Hello fellow escapists. I was a fairly avid and regular MMO player before a year ago when my laptop got stolen  Now Im soon to return to PC gaming, and im wondering abut the current MMO world. The two games I invested heavily in and very much enjoyed where Star Trek Online and DC universe Onlines, both have large communities, fun gameplay, and things that grab my interest. But im curious if their are any other MMOrpgs that might grab my interest.

Im particularly interested in Fantasy MMO's like the new Final Fantasy, or even The Old Republic, don't even say try to convince me to play WoW, played it, was boring to me. So does anyone have any news or advice which can aid me in my quest?

It's kind of oldschool, not that great mechanically and a big part of it is like giant spreadsheet... But it's like an ultimate sandbox in MMO space. Relies on users playing politics, messing with stuff and doing shit. Nice to read about but depends on taste if you want to participate.

Thanks for that, based on that I don't think I'll be playing Eve online. I thought it was a big Space combat MMO but it it seems not as combat driven as I'd had hoped.

Yeah just watched a gameplay video on youtube....boring as hell, yeah not for me I'll take STO for my space combat.

FF14 is actually quite fun, it has awesome endgame with the final set of 6 level 50 dungeons that you need to be fully geared for. The problem with the game is not really getting to 50, its being 50 but under-geared for "the chapters of bahamut" (the last set of dungeons). at the end all you got for getting gear is either grinding 3 level 50 dungeons or 3 "primal fights" which are basically long ass boss fights with elemental known as "primals". they get repetitive FAST and its really all you got to do until you get all your shiny gear so bahamut doesn't 1 shot your face.

But yeah everything else is great! Classes are fun: the scholar is my favorite class some sort of high skill cap healer which takes some time to get used to its shielding mechanics and the micromanagement of your pet fairy which supplements your healing. The scholar is part of the archaist class which can be both a DPS (summoner) and a healer (scholar) and all you need to do to change between them is wear a specific trinket. Other archetypes are there like the shield and board paladin or the lolChaosmeteor black mage. you can have all classes maxed out in one character and its always fun to be the guy who can just be anything that is needed for the next encounter.

Bosses and dungeons are great with numerous mechanics. one boss in FF would have 3 or 4 mechanics that would other wise be split between 2 bosses in world of Warcraft(though wow has like 100 dungeons or so so cut them sum slack). with some bosses having upwards of 6 or 7 like Titan and Garuda. Me? i still wipe in ifrit because I'm on stunning duty but i seem to always miss the stun on the eruption that was meant to kill the entire party.

TL:DR; Get it, registrations are opened again and the game is really fun.

I do enjoy SW:TOR a great deal, but I'm having trouble recommending it to someone else, since it does have its faults which are probably more numerous that I'd like to admit. I can only recommend to have a look at the f2p version and keep in mind that everything becomes vastly more comfortable once you subscribe.

What makes SW:TOR stand out are the character class storylines and the full (well, more or less full) voiceacting. It's like a bastard child of a Bioware RPG and any WoW clone out there.

The space missions are a joke, though.

The Secret World might be worth a look at.

It's got some rather interesting things with investigation missions and puzzles instead of just the usual kill X of Y ( although there's that too ). The atmosphere I find extremely good. The passive wheel is also interesting, you can pick two weapons, 7 active skills from any of those available for those two weapons and 7 passive skills from any weapon at all. It seems to allow for some decent build diversity.

Animations are somewhat lacking though and whilst I'm still early in the game combat itself is okay but not great at this point.

Still I'm enjoying my time and it's a good alternate take on a MMO instead of just copying other games. Don't think anyone can accuse this one of being a clone. First MMO where I've really had to think during normal missions.

FFXIV:ARR wasn't my cup of tea at all. Got to level 40 before the grind got the better of me. If you don't have a problem with that then I say go for it. Other than that(and somewhat lacking combat) it's a solid MMO.
Voted other, however, since I think you should give LOTRO an attempt.

I played it for three years before getting bored, which is a record for me. Huge amount of content, amazing atmosphere and the most mature community you can find in MMOs these days.
It's F2P and grinding points to unlock areas and expansions aren't hard to make. You get a shitload just by playing and can easily make a new char, blast through a starting area and have over 100 points extra within an hour. Since it went F2P I haven't paid anything except for when buying expansions. I chose to pay for them though, to get pre-order rewards. Could easily have bought them with points.

