There are moments of very intense atmosphere, but neither of them are ever actually scary. Any fear that may exist is completely obliterated the first time you die and realize that you didn't lose a thing but the 10 seconds to run back to where you were.

Bioshock was scary to me the first time I played it at the age of 12, to the point where I turned it off and didn't play for like 2 years(though this was more to me forgetting about it). Then I played it again in 2009/2010(not sure which), and wasn't really that scary. How I got over it was: When the enemies showed up or I thought they were going to, I just stood still and waited for them to attack me then I blew their brains out.

well, I gotta say, they are not "scary". but there are some "OH FUCK" moments

like this time in BioShock 1 that I was in Arcadia gardens lab fighting the splicers horde (yeah I didnt knew how to seal the door), somehow, my brain decided to use the machinegun, so I started shooting the hell out of everyone in the room, turns out there was a big daddy hanging around behind them, hearing those stomping metallic boots running and seeing a red eyed metal 3mts cyclops charging at me seriously scared me shitless

Ok I gotta say no, it's not scary--The first few enemies scare you but then once you learn you can use fire to burn them, crossbows to splinter them, and other goodies, it stops being scary. One time my dad came in to see what I was playing (you know how parents are with their old person stuff), and I was in one of the doctor's offices--It fills with steam after I wipe out all the enemies, I turn around, and bam!

There was a Splicer there. I got startled out of my mind and my dad did too. I thought it was funny. In conclusion: Don't worry, it's scary at first, but then the environments get nicer and your weapons get better, and everyone knows that no game is any scary other than jump-out scares if you have a machine gun ;P.

I could see how they could be, but after playing FEAR, no. Penumbra is really the only game that has been scary since FEAR for me...

It's much more creepy and atmospheric. But there is a couple of moments that get pretty scary.

2nd one isn't even creepy either too be honest. It felt like a retread.

The first one is a bit unnerving for about the first hour. Then once you've killed the first 3 Big Daddies you become mostly unstoppable and any tension is lost. The only other moment that gets you is your first encounter with a bunch of living statue splicers that come out of nowhere and don't make a sound that suddenly appear in a big empty room when you turn your back for a second.

The first was very creepy and atmospheric, and sure there was a few moments that made me jump. I don't think it was truly scary though.

Bioshock 2 wasn't really scary at all. But your a Big Daddy, why would anything phase you?!

I wouldn't say BioShock was scary. But it was sometimes very disturbing.
Such as when you come across the audio log of Dr. Suchong forcing a young Jack to kill his puppy.

That one made me cringe.

Anyone else here play with the Vita-Chambers turned off?

BioShock 1 had quite a few creepy, proper scary moments, a lot of disturbing stuff (Cohen's poem anyone? Hell that whole level) and a couple of startle-scares. Not enough to call it a horror game though, if you ask me.

BioShock 2 however had, again, quite a bit of disturbing stuff (it's still Rapture afterall) but I never really found it scary or creepy.

The first Bioshock really only had one scary moment. In the morgue. You know the one I'm talking about.
Oh gods that moment...

Fixed that for you, but fix it in your own post. Do use spoiler tags, the OP never played the game and you as well as I know how much this game relies on it's plot.

Bioshock 2 isnt at all, and the only scene in Bioshock that freaked me out was the dentist scene.
Oh forgot about that part, yeah that was intense.

Like people have said, it's not scary... not like a good horror game. However, there are some moments that are rather... exciting/stressful like first time running into a Big Daddy or whatever. BioShock 2 was much less intense although I found it more fun. Nothing like Drill Charging and impaling enemies as a Big Daddy :D

Fair enough. I should say, though, that if something is more than 2 years old, I feel spoilers are not required because everyone should have seen it by then. However, I will make an exception, as I didn't actually read the OP (just looked at the title and thought "OOOOH! SWEET!")

The first BioShock has its moments of being genuinely creepy at the start when you are pretty much unarmed, but after your first Plasmid that helpless feeling is gone and the world seems far less intimidating.

Nothing was scary about BioShock 2... your a fucking Big Daddy, what the hell do you have to be afraid of?

Compared to F.E.A.R, Silent Hill and S.T.A.L.K.E.R, BioShock is perhaps a 2 out of 10 on the fright scale.

I am quite jumpy regardless of the situation. I mean the first time I played Fallout 3 I spaz'd out because I set off a frag mine. That being said I would say that there are a few parts I found genuinely "scary" in Bioshock (and even then only the first time it happened) and the rest was just atmosphere and the fact that I am mega-twitchy sometimes (think Tweak on South Park).

Bioshock 1: scary at the start if you are not used to the atmosphere, or magically appearing dentists. After the Medical Pavilion, however, there is really nothing that is scary.

Bioshock 2: didn't scare me in the slightest in terms of the game. However my mum did scare the crap outta me while I was playing it with my headphones on by walking up behind me and grabbing my shoulder. It was during Pauper's Drop where that really intense Horror style music was playing to build tension. She didn't know what she was doing but when I played it for her on the speakers she felt so bad.

I'm normally frightened to death by horror films, but played through Bioshock and no, I didn't find it frightnening at all. In fact, it was only when my friend told me how he crapped his pants playing it that I even thought about it being scary. Depends on the person, I guess.

Bioshock 2, I haven't played, but from what I've seen and heard, I'd say no, it doesn't look even remotely scary.

The first 5-10 minutes or Bio 1 are legitimately unnerving, but once you have your first combat sequence you realize that there is nothing to be worried about at all.

Its like strolling through a mall populated by ugly people. I just couldnt get in the mood if I tried, the enemies were just people who could take more than one bullet, there's just nothing scary about them.
As for atmosphere it was just a normal urban setting just submerged in water, there were enough crazy ugly people spouting whimsical bible quotes to take all the feeling of isolation out of it. Not to mention you're an unstopabble, bee shooting magic man with infinite respawns.
