Gamers are generally nerds. Nerds mostly like anime, tabletop games, conventions, etc. That's basically it.
In my entire lifetime, I have seen absolutely no correlation between gaming and anime, tabletop games and conventions.

Truthfully I'm only hanging around games until I can get a career as an amusement park reviewer, then i'll be able to go to amusement parks every day and thus will my life be forever set in happiness.
I wish I had that kinda life
Me too. The thing posted above is a fantasy, albeit one I hope to have come true. I mean all you gotta have is good descriptive skills so you can describe the feelings you get at the amusement parks and why you get them. I just love amusement parks, but sadly can only go to my local one once or twice per year, twice being if i'm lucky. I hope to correct that one day.

If you want to define Gamer as someone who plays games, I'd assume so. There are a few shows on here which arent to do with games, so they may only come here for that: LRR, for example.

I'm a gamer, but I have a few other hobbies. Not to mention I work 60 hour weeks, so I hardly have the option to be a computer recluse.

I used to be. But these days I only play games for a couple of hours a week, and even then they're usually only casual DS games or free Internet games so maybe I'm not any more.

I don't buy the latest releases. In fact I only buy about two games a year these days. But when I get a game I like, (a rarity these days - (roll on The Last Guardian)), then I'll play it most every day until I finish it. Back in 'the day' I used to own every system that was out, collector's editions, and even a few arcade machines, so I definitely was a gamer. What have I become? Is there a word for ex-gamers or in my case, retired gamers? Wait... yes there is - old.

I'm the opposite. I'm a gamer, don't consider myself a nerd, and I find gaming "culture" pretty annoying and pathetic. I just enjoy playing games and using my PC, along with several other unrelated hobbies.

I am not but when I joined the Escapist I was actually on a long break from gaming (Between PS2 and PS3), mainly because I wanted to get my A-levels over with before I got one.

Well first of I want to start by asking someone to define "gamer" but I think I don't play enough games to be a gamer but I do play and I enjoy it when I'm doing it!

just out of pure interest what part of gamer "culture" do you find annoying and/or pathetic? (not attacking you just geniunly curious)

like part of gaming culture I personly find annoying and or pathetic is people losing their shit over games that havnt even come out yet, and/or complaining because x game doesnt meet their exact expections, or imply that they are somhow entitled to x game and if its not what they want act liek the developer killed their dog

Im also wearing a T-shit that says I <3 yoshi on it, I like the figurines you get from collectors editions (got the guy from splintercell on my desk) and have a WOW mousepad, not because I play WOW but because it looked pretty and I freaquent this site alot, and socially....I havnt really got it together in that area

would you called that sad/pathetic?...I hope not because who the hell wants a plain old mouse pad?

I say it's more like nerds are generally gamers.

I know a lot of 'gamers' that have little or no interested in things you just listed.

Well, I never really found the term "gamer" useful, as many people can and play games. What I do call myself is a game enthusiast, ranging from videogames to boardgames, tabletop (still waiting for a chance to play Warhammer40K though), cardgames and even sports (which I sadly don't play nearly enough).

So yeah, I like games in all their forms, videogames included. They're a very fascinating medium to boot with fantastic possibilities and a completely unknown future. I remember a cracked.com article that labeled that unknown future as omnious, it just makes me excited really. I might even try to get work in the gaming industry to be a part of that future, steer it.

Well as of late I've begun to wonder if being a gamer is really a condition to be desired, but yes I still consider myself one.
In moderation; of course, why not?

What exactly is gaming culture anyway? LAN-parties? Conventions? Cake-jokes?

I don't go to conventions or like tabletop games either. Still I'm sure there are plenty of people here that enjoy them.
