that'll have audiences in fits of hysterical laughter?
Go on, tell me the funny side about being violently pushed to your feet, having your clothes ripped off, fearful for your life while someone forces you to be a sexual partner even as you struggle and beg them to stop? The pain and the humiliation and the fear and the complete loss of any sense of self control.
And the sbusequent months of trauma that follow.

You find that for me and I'll agree that all subject matters are equal in terms of mockery.

Not a big fan myself. Ive watched his videos on this site, and He comes off as an arrogant prick. Ill agree to some previous statements on here, that he doesnt have Charisma or delivery. And as someone who acts, and knows how to deliver a joke or two, he needs this to help him catapult the very poor joke material hes feeding off of. I guess I just cant stomach his ego really. Like the whole, "thank god Im here". If he was funny, I might be like, "Yep, thanks god for delivering that laugh for me" But hes not.

That aside, he has gotten better and improved. Will he improve to the point where I will want to watch his show on a weekly basis? Probably not.

Honestly I think some people are over-reacting, I'm a bit indifferent to the Jimquisition, stay or go it won't affect me much, and I've seen 2 of his vids here, and that PSPGo one, which wasn't bad, I'd give it a 6/10 on the hilarity scale, so I'll check in with him to see which next group he pisses off, and if its funny, then I'll watch more, otherwise I'll keep on watching other stuff.

I don't know how much room he's given on the chain to move, but some of the stuff he used to address was important and cogent, but overlaps with subjects presented in the more educational style in Extra Creditz, and the 'let's sit around the campfire, children' style of MovieBob's videos.

The Escapist community seems to have its fill of ranting in British accents, but I think he has touched on some important subjects at ground level at times, has not been afraid to give harsh reviews where they were deserved and I think we just need to give him some time to get used to the blue decor of this site for him to continue some of his better videos.

Jim is a polarising figure, that's obvious and a part of his appeal. I think he's just as much a 'let them hate me so long as they fear me' journalist as Yahtzee and I respect him for it.

And I guess that makes me a game critic critic. Bugger me.

His Destructoid article on piracy is one of the best gaming articles I've ever read, and perfectly illustrates why I left that particular boat. He got a fan for life with that one, and to be honest, I didn't even know he was on The Escapist until I saw this thread.

Considering Jim is the poster boy of Destructoid, that is where he should stay really. Losing his spot on the Escapist isn't going to make him unable to afford his next meal.

But sorry, to me he doesn't fit in the profile of the Escapist, neither that of the contributor nor that of the audience. He can do his thing on Destructoid where he can tailor to the target audience much better.

He seems like a fanboy who nerd-rages into a camera about petty things; some of which no one even disagrees with.

Everytime I watch it reminds me of mid-90's games show in the uk. The "bad-boy Barry" persona the guy who tells it straight and never mind your Mum or Dad. He might as well have a ventriloquist's dummy it's so cliched.

Granted I am one of few people who think that but this guy is probably in his mid-twenties and I'm thinking "grow-up" Not in his life or anything it's just a really dated way of discussing games.

And between Yahtzee, Moviebob, Shamus Young and the Sometimes-Evangelical Extra Credits, I get my fill of heated debate with style, humor and the odd dick joke.

Heh... never seen this before... he's like the retarded lovechild of Yahtzee and Dr Ashens. Derivative, but still funny with it, and if he keeps making things in this style then there is some distinction between the three.

But, is he, like, Ozzie or an expat or something? He sounds deeply english to me, maybe a north londoner, but paid 300+some "dollars" for the system. Perhaps it's just an affectation to make his character seem more stupid, or as a sop to the international viewer?
