IT's not just "is a gun a good thing to have?" because for a lot of people, no it's not. But at the same time, there are competent people out there where having a handgun or tazer could be an effective self defence method.

Judging by your last sentence

I think you should stay far away from guns (but I get to keep mine).

I have to agree with Rebel...

If you are single or something, a gun is fine.
But if you have kids or grand-kids or something, I would say no...
Bullshit

Unless you're going to have your two year old fire your gun for you who does it hurt?

Bring a knife to a fist fight
Bring a gun to a knife fight
Bring a bigger gun to a gun fight

Just a question, but why do all these fights happen in the first place?

Now Khell I pretty much agree with everything you just said but there is one point I'd like to mention and that?s how the guns are kept in the house. I'm all for making sure some kid doesn?t put a hole in himself with one of my guns but gun locks can be hazardous. If someone breaks into my home I don't want to have to fumble around for a key so I can retrieve the weapon then open another container so I can load it. It's a good idea on paper but in practice it seems to put me at the disadvantage.

I'm personally for gun rights. Everyone should be able to get one because if someone really wants one, they'll find one. However, there should be regulations on who can own one, and mandatory tests to keep legal ownership every year or so. Extensive records should be kept on who has one, with helpful reminders to re-register on time.

As for me, I'll probably never own a gun. I have a nice 4.5 foot long by inch thick solid steel rod that feel off my desk at home. If I hear someone break into my house, they better notice me before I'm close enough because I'll start with the ribs or nose. Guns aren't good when you're writhing in pain on the ground.

keep it unloaded on top of somthing high (with safty on) eg. wardrobe
keep a full magazine in somthing low eg. bedside table

if you have kids you may aswell just stick to the old spade... trusty spade

Because we don't live in the republic of Happyland
True, but why is it that we can't allow ourselves peace of mind, knowing 'nobody will rob/harm me'.

True peace of mind is knowing nothing bad will happen. Not 'If such and such were to arise, I have such and such to deal with it'.

Why do we deny ourselves this?

Depends...

Are you a midget amputee who could use a .45 as a spare leg ala Grindhouse?

In the summer months, do you find the need for additional air venting near the ceiling?

Scare away all the preteens selling you candy, wrapping papper, and magazines for a school you never heard of?

Sure...why not?

Because peaceful people aren't as easy to motivate to do stupid things that benefit people in power.
If you got that from 1984, yes(the party needed war and suffering so the people would be glad to help and burn anyone that big brother told them to). If you pulled it out of nowhere, yes.

Khell you make some pretty good points and I agree with you for the most part. It always is a good idea to keep firearms away from the young ones until their old enough to fully comprehend what exactly they can do. I can never stress it enough to people who own guns that they need to teach their family members how to be safe around firearms. The shotgun and eventually the handgun are the only two weapons that will not be locked. The shotgun will remain under the bed and the handgun will either go under the pillow or the nightstand.

Don't have kids but I see your point. For now they stay where they are until I can find a better spot for them.