On the flip side it's starting to get a bit dated. I really don't mind that at all since I prefer the older types of combat(standing still, dealing blows until the enemy is dead), but I know it doesn't appeal to everyone. It also has the common MMO syndrom of getting worse with each expansion. Mines of Moria(the first) was really awesome and had a shitload of content. After that it just went to hell. Still plenty to do and a fun time doing it, but they've been really lazy on the instance/raids which was the most fun in the game.
Still, as it is free you might as well give it a shot and see for yourself.

Heck I didn't even know TSW was out yet. I will have to try it. Is it FTP?

I could second Eve though it's been years since I played. For all the strenghts of that game it has some problems baked right into it's DNA not the least of which is the process used to make money (any of the processes) are tedious as all hell and yet they are utterly necessary if you want to partake in PvP that I found exciting. There are ways to streamline that process of making cash of course but depending upon the sort of ships you're likely to fly against other players it simply can't possibly be fast enough. As a result, I was always hesitant to fly a Heavy Assault Ship or my Recon ship save for situations where I was highly confident I could bring it back alive. My carrier remained a hanger queen for any battle where we only had a handful of capital ships. My dreadnought sat in a hanger for months unused even though it could have proven decisive in several fights.

It's buy to play, no subscription though.

I'd say it's definitely worth the money if you're an MMO-enthusiast though. As I said, it's combat is fairly mediocre in my experience thus far and animations I'd consider downright bad. But the investigation missions and the atmosphere really are something else, there's some great puzzles to be found and occasionally you'll have to really investigate something.

One of the coolest things I've found is that they've set up several websites representing in-game locations and organisations where you'll have to find clues to solve some mysteries. Like http://www.kingsmouth.com, a tourist website for the first real area you'll visit in the game and http://orochi-group.com/ for one of the game's organisations.

Not sure if it counts, but there's this game called Elsword.
If you can get pas the fact that it's drenched in anime, and I mean DRENCHED , it's a great side-scrolling beat'em up MMORPG.

I briefly tried DCU Online, and very briefly tried World of Warcraft, and found them both to be tedious.

Guild Wars 2 gets my vote. It still has my attention, and will for some time; fantastic world design, though slightly lacking in compelling characters (Tybalt notwithstanding).

As for gameplay... the "trinity" is not missed, that's for sure.

The Old Republic- I've played everything else on the list and still nothing beats the story and voiced quests in it! Immeasurable fun if played with a friend, because of the ingenious joint conversation mechanic!

As an MMO enthusiast I'm sure you're aware the best time to play and enjoy an MMO is in the first six months of its existence, unless you have a rare long distance runner like WoW or EVE on your hands, and both those are in their dotage now. There are some middling options out there in the form of AAA games gone FTP, and more casual titles like GW2, but if you want a more vibrant experience you really do need to wait for a new game. I'd look into Everquest Next, Wildstar, and Elder Scrolls Online...in that order...to see which appeals the most to you, and then make a concentrated effort to get into the betas.

Not yet, but the FTP model is starting to flag badly, and the game is almost flat on its back thanks to terrible initial sales that spiraled into heavy layoffs and a scuttling of their intended schedule for content roll out. It's a niche title now, and Funcom is barely holding their heads above water.

If not for Defiance, The Secret World would've set the bar for catastrophic MMO launches. They sold less than 20% of their projected boxes out of the gate.

I'll second LOTRO even though it is getting old. It has good story telling, decent combat, decent multiplayer content, a huge world ranging from glorious to outright ugly at places. A bit of an uneven ride, but usually good fun for newcomers.

They call it F2P but in practice it's more like a free demo, with a relatively generous subscription plan and an annoying cash store. You can play about 30 levels for free, then you would have to pay or it gets extremely grindy. If you keep a subscription running for a while, you earn enough credits to permanently pay for most of the game, and you can play mostly for free after that.

But initially you wont have to pay anything making it a good candidate for trying out.

Don't judge EvE Online on screenshots and gameplay videos. They say practically nothing about the gameplay. It looks boring and ugly, and if you are into beautiful landscapes you won't like it. But the combat has a lot of depth underneath the surface, and it is a very deep world in terms of economy and player behaviour.
It has a steep learning curve and it takes some imagination to turn the dots and brackets into real spaceships and conflict. But people who get involved don't let go of the game easily.
EvE has a free demo, but it's somewhat limited to prevent people making money from free alt accounts.

I've been playing FFXIV lately, but it's not really holding my interest. I think I'm probably going to quit once my free month runs out.

I have gone on-and-off with both SWTOR and WoW. I think I'm probably going to go back to playing SWTOR soon. I've been craving that role-playing experience while questing. But I know I'll get tired of it after a little while and quit again.
