It's fun for about 5 mins ...maybe playing through a campaign mode would be cool for a bit, but otherwise it loses to point of the game for me.

Personally I like the idea of unlimited ammunition but still forcing you to think about reloading.

If I get infinite ammo, I want infinite ammo. Why do I still reload when I can't run out? It's not quite infinite then is it? It's infinite bullets with the constraint of clip size.
That's like the universe; it's infinite but you're constrained to it by the distance you can travel before you die.

I think it's a little silly to try and balance out infinite ammo by tying it into the "you still have to reload" thing. If you're going to provide something like that as an unlockable or as a cheat, why not just go all the way and give a bottomless mag? Anything else just seems nonsensical to me.

I'm good with either, whether it be the infinite supply of Serious Sam or L4D2 (Gib Fest mutation), or the bottomless magazines of SR2 and Conker's BFD.

In case I double post, I do apologize; but take Mass Effect 2 as an example.

In ME2 you have infinite bullets (like in the first game), BUT in this universe set 2-3 years after the first game technology has been remodelled and now guns can no longer cool down after having been fired for an extended period of time, even in snow cold tundras, or by waiting for a long time. To solve this the EA (and bioware) gave us Thermal clips. These act as heat sinks that never let go of heat. Suddenly you were no longer infinite in your bullet storm. If you ran out of thermal clips you could kiss you boomstick bye bye until you found a new one.

In ME1 by contrast you had infinite ammo, but only to the extent that you could fire before the gun overheated. Then you had to wait for a few seconds before resuming. The best solution was to not overheat at all and therefore not have to wait for the gun temperature to reach 0.

Both of these instances you had infinite ammo constrained to limiting factors (thermal clip size, or temperature of weapon)

Given how much fun I had with the chicago typewriter in Resident Evil 4 I would have to go with the "bottomless mag" option. However, I am a lot happier with a fully tricked out "Red-9" though.

Well me and my cousin just played a game of Halo Reach firefight where it was all grunts and we had bottomless rocket magazines with infinite jet-packs. It was freaking hilarious.

However in any other game I like having to reload just because otherwise it is horrendously overpowered.

Holding down the trigger to win is boring, having unlimited mags is only slightly better since there is a point at which you have to stop shooting.

I will say, bottomless magazine (ITS CALLED A MAGAZINE NOT A CLIP YOU NOOBS) can be a great deal of fun, especially with single shot weapons such as the Grenade launcher in CoD4. That was great fun, mowing down enemies with the grenade alone.
Clip is an accepted term for games and has been since the first reloading mechanic was implemented. It isn't the real world and not everyone is a gun nut/gives a shit.
well if you didn't give a shit you certainly jumped in on the side of calling them clips. That constitutes giving a shit. Just because it was used in early gaming doesn't mean it has to be true today, either. (can't think of an example. Too late at night after a long day of being sick for me)
I'm a gun nut and I give a shit about people thinking their surface knowledge of a subject somehow constitutes a reason to call others out for improper terminology.
Chill out guys.
This is not about the finer etiquette of weapon terminology.

Its about your preference in physics bending ammunition supply.
So put your differences aside and leave it. You are not proving anything apart from how childish you guys are.
What about a bottomless m14 then? Also, pointing out that difference is an english teacher going in here and highlighting every improper use of "Whom" and "I/me".

Bottomless works in DOOM style, infinite supply works.. somewhere.

Unless you mean magazines that when unloaded at 20 rounds just add 20 to your stock and you always load full mags? Because the whole having half full magazines doesn't work for games.

Personally I love to riddle the corpse of my opponent with bullets for five minutes straight, so I'm a fan of the "Bottomless Magazine" type of unlimited ammunition.
That's always fun, especially when the force of the bullets sends their ragdolls scraping across the ground. Great fun and the reason I prefer the bottomless magazine. To be honest though, infinite ammo is infinite ammo. Changing up clips and reloading shotguns doesn't take that much time.

My favourite method is with guns that heat up, but have unlimited ammo. It means you avoid reloading (i always reload even if its for 1 bullet with a long reload time), but cant just hold fire forever (boring).

I WOULD say bottomless mag after playing RE5 for so long, but in a different game, if you had to take cover (COD, Mass Effect) a bottomless mag would make the game too easy.

I have to say bottomless mag simply because I have had more situations where I need to reload just at the wrong momentthan I care to remember

Depends on the game. Some games need the restriction of clip size, but not total ammo, or vice versa.
