Burning things is a symbol, book burnings symbolize that you're an idiot who can't be bothered with logic, understanding, or ideas contrary to your own. They are burning what they see to be a symbol of oppression and 'evil', you want to win them try not insulting their culture and religion which is older than your country, by a lot...

I'd say he has a right to be able to burn as many Korans as he wants. Just as anyone else has as much right to burn as many bibles as they want. Or those nutcases (far too many around these days, I have a hard time keeping track of which is which) have as much right to burn D&D books, and picket comic conventions... freedom of expression there. Doesn't mean other people can't say what they're doing is just plain dumb though! D=

Not that I'd care, as far as I'm concerned, people who have these crazy ideas about Gods and whatnot can go and do whatever they want, as long as I don't have to get involved. In so much as, say, having to pay tax money for some old sod to come over here and call me a Nazi. I mean, unelected officals going to other countries and insult people, that's the job of our Royal Family! Damn undercutting Papal git!

I'm always against book burning, no matter what book.
Although, really... how different is it from Anti-American Muslims who burn American flags? Both are symbolic acts of hate.

With that said, I'm disappointed in that priest. Instead of showing America was the bigger man he made Americans and Christians looks just as ignorant as the flag burners.

I love how all these Christian Priests support these radical ideas, when in fact it goes against their very religion.

Lets all see who will win the stupid contest.

So you're saying that a few Muslims burn the Bible/American Flag, so it's a great idea to burn their Holy Book in return? Why insult all of them just to get back at a few and spark another incident that no one needs? That would be like burning the Japanese Flag every December 7th... The sooner we just grow up, the sooner the people burning our flags will.

My question in response to this is, if some Mosque declared a burn-a-bible day, would the backlash be the same? My money's on no. Just putting that out there.

Anyway, if that pastor wanted to burn Korans, I don't see any reason why he shouldn't have been able to. Note that I didn't say he was right in doing so, though. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

a probably slightly slow american priest in the deep south
I take offense, I live there, it's close to (but not actually in) the deep South. As for the asshole priest, yeah I hate him, he and his minions are always bugging people by spreading their "heaven sent" message of genocide. Bah. Glad he skipped town.

Maybe its more of a case of "being the bigger man". Stooping to their level tarnishes Americas reputation.
Couldn't of said it better myself. Two wrongs don't make a right.
"Two wrongs don't make a right" is NOT the correct phrase. That insinuates that Muslims are doing something wrong. Terrorists are a tiny fraction of the more than a billion Muslims in the world.

Muslims = Good.
Pissing off a major religion by burning their holy books = BAD. Very fucking bad.

Not as many people as I'd hope are offended by this, but if a bunch of Muslims start burning Bibles everyone will think they're the bad guys.

Burning books isn't the way civilized people make a statement.

Also, if the 1.3+ Billion muslims in the world were all violent we would be in deep, deep shit.

I read this as burn a korean day first...

And who cares? It is a book. Burning it does not destroy their copy of the koran. This does not really matter.

On one hand there's book burning, and on the other there's sensibility and reason.

Guess which won out in the end.
ok this confused me... are you making a "the nazis burnt books but the rest of the world stopped them through nice language and diplomacy" point? err, because that would be wrong.
Now you're confusing me. I never invoked Godwin's law. I'm saying that this guy could have either been the better man, or go on a book burning. The nazi's weren't the only book burners. Lots of other respectable societies went on them, those guys from Assassin's Creed, for example.

Same reason you burn the American flag...in protest.
What are you protesting against with such action tho? If you think it's a political statement against extremists among the middle-eastern nations you are as wrong as you can possibly be. Koran is not a national symbol, it's doesn't represent any single country nor nationality, it doesn't represent politics at all. You would be protesting against a whole religion, and everything it's believers, even among your own countryman, stand for.

Apart being a religious text and holy word of the same god as Tora's or Bible's it is also, similarly to every other of such books, a cultural good.
Maybe if at least half of ignorants would take their time to actually read it, they would stop getting such stupid ideas. But obviously im demanding too much, majority of Christians didn't even bothered to read their own holy bible so why should they bother with it's, obviously evil, counterpart.

so lets keep it simple; a probably slightly slow american priest in the deep south declared september 11th "International Burn a Koran Day" for a reason he changed as media attention grew and grew. chances are you heard about it, as it made the front page on nearly every news outlet of import, exploding a minor issue that noone would have ever cared about it into a international incident that subsequently caused deaths in afghanistan, and riots over the muslim world.

since then the event has been cancelled and the priest has recieved death threats and western politicians every where have condemned it. muslim priests have declared "such a action must not even be considered".

however, muslims frequently burn american flags, american effigies (it was almost ironic to see arabs burning effigies of Obama to protest the burning of a symbol of import) and all sorts of things, is it that much of a outrage for a christian to want to do the same?

now its a simple question, is it wrong to ostracise a christian for burning a important symbol of a religion who routinely burn important symbols of his?

even simpler: did this priest deserve such a backlash? he was doing what muslims have been doing to his flag for the past 20 years.
Yeah he deserved the backlash, why? because the moron did exactly what you did in your post. Lump every Muslim in the same box, the box that reads that they're all anti-western anti-american, flag burners.

Kind of off-topic... But building a freaking mosque on groundzero is a freaking horrible idea. and dont come here and tell me they didnt know it would make a scene...
Why not build a monument to Hitler in Auschwitz while we´re at it?

(I do realize that the mosque - hitler isnt the best comparison, since not all muslims are terrorists, but really...)
I won't come here and tell you they didn't know it would make a scene. I'll tell you that it isn't a mosque it is in fact a community centre that happens to have a prayer room in.

And yeah you're comparison was stupid because you're talking out of your ass.

A flag and a holy relic is hardly a fair comparison.
Depending on how you choose to interpret what a religion is, a flag may very well be a holy relic.

I think its because we'd like to hold ourselves to a higher standard, and you know, turn the other cheek. Something this pastor clearly forgot about in all his hypocritical anger.

But when I heard this was some bigoted pastor in Who The Fuck Cares, FL- at a church of 40-50 people, I immediately stopped caring. They're just a bunch of assholes who have warped views that have no place in our culture. If anything, it was a whiny cry out for some attention. But the story here, and what made me interested, is that we gave this pissant INTERNATIONAL attention. A man that will obviously not be swayed by any arguments or anything to change his backward thinking- tell him to fuck off- don't give him the microphone. Especially now that he's flat out lying that he convinced the Imam in L.Manhattan to move the Community Center, something that wasn't even connected to this in the first place! Now we've enabled this fucker to think that he somehow speaks for his religion, and that his childish tantrums will yield him the attention that he so desperately is crying for.

Another example of a twisted individual who is willing and completely ok with perverting his own religious beliefs for some other agenda, and seeking to validate his beliefs through getting his message out on a large scale. Sounds a lot like these Islamic Extremists he condemns
