So just out of curiosity . How many consoles have you owned at launch? Also , why do or don't you buy consoles on launch? I'll put some ground rules so we are all onthe same page .

1)Let's say the first 3 months of a consoles launch
2) Consoles include handhelds
3) Pc's don't count
4) You don't have to hae bought it youself . Say your Father bought it for the family , or you significant other bought it as a gift for you , that still counts as long as you own it .

I ask this because i'm curious to how many people actually buy these things at launch , both now and in the past .

Personally i have only owned . 4 consoles at launch . The Snes , The playstation , the gamecube and the Nintendo DS .

The only one i bought myself was the Nintendo DS . I have recently decided to not buy consoles on launch , because the games that come out don't reflect the potential of the console . And the games are kinda sub par .

0. At first it was because it takes me time to set aside the money required to get one. Now though I also don't get one at launch because I know it will have problems when it first comes out and I just want to avoid that. I've only ever owned a PS2 and Xbox 360, both bought 1-2 years after they were released.

None. I'm far to poor and always have been. I have to wait for the price to drop to afford it, or I just can't afford it at all.
As far as I know, no one's bought me a console at launch. My dad actually won our PS2 in a bet not long after it came out.
Even if I had the money, I'd wait until they smoothed out any mistakes.

PS2. Though my dad and stepmum got a gamecube and Wii pretty much for me and my brother at release.

Also DS but like you said it doesn't count so whatever.

I never buy at launch, in the past it's been the killer app that has made me buy one like when SEGA changed the pack in title for the Megadrive from Altered Beast to Sonic.

Nowadays money is tight so I never buy hardware on a whim, I'll wait until a price reduction / redesign and killer apps for example I plan to buy a WiiU around Xmas, or Jan if prices rise due to xmas demand.

Been a PC only gamer for donkey's years has bred into me the habit of rather than buying a new console to play a certain game I'll buy and spend my time with whatever I can get on the hardware I currently have. That's why instead of buying a PS3 to play Japanese games I've stuck with my 2-3 year old Slim 360 and it's back catalog. I only bought a DS and PSP 3 months ago because I wanted to play SRPGs and FPS Dungeon crawlers. I won't upgrade to a 3DS until I've had chance to clear much of my DS back catalog.

I probably would have held off buying a WiiU for longer if it wasn't for the fact I bought aload of Wii games expecting my PC would play them through Dolphin, and Dolphin doesn't run that great on my system anyway.

As for the PS4 / Xbox 180 I won't be even considering buying one for atleast 2 maybe 3 years, Too much of a backlog of current gen to get through.

IIRC I bought a PS2 within the 1st year but that was an exception due to my whole gaming collecting outside PC getting stolen. (which sucks considering I would have loved to retro game on them instead of use emulation)

Two.

The first was my Mega Drive, which I got from my parents for my birthday. Though to be honest,my birthday is April 2nd, so it was five months after release, so maybe it doesn't count.

Then I was a PC gamer for the duration of the 5th and 6th console generations and didn't buy any consoles or handhelds. Everything I own from those generations, I bought over the course of the 7th.

The second launch purchase was the PS3, which I bought somewhere near the end of may 2007, two months after release.

None. I believe I've had some within first 2 years of their lifecycles, GBA and PS2 I think, but not 3 months

One. The gameboy advance. And it was a gift. I just never had the money to buy a console at launch. Now I would have it, but there's no way I get either at launch because of early problems and such.

Fixed it . I forgot , that 0 was an option.

None. I haven't ever bought a new console at launch. Mainly because I was at school and poor for all the previous console releases. However now that I have plenty of da cash I will buy a PS4 at launch

I've had 3 (well...still have them...) on launch day:

PS1...I worked at a used toy / game store and totally abused EA's $10 for ANY Genesis / SNES game towards a PS1 :)

Dreamcast...Got it at Babbages, same deal with abusing trade ins :)

PS2...Preorderred at KB Toys and bought a gift card every few weeks

None. I own an NES, PS1, GBC, GBA and a PSP. At launch, there are only a few games and the console is too expensive anyway. I might get a PS3 after the PS4 comes out so that I can get it cheap along with games that I want to play.

As long as I'm recalling accurately, none. My parents never bought my brother or I consoles immediately because since games were still coming out on the old ones they didn't feel it was worth investing in at that moment (and they were waiting for the price to drop). And now that I'm older I can't afford them at launch, anyway. Maybe I'll get a PS4 close to launch, depending on where my life is at that particular moment.
