lol is just internet slang on the net, which I view as a country with a VERY varied population. I live in Southern California, and we say "legit" a lot, but up North, they say "hella" which really gets on my nerves, 'cause it doesn't make any sense at all. Also, British people say "bloody" a lot, while the Canadians say "eh" quite a bit. Its just another thing that develops, and becomes part of the language. (the internet language)

Saying lol out loud is rather pointless, because if you're not laughing at the time you're clearly not "laughing out loud" at all, so why claim you are? And if you ARE laughing out loud, saying lol is kind of a pleonasm, stating the obvious that is. And using it in writing is pointless too, because we already have an expression for laughter: Hahaha. Instead of telling someone you're laughing, you can write the sound of actual laughter to get your point across quicker. Too often people use lol when they wouldn't actually laugh out loud, too.

It can get annoying sometimes when people use it just to make a sentence. For example my friend in IM convos uses LMAO all the time, even when I'm in the room and can cleary see he is not laughing, let alone laughing his ass off!
