Right, so the GCSE results came out a couple of days ago and people have posting their scores onto Facebook whether they're good, bad or mediocre. But its not just that some people put every ounce of their lives on it and things that were once private have become openly public. We've all heard it on the news about 'Facebook predators' picking up low self-esteemed girls and doing all sorts of nasty things with them and what not. So what do you think, does Facebook probe into peoples lives and allow every fibre of your life on show and is Facebook potentially dangerous or am I just being conservative?

Facebook is just something I use for stalki- I mean... keeping in touch with old friends who have moved away.

Facebook idiots post way too much stuff on there, that whole thing where you can display where you currently are... that's just unnecessary and potentially dangerous.

I can't remember the last time Facebook probed me at all. The required information for starting a Facebook account isn't much more probing than the information required for this forum. If you take someone with a lot of posts on any forum, you can probably figure out a lot about them, too.

Some people put way too much information out on the internet, yes. Facebook is just one of the many places they do that.

I barely use it. Once in a while to talk to a friend on an instant messenger. And it mucks that up fairly often.

You don't have to give it your info if you don't want to. I don't have an avatar or any info about me on it. Just my name.

lolage. its always been the same on the internet. Idiot are going to do stupid things on it. the fact that every single person on my facebook is someone i have met at least twice hopefully means I'm not an idiot.

but i don't see why you are complaining, for you, you can now obviously see who the idiots are by their GCSE results

Only if people are stupid enough to put far too much information on there.

Yes I've probably put far too much information on there. Bugger.

If you add a paedophile then frankly you deserve all you get.

Facebook provides people with an opportunity to update their social lives via the internet. It has its good points and bad points.

Facebook sells your information to companies and such. If you place in your status that you are a smoker, Facebook will submit that to a statistics company for a price. I don't know if they sell to individuals. It wouldn't surprise me. A company was having hiring workshops for their accounting firm (FYI: It's not a good sign when an accounting firm uses workshops and not interviews to hire) and they miraculously got my numbers despite my information only being available to firneds. THe comapny didn't even exist yet, they wanted me to be a founding member, so it's not like my friends could rat me out.

They prolly paid facebook for information. They know I went to Dawson College for Accounting and recently graduated, then they sold my phone number :)

I don't have a Facebook account, so it's not too intrusive on my life. But I can't speak for others.

People choose exactly how much information they put on there and exactly who can see it, I don't really see what the problem is.

Sadly, when you sign up to facebook you have to agree to there Terms of Service.

One of there Terms of Service is that any and all information you post on there website belongs to facebook and that you give them full privilege to sell your personal information to companies of the highest bidder.

Yes, i am one of those people who always reads Terms of Service. It's also why my Facebook, before i deleted it, contained no personal information or pictures.

Deleting is a bit of a *****, you got to dig for it otherwise you just deactivate it. What a load of shit on that.

OT:

As pretty much everyone says its not intrusive because the user has to decide how much discretion they use. Facebook might not discourage it but they don't force you to either.

You can't really say something is intrusive if its used willingly.

Dildo's, for example, can't be called invasive if you're jamming them up your own ass.

Yes, I believe that Facebook does reveal too much about a person's personal life. If your a kid that Just wants to let their friends know what there up to, then Facebook is perfect. The problem is that anybody can see it. It really comes down to how much a person is willing to tell about there selves. Moderation is key to fixing this problem.

Yeah, I can understand this. I read the terms as well, and ofcourse they make it as discouraging to read as possible. It's why I have no contact information, or no real personal information on the account. I won't have to dig too too much if I delete mine.

And it's also true that nothing is forced. I think it's more intrusive of the companies for gathering your information. YOU post your photos on facebook, facebook doens't just find them and add them to the account
