Well, after reading the thread about Sony and Microsoft not putting out a new console until 2014 it really has led me to wonder if people are going to be willing to wait these large periods of time for new consoles. Ofcourse for the first five years after they come out people will love them but for those that are more tech savvy so to speak (and there seems to be a growing number of these) is nine years going to be too large a number? Also i can't imagine that console companies will decrease the number of years to new releases due to the costing of making a new one and the prices they would have to put them to, to make the profits that they are today. I've always been a PC gamer predominantly and from what i've read the escapist seems to be pre-dominantly console gamers so is this too long a wait for you guys and would you consider a move to PC gaming?

I can't see how it could be seen as "dying" just because console releases are few and far between. I don't WANT to have to but new consoles every year or two; the larger the gaps between console releases means more game releases for the console I already own. If Playstation released a new system every other year, and after every release the previous version became obsolete, THAT would kill console gaming.

I think it's the other way around.
I think that PC-gaming like we know it, is slowly dying, because of accessible, short and mainstream games. Games for the masses that never were gamers before.
Consoles thrives because of this, since more and more and more people realize that the games they want to be playing are console-games.
It's sad really, that I can say this as a PC-gamer. I do own consoles too, but my favourite has always been my PC.

No it is not dying, having a console every 3 years would be terrible. I don't play PC as much as I do console, but I don't think PC is dying either.

Gaming is on the rise and I don't see it dying for a really long time.

Edit: I wanted to add one more thing, I don't play games because of the console, I play videogames because of the GAMES.

PC gaming is in many ways less accessible than console gaming is, just look at all the virtual marketplace services that are getting offered for the 360 versus Steam, I've used both of them, you can get all the cool media and other stuff you want off the marketplace, off Steam all you can buy are games, when it comes to online purchasing software, Microsoft has a leg-up in that round for sheer convenience, sure you can get that song off ITunes on the PC or that movie streamed off Netflix, but Microsoft made the innovation that always brings people in, they made it a one-stop shop.

So no console gaming is not dying and if PC gaming isn't careful about the whole "we're so much better" attitude than they'll be the ones we have to worry about.

I'd disagree. PCs have a far greater library of casual games.

Here's a clue - you're on it right now :p

Of-course it has a larger library of casual games.
PC is far simpler to make games for, and has been around for much longer than any console be cause of the generation-shifts in the console market.
And that's just it. Old things die.
Sure PC will probably live on, but it's losing ground on the consoles fast.

All I know is my gut says "maybe".

Both The Big Picture episode PC gaming is dead. Long live PC gaming and the more recent extra credits episode Consoles are the new coin-op have some degree of truth in them (even if MB . Eventually, we won't have "console or pc gaming"...we'll just have games. The medium will have finally conquered its biggest challenge--accessibility.

The Xbox might be dieing, unless MS get their act together and start releasing some more worthwhile exclusives.

PS3 is doing just fine for the moment though. And the Wii is kind of steady as always, but we'll supposedly have a new Nintendo console in a year or 2.

Last month PC gaming was dying, now consoles are dying? Honestly we should just stop trying to predict what will fail and what will not. Consoles are solid for at least another few years, and possibly more after the next generation comes to pass. PC gaming has been "dying" for as long as I can remember, but it's still a popular way to play games.

Rather than old markets having some sort of massive death, what seems to be happening is the expansion of what were once small markets into massive aspects of gaming. Even if any of our current gen methods of gaming die, it will be a long, slow proccess, and by the time they well and truly die, we'll probably all be able to agree it's for the best, as long as we're not hopelessly clinging to our nostalgia.

Nothing is dying and wont die for a long time. Either way causing panic wont do any good, not that there is a reason to cause panic, but you did it anyway..

Already have.
My ps3 gets used less and less while my pc gets used more and more.
I liked the ps3 when I first got it and it was a ?media center? loaded with potential but now I?m getting the feeling that this potential will never be met and it just feels like an overpriced game console.
Consoles used to be the cheap & uncomplicated way of gaming but they are swiftly becoming as complicated and expensive as a pc. Not there yet but it?s going to get to the point where it isn?t worth it anymore.
Already I see that most of my friends that had the ps1 & 2 never moved on to the ps3 or 360. I have a feeling that when the next gen comes around, I?ll probably just invest in a good PC.

Mission... Accomplished.

OT: Console gaming is far from dying, especially with the amount of games these days meeting the demands of their drunken frat-boy demograph. I think the majority of people prefer consoles because, overall, there is less fiddling.

Home console gaming dying? No. PC gaming dying? No. Handheld gaming dying? Well...

Smartphones and iOS apps and 'dollar games' are killing the handheld market, simply because people are finding it harder and harder to justify a £30 title (especially among the mountain of shovelware) for something they could pick up for 99p to £5 on an app store, and as smartphones and iOS systems are mobile devices, it's classed as mobile gaming. Not only that, but if you already own a smartphone or iPod touch, or iPad or whatever wouldn't you rather just get a few 99p games for that rather than shell out another £250 for some new iteration of a handheld like the 3DS or PSP NGO AND be expected to pay for games for those same new systems at £30 a-piece? You can of course justify it as a gamer, but what about casual gamers? Mums? Girlfriends? Younger audiences?

Depends on who you ask, I won't be buying anymore consoles, for me that is, if I have kids in the future that's another story, but personally i'm done with console gaming, not for any hate towards them, I just don't have the time anymore.
