i have been a fan of this series since i got my copy of FF on nintendo and i saw a decline in the series after 7 and the creators left square..
after constant tries for the series to peak i just see it getting closer to that imminent final crash that i personally believed happened at 8 and could never recover...
what do you guys think (also if you have no stock in the game series dont bother posting please :D)

It's loaded the gun, pulled back the hammer, and has it resting on its temple.

No it is not. It may never be as good as FFVI again but it is still good and successful.

Though most of this forum will say it is because Final Fantasy is a JRPG and we all know how this forum seems to have a huge bias against JRPGs.

I'm pretty sure that it's been circling the drain ever sense it got into the double-digits.

[sub] I don't like Final Fantasy..... [/sub]

People are complaining that it's gone down the drain but that is not true and has never been true. It may eventually become crap but for now it's still brilliant. The only thing Final Fantasy has done is evolve and change, and become more modern with each successive instalment, and because it's different to the earlier ones (not necessarily worse, nor better, but merely different), people complain. If the series was the same as it was, or hadn't changed much from, the games like VII and VIII, then everyone would complain that the series was stale and generic. Instead, they've made an effort to change things around every time and people complain about that instead. Final Fantasy is by no means dead, nor down the drain, and I see it becoming even better and stronger in subsequent titles. Eventually it will die, as all good things do, but we are a long way from that yet.

It's a hit and miss. And some people love FF games that others hate.

I don't think it's declining much at all. At first when i played FF7 i was under the impression that anything after FF6 was terrible. Then i played FF10 and thought it was brilliant, but i knew other people hated it. FF13 was fun for me too, it was linear but i still enjoyed playing through it with friends.

I would have agreed with this post a few months ago but since buying 13 and really enjoying it I think that I have to disagree. Sometimes I think it would do the games some good, critically anyway, to not all be under the Final Fantasy banner and judged seperatly as they are all different games but I guess that would be a dumb move finacially. The series is not at its peak, I agree with the OP that was 8, but you never know in the future.

Yeah, it's about as dead as PC gaming is in general.

You should ask Dice about that BTW.

I sounds strange but I play Final Fantasy games for the story, yes FFXIII is linear but I'm loving the story so I can look past the fact that I have absolutely no control over how the story progresses or at what pace.

It's definitely declined. 7 and 8 were my favourites, but after 9 it took a serious downturn. Especially with X, X-2 and XII. I liked XIII, but it was nowhere close to my favourite game of all time.

Yep.

Oh, fans are still buying the games in droves and will be as long as there's confirmation bias in the world. As internet reviewer Noah Antwiler put it, no addiction is as easy to exploit as Final Fantasy. That's not the problem.

The problem is that Square's COMPLETELY incapable of producing anything efficiently. I don't care how much anyone likes or hates FF13, it took four years to make with a team of over 300 people. That's just unacceptable. That's a black hole for money. Meanwhile Naughty Dog made both the Uncharted games in the same amount of time as FF13 spent in production with just 100 strong, and Bioware made both the Mass Effect games in that time with comparable resources.

Call me nuts, but I don't see things going well for them no matter how many sales they get. They've been stuck in PS2 development practices for years at this point with no revision and have continually been struggling to produce game assets because of it. All it's going to take is one more big push forward in gaming technology for them to be left completely behind.

I don't have a biased, I have played JRPGs and the ones I played I loved, but I do believe it's spiraling down the drain. I haven't had much experience with Final Fantasy games (bar X and X-2 and Crisis Core), but my experience hasn't been the best, yeah they were pretty cool, Crisis Core being the only one I thoroughly enjoyed. Judging from the fact that I played the more recent ones it seems to me like it is getting worse, especially after what I heard about XIII. If a series has been going on as long as this one has will obviously been dying out at this stage.

See but you are one person with that opinion and I am sure maybe at least a thousand others say that too but Final Fantasy is still selling like hotcakes and just because the quality is not to your liking does not mean it is of low quality so it is still alive and by no means circling the drain.

Also "If a series has been going on as long as this one has will obviously been dying out at this stage." I will point at Mario and rest my case that long running does not mean dying.
