Hello again fellow escapists! I was thinking today about how often I don't wear shoes. I am a firm believer that walking barefoot toughens up your feet. Because of this I sometimes walk into town etc with no shoes on, and I have sort of earned a reputation around where I live as "That guy with no shoes". Basically I thought it would be fun to see if I could go the entire summer holidays without wearing any shoes. Do you have any thoughts? Do you think I could do it?

(I would obviously wear shoes for something important, like a funeral or something)

Well, as long as noone you know dies, then you should be able to.

why you'd want to though, I have no idea.

That is stupid.

Shoes exist for a reason. And one of those reasons is HYGIENE. Also, if you really want to toughen up your feet, use one of those scratching posts for kitties.

You can do it...but why?

If you lived in some sort of tropical country I would say yeah why not. But you live in the UK and that's sort of odd to want to go barefoot. Then again it's completely insane so I say go for it.

Just so you all know, I'm planning on doing this anyway, I'm just asking because I want to know how insane I am/Everyone else is.

To be honest why bother, shoes are comfortable and fashionable - why would you want tough feet anyway?

Is it that you want to prove a point?

Go for it for the lulz. My mum got stitches in her foot when an inch of glass went through though. Just saying...

Bah, I stepped on a rusty nail before, went straight in. But it hasn't put me off in the slightest. I just really want to do something memorable.

Go for it! I love it when people go against the popular trend and try something a little different :D

Inside and at home I do it all the time in the summer, so much easier. But outside the house, never, for obvious safety reasons. Too much crap (sometimes literal) and dangerous debris around.

I rather not step in a shard of glass or a sharp stone, or walk on a disgusting floor without any shoes. Sure rusty nails and the likes go straight through, but most of the stuff is blocked by your soles.

For example, I rather not step barefooted in a discarded french fry or a piece of gum. Ugh...

Ditto, I've had a rusty nail go through my foot and I was wearing shoes so honestly I dont think this matters much.

I say go ahead.

Hehe do a charity thing. Every 100 dollars raised adds a day to the time you go without wearing shoes. On topic I say go for it. I too enjoy it when people go against the grain no matter how minor it may be.

I hardly ever where shoes unless at school or out with friends so I'd say go for it. Be free.
Free sounds good :]

I suppose I could.... Also, I'm set to go to sixth form next year, technically I believe you don't have to wear shoes.... An Idea emerges! But seriously, no shoes during the British winter does not seem like a good idea, even to mental old me.

Enjoy your blisters, calluses and broken glass.

Interesting. I must say, go for it. I used to be a barefoot as a kid during summer. It's fun to be able to run at full speed in sharp gravel feeling just a mild tingling afterwards. You almost never get any cuts or splinters to your feet neither. And there is that freedom you get when not wearing any shoes. Just remember to keep a certain level of hygiene.

There's no need to be like that. I can handle blisters... Walking barefoot is generally quite fun, if you ask me. I think toughening up your feet could prove to be a good idea if you are ever stranded somewhere. Then you'd have to make do with Blisters and you be bloody glad you had calluses.

Yes, definitely. I would wash my feet every day (more than usual I mean) and I agree actually, if you walk barefoot often, then the soles of your feet are surprisingly tough, sharp gravel is fine, and as long as you are vigilant and careful where you step, then it makes little difference.

Exactly and good to hear. Good luck with it.
