I loved inception. I thought it was a great film, and Christopher Nolan is one of my all time favorite directors.

Does it deserve number 3? Well... Probably not, but I think we might see that position change soon. It could deserve a spot on the top 100, but most of Nolan's movies could be put up there.

IMO, Prestige is still the best movie he's ever done, and probably the best movie from the past 10 years.

It deserves its place there since on imdb, every half-decent movie gets incredibly high scores immediately after its release, and it's much more than that. It certainly isn't one of the three best movies of all time, if that's what you're asking, no.

a proper villan ... saving the world ... Cobb's dead wife
But those are very strange reasons to say it doesn't deserve that spot, because I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a good movie where a big bad evil threating to take over the world is the main plot and personal drama comes short. Well, the Lord of the Rings maybe, but that's about it. Even judging by imdb's standards, look at the Top 250, hardly any of those movies match your criteria.
Im not saying that it needed a big bad evil threat i was more leaning towards how the suspense was weak and i didint feel like the characters would accomplish much after succeeding int there goal.

I thought Inception was a fantastic film. But #3 of all time? No. That's beside the fact that the IMBD top 250 is a terrible list ruled by fanboys and the film elite.

Out of curiosity, what do you think is the best of 2010?
The funny thing is... Inception is my #3 of 2010... #1 is the Book of Eli for not only being an incredibly awesome action film, but being extremely well directed (especially the gunfights), well acted, the fights were well choreographed... but for also being a great commentary on religion and the way it is used and has been used and it was cleverly disguised as a silly post-apocalyptic action movie. I'm seriously beyond perplexed by the negative reviews, but personally I think most of the people who rolled their eyes at it was because it was based around the Bible and they're the "cool dude" anti-religious groups who couldn't open their eyes long enough to understand what the film was trying to say (apologies if any of that offended you or anyone reading this... I get a bit heated when it comes to movies/religion).

And #2 is Toy Story 3 because... having grown up on Toy Story I might be a bit biased... but it was simply amazing. It was truly the definition of "family movie." It entertains the children watching with the toys and their over the top adventure that entertained me as a child while still being enjoyable for the older audiences as well. There were the silly jokes thrown in to make the younger kids giggle and some surprisingly hilarious parts that made even me genuinely laugh. It was funny, suspenseful, filled with action, and even had some parts that beat me to tears with the nostalgia stick.

Inception was great. It was an interesting and mindbending adventure that really made you think which is more than I can say for most atrocious summer movies. But number 3 of all time is quite a stretch.

in an industry where Slumdog Millionaire--a film with middling structure and grab-bag camera tricks--can take an award over the brilliantly paced and exceedingly well-written Dark Knight (another Nolan flick) is an industry where we can't look for a hierarchy of "deserving".

Seriously, only 1 Oscar for Dark Knight. Fuck all yous bitches.

I don't think it really deserves that high, but I honestly don't really mind. It's just a list. And Inception was an incredible movie anyways, so it's nice to have a good movie well received anyway.

Might wanna put the spoiler tag in the title... or the text of the post.

Personally, I think it deserves it (mnot #3 of all time, but the movie's new and that's how IMDB top 250 works, I believe Dark Knight held that spot before).

Well the villain is not too bad, if they emphasized it more, it'd have worked just fine as one, corporation becoming a superpower = bad. But if you're looking for a villain, at least a human one, you kinda missed the point.

The true point of the movie is, dun dun dun dun, Inception. The concept of planting an idea in someone's mind, it's pretty much mind control, no small thing.

As for the villain, it's not about the humans, it's about the dreamworld. The real threat is the danger of the job, getting stuck in limbo etc. And the ending indicating the 'reality' itself might just be someone's dream. This movie is not about exterminating some great evil or defeating some great villain, it's about exploring and depicting the dreamworld, seeing how it works and what it can be used for.

I found the job itself though interesting though, yeah it's a bit dramatic, but well pulled off, to the point where I actually felt compassion for the son of the guy. The acting's superb (put aside Titanic and you'll realise how awesome Leonardo diCaprio is), I loved literally every character and how they played into the role (a few cliches, but nothing wrong with that)

It was an excellent film. Debatable on position, new films always do end up way up there, and then they settle into more reasonable positions when the hype has died off.

Currently, Toy Story 3 is the 10th best film of all time. I think that is far more baffling, and an excellent example of what I'm saying.

It was a great film, but does it deserve number 3 all time? Likely not.

It's one of the best new film I have seen in a long time, it deserves to be on the list. But not as #3.

Every one of you who voted yes believes that Inception is better than Pulp Fiction or The Good, the Bad, and They Ugly?

That's the stupidest thing I've heard in a while. The movie isn't that good at all. I mean, it's ok, but not extraordinary.

I agree your point on Avatar, but i thought the Sci fi in Inception was bit off, they manage to explain how the dream gizmo worked but didint explain where it came from or why anyone would invent such a thing , except military and illegal.
I think you are also right about Imdb and the rating would even out eventually.
And that is one of the many defining reasons why I thought inception was amazing. Every single movie now has an explainer on everything. We, the audience, are treated like dribbling, drooling, morons whom can't understand how the simplest of things come to be. "Lets open this door, but how do you open a door? oh you turn the handle, see folks, the handle is right here, you put your hand on it, squeeze, then turn, and for those advanced users out there, we'll explain how to walk and talk at the same time!!".

No, inception was great because the director said "maybe they aren't retarded" and didn't give us an explanation on how everything worked. For once in the Hollywood world, i was treated like an adult with some semblance of higher brain function, rather than a child who can't spell "dog". Maybe other people need it, but I like the fact that nothing that didn't NEED to be explained, wasn't. The time leaps and how the dreams worked was needed or else you wouldn't be able to keep up, and we were given just enough to let us fill in the blanks ourselves, but no one stuffed a spoon full of mashed and gooey carrots in my mouth.

Was it THE smartest and most deep movie ever? No. But it was smarter and deeper than most of the other drudge that seems to find its way on the big screen.

Yes. Number 4 is The Godfather Part 2 (The Godfather is #2). Number 5 is The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. Godfather 1 and 2 don't both deserve to be in the 3 best movies of all time, and Inception is definitely better than a Spaghetti Western.

Villains aren't required for conflict. The most epic dramas are often internal. Movies don't always have to follow comic book logic.

If you're absolutely positive that his wife is dead, then you probably missed the point of the movie.

Edit: Also, the movie wasn't supposed to be about the tech. It was about the repercussions and effects of the use of it.

As for villains, The Matrix was good, too, but one of the main shortcomings of that movie was the fact that they felt the need to inject an individual antagonist rather than letting The Agents be an amorphous, indistinct, incredibly powerful threat. I like Hugo Weaving as much as the next guy, but making him The Agent (singular) made the movie less powerful, in my opinion.

I'd say this.

I love you Inception, but please get off the internet. There're only so many times I can talk about you.
