lolwut? no! lol, how else will people know I'm laughing at them?
"Hahaha" maybe? Or you could just tell them.
but whats the point, lol is easier. It's like suddenly saying you're annoyed with apostrophes so everything has to be written out in full.
Sure it's easier, but what if we started to do that wth evry sngl wrd? It wd gt qit anyng nd hrd t undsnd, nw wdn't t?
yes, but if it's something simple then I don't see how it really detracts in any way. I mean it's not like there's really any way you can misunderstand "lol" is there.
It's a single word being used out loud by netleet bastiches, but who comes up with doing it with every word? And chopping the english language? lols on THAT one. how many languages do you know have 5 words for the same damn thing? i mean, dude, we have letters that are included in the spelling of the word that don't farkin exist! Have you ever heard the g in thought? yeah, that's intelligent right there...

Well there was this new guy in school that said LOL when someone was making a joke, sadly the day after he got beaten up by a bunch of guys.

But in the interweb I dont mind using it as long as you dont atach it to every single sentence.

If you've never heard the phrase before it'd be hard, if not impossible to understand, but no, if you've heard it before it would be difficult to misunderstand it.
As to why I think you should write full words instead of shorting them down, this post sums it up pretty nicely.

In general, I've found that the rise in popularity of the internet is indirectly proportional to the ability of the users of the internet to spell correctly.

Thanks to the rise in text usage, people found it easier to speak in "txt spk", and thought it was perfectly alright to use that on the internet as well, where, I might add, contrary to a phone, where you might have a limited time with which to use create and send a message, in general, the internet does not have that limitation.

Second, people on the internet are selfish. They assume everyone can understand "txt spk", or whatever abbreviations they happen to come up with. Its not hard to do - here's an example:

LOLBNR

Anyone know what that means? It means Laughing Out Loud, But Not Really. Why don't you know it? Because I just made it up, right here, right now. And yet, if I was one of the users of "txt spk" I probably would have expected you to know.

In reality, there's no way proper punctuation, grammar and spelling can be enforced on the internet though, which is a shame, although that's just my opinion, which is partially because I'm an English student, and, sooner or later, going to become an English teacher.

Finally, let me say this - the above doesn't apply everywhere. For example, these Forums tend to have a high standard of English, with the odd exception.

Rant Over. Grumble Grumble.

Laugh Out Loud at this thread.

I think lol is acceptable when not overfuckingused, which, never happens.

Yeah, I agree with you in general about the quality of writing. It's just lol is so common it's passed into common dialect. I think spelling and grammar should only really matter if it becomes difficult to understand them.

Hearing somebody SAY lol however is just a bit far. I mean I've done it, sure, but I've also immediately been disgusted with myself afterwards.

I find that when lol is overused it becomes annoying as shit. And some times the uses are just stupid
"i don't get it lol", or ,"please respond lol".
it isnt that funny that you dont get it or you want a response people will respect you more if you stop using it in stupid pllaces like that.
Only when it's used stupidly. So basicly when it's used 100 times in the same comment.

I lol at this thread.
I fail to see how a single non-offensive word can manage to piss people off, but then again, i don't get grammar nazis either.

I even say lol IRL, bet you'll loose sleep over that.

i agree entirely. the odd, appropriate use is fine, like when you text someone a joke and they reply 'lol', that's fine but 'you coming out tonight? should be good, lol' or 'long time no see, lol' (both of which i have received) are just stupid
Seconded

i dont use it as i dont really like the look or sound of it, but seeing it written down has stopped bothering me since i started imagining people who use it fall asleep at their computers.

i suppose it looks less tedious then saying hahaha though.

Yes *growls I'll tolerate it if someone says it in response to something that is actually funny, but when they use it out of context; "Just gotta get a jumper lol" or "Just watching tv lol" like a frikking full stop, it really makes me want to eviscerate people, GAHHH NERD RAGE *FUME*
