FF7 is one of the better JRPG's but it doesn't hold up in my opinion. Final Fantasy 5 did the Aeris scene and much better with Galuf actually saving the crew and your hard work being useful etc.

FF7 in my opinion is definetly overrated but by no means a bad game. It's much better than most other games, just given too much praise like Halo 3, or (yeah I said it despite the fact I think it as well) Half-Life 2 or MGS4, it's critics who are bored by shit games giving incredibly scores to good games when they shouldnt have those scores. It's just expected of the gaming industry to overrate a few games, but FF7 was the most overrated game ever imo. Personally I prefer FF9 with the story but there is no denying the impact and how much that SE has milked FF7 for with sequels, prequels and the only decent one out of them being Crisis Core which is an awesome game in its own right.

All video games are overrated. They're just games.

Then again, if you're going to do something, you might as well do it passionately. I, personally, think everyone is too fond of everything, but I respect people who go to great lengths to convey their love for any given object.

I recently finished a re-play of FFVII. I'd say it's not overrated, considering it was released 12 years ago. That's right. 12. It's a great story, especially compared to the other offerings released in 1997 (Goldeneye 007, Doom 64). It's not a bad game, but it looks very dated right now. At the time it came out, the graphics -- especially in some of the cutscenes (thank you commodorejohn for noting the inconsistency) -- were some of the best out there on a console (even though they were prerendered FMVs instead of being live-rendered).

I enjoy the story in this game, but playing it through again 12 years later makes me realize how long-winded it is and how dated everything feels. The game gets preachy at some points (OMG SAVE THA EARTH LIFESTREAM LAWLS), and the story is almost exactly the same as one of Square's previous offerings.

That all being said, gameplay-wise, it's an incredibly well-balanced and well-paced game. The type of pace in this game (as far as the play goes, not the story) is something that I'd like to see from new and current games. Assume that your player can figure things out and go from there.

So no, I don't think it's overrated, when reading reviews from that era. I do think that people who played through it a hundred times in 1997 and haven't touched it since tend to look at the game through rose-tinted lenses, though. Play it through again, people, it's a good game, but not the be-all and end-all of everything RPGs (actually as an RPG it's not great. You don't play any role -- only the fights are really unscripted).

I was fairly late to the party with playing Final fantasy 7. Played it in 2000 or so, after I played later final fantasys. I really did enjoy playing it. However I do think it's over rated. I mean it did have a good story, and good gameplay. But there was also nagging flaws which let the game down; making it less than perfect. Time hasn't been good to it either though, really. The graphics are pretty damn old now, and so is the gameplay mechanic. I've tried replaying Final Fantasy 7 numerous times, but It just doesnt keep me attatched to it now.

You honestly had to be there when it came out. At the time everything about it was wonderful beyond compare, although it hasn't aged as well as many would have hoped it did. I did not follow the hype, I didn't post stuff on message boreds or hunt down my friends and/or strangers about it, I simply enjoyed the game.

It had a good magic system, good story, interesting if not sometimes confusing characters, and for some people an emotional following. Now I'm not trying to sound like some fanboy of the series heck I only played a quarter of all the games in total, but I emotionally enjoyed this game in both it's victories and defeats. Way back before I used the internet there was just something to like. I chuckled, I cheered, and yes I did shed a tear. I think it was a great game.

Is it overrated? Yes. Does that mean it's a bad game? Not really.

I haven't played it yet, but I might get it just out of curiousity
The graphics were horrible even in it's day. You might not be able to play it without your eyes bleeding.

Never played it so I cant say really. But considering how many like it, I'm guessing is lives up to the hype.
I'm with this, "Dude".

Obviously a lot of people like it, so they must be doing SOMETHING right.

I'll admit I enjoyed it and it affected me on a deep and personal level, but I'm not going to pretend it's a perfect game. Pretty damn good, but not perfect.

What always got me was the art-style of the characters flip-flopping between their more realistic representations and their caricatured "chibi" avatars. It wasn't even so much the flip-flopping as much as it was that a significant portion of the pre-rendered cut-scenes feature both, instead of just focusing on the "life-size" models (leaving the "mini-them" models in-game). I mean, they're pre-rendered, there's no processing time taken up by having lower-res character models in the video; the video is just an image sequence regardless of what's on them. Sure, maybe the "full-grown" models took longer to render during production of the cinematics, but I just can't see it as anything but bad design at least and a feeble cost-cutting strategy at most.

Overrated? Probably, but primarily because of the fanbase. (Which is legendarily one of the most annoying fanbases out there, next to Naruto and Dragonball Z.)

It was a massive shift from anything in the final fantasy series until that point: 3d Graphics, High-Tech world (I don't count FF6 as high-tech... steampunky I give it, but not high tech), and a grittier, less heroic main character. (Which unfortunately was poorly translated into FF8, giving all final fantasies the steriotype of being emo, even though FF9 and 10 had much more energetic heroes). The materia system was innovative and different, and, assuming that the player had prior experience with Final Fantasy, relatively simple. (Final Fantasy as a whole has never been good at addressing how powerful a spell or effect is without tacking on a 2, 3, ara, or aga to the end of something.) It made people think much harder about weapons and armor before tacking them on.

Looking back on it now, it's not quite as amazing... primarily because squaresoft has modeled almost every final fantasy after 7 after it (FF9 excluded... and honestly I find 9 better than 7).

Honestly, I could see Square-Enix making a boatload of money by re-making the game with updated graphics and added voice acting... Hell, I'd buy it.

Is FF7 overrated? Let me put it this way, is watching golf boring? (in the event you actually find golf entertaining to watch, the rhetorical answer to that rhetorical question is supposed to be 'yes')

Only Played Crisis Core. The level-grinding isn't even grinding in that game which made me mad but this isn't the place to ramble on now is it?

In all honesty I'm going to find it and play it.

I would say that its very slightly overated.
It seems to carry so much hype that it would be almost impossible to live up to. I still think its a great game, but just not as great as some people make it out to be.

Just a little, its still better, story wise and polish wise, than some of the games that are coming out today but that gap is getting larger and larger. Its a game for an age, but that age has passed. Still had a blast though.

In my opinion. FF7, 8 and 9 was the Final Fantasy high point.

After this it just went downhill. 10 was average at best, so was 10-2, haven't played Online and 12 was just horrible. Those 3 games were just when they had great gameplay mechanics, great storylines and likeable characters... except Aerith in FF7 but thats another story.
