to start with, no flaming. this a thread which screams "FLAME WAR!!", and im just not interested in that.

so lets keep it simple; a probably slightly slow american priest in the deep south declared september 11th "International Burn a Koran Day" for a reason he changed as media attention grew and grew. chances are you heard about it, as it made the front page on nearly every news outlet of import, exploding a minor issue that noone would have ever cared about it into a international incident that subsequently caused deaths in afghanistan, and riots over the muslim world.

since then the event has been cancelled and the priest has recieved death threats and western politicians every where have condemned it. muslim priests have declared "such a action must not even be considered".

however, muslims frequently burn american flags, american effigies (it was almost ironic to see arabs burning effigies of Obama to protest the burning of a symbol of import) and all sorts of things, is it that much of a outrage for a christian to want to do the same?

now its a simple question, is it wrong to ostracise a christian for burning a important symbol of a religion who routinely burn important symbols of his?

even simpler: did this priest deserve such a backlash? he was doing what muslims have been doing to his flag for the past 20 years.

Maybe its more of a case of "being the bigger man". Stooping to their level tarnishes Americas reputation.

So basically you're saying that two wrongs make a right? Regardless of 'who started it' its still wrong and it's just increasing the idea that all Muslims are bad or terrorists. Instead of burning the Quran why doesn't he do something useful with his time, like I donno, preach about his religion?

This, to overcome an adversary whilst avoiding the very nature that makes one the adversary is the best possible action.

Also, I think if the medai would have just ignored it then it would not have become the issue it eventually did. And all those Muslims that didn't make a big deal about it are much smarter and possibly better informed on the events true nature and the nature of the people that supported it.

On one hand there's book burning, and on the other there's sensibility and reason.

Guess which won out in the end.
ok this confused me... are you making a "the nazis burnt books but the rest of the world stopped them through nice language and diplomacy" point? err, because that would be wrong.

The bible is the most burned book in history.
so someone is burning some koran's? big deal, its nothing compared to the holy matirial burned in history.

Burning books is always wrong. I just think it symbolises nastiness the same way exempting Video Games from First Amendment Protections is wrong...

But then again, those people are free to be total khunts. But I don't care if you're burning a Koran, the Kama Sutra, Twilight, 1984 or Mein Kampf...book burning rubs me up the wrong way.

If they want to burn bibles & American flags, and then riot every time someone draws a picture or names a bear Muhammad, they can 'suck it'.

This is not a theocracy, religion does not rule here...at least on paper.

While I can understand 'being the bigger man', when you're at war sometimes you have to be the
bigger bully.

Also, it's just a book.
Paper, maybe some leather, and ink.
Get-over-it.

For a second I thought this said "Burn a Korean Day," and I was going to say that I like International Hug an Asian Day better. But I'm not a fan of book-burning either. Mistreatment of books in any way really grinds my gears.

Couldn't of said it better myself. Two wrongs don't make a right.

Man, in the middle east, I'd love to be the guy that sells American Flags. He must earn SOOOO much money. He probably has branches everywhere!

Calumon: Is being extreme really the answer to extreme-me-mism?

I personally wouldn't do it, however, I would not prevent another person from doing it. Its not illegal.

I originally read this as "International Burn a Korean Day", I skimmed over the name like 10 times before realising it said "Koran". I don't really care if this guy burned a book, I don't look at them as anything more than fiction anyway. I can see why it causes a lot of commotion, but I honestly, truthfully, bluntly do not give a fuck.

An eye for an eye I suppose. Still you should never burn books it's really messed up, and is that really how Koran is spelled? I always thought it had a Q :/

Kind of off-topic... But building a freaking mosque on groundzero is a freaking horrible idea. and dont come here and tell me they didnt know it would make a scene...
Why not build a monument to Hitler in Auschwitz while we´re at it?

(I do realize that the mosque - hitler isnt the best comparison, since not all muslims are terrorists, but really...)

It's a little disrespectful towards Muslims or whoever but it's a lesson for them to be a little tolerant of other beliefs.

I'm tolerant of Christians and Muslims so in return it'd be nice to have the same in return.
