I sounds strange but I play Final Fantasy games for the story, yes FFXIII is linear but I'm loving the story so I can look past the fact that I have absolutely no control over how the story progresses or at what pace.
Its not strange to play Final Fantasy for the story (why else would you play it?) But XIII's story is mediocre at best, I dont care about any of the characters like I did in 6,7 or 8 and its too one note. In FF7 there were loads of story arcs, plot devices, set-pieces, themes of love and evil etc. But in FF XIII its seems as if they never really developed on the story much.

I'm pretty sure that it's been circling the drain ever sense it got into the double-digits.

[sub] I don't like Final Fantasy..... [/sub]
Seconded, although i can't vouch for 9. 8 is where it dropped for me.
meaning 8 was good, then downhill from then on

I used to be a big final fantasy fan, all the way to 10 (i enjoyed that btw, dont understand most of the hate it gets, didnt even mind tidus that much) but... After 12 (the first ff to let me down, made me wonder why i wasnt playing an mmo if i really wanted to play this kind of game) I just stopped giving a damn and find it hard to be excited about the series anymore.

Nostalgia and good memories are the only reason I even still hope for a rekindling of the old magic...
Or maybe im just not the target audience anymore, i dont know ><

It ended for me after X-2. Any of them after that don't have the same appeal.

I'm going to say No, but with a caveat.

The series is definitely still going strong but it's been a long time since I've personally been interested in any of the games. I used to be a huge FF fan but starting with 9 and it's horrid art style and "retro" gameplay I just can't really get into the series at all. I did enjoy X to some extent, and X-2 was a fun bit of fluff, but that's about it. I don't know if it's because my personal tastes have changed or if it's because the series itself has changed but even though the FF train continues onward I'm no longer a passenger.

VG Chartz has the sales (as of 1st December 09) at 4.05m for the PS3 and 1.32m for the 360, which puts it on a comparable of even slightly better position than Final Fantasy XII from the numbers I found.

So, yeah.

Not to mention it's been 6 months since than, and it's all too possible that the numbers could have increased further.

Higher Sales=Not circling drain=Nostalgia fools=Move along, citizen.

Also, VIII was the worst Final Fantasy game.

Why else would you play it if not for the story? I love FF, but the gameplay isn't exactly riveting.

OP: It started going down after 10, I enjoyed 10, but x-2 was the beginning of the end. Hopefully FF13V can revive the series.

For a series that's been around as long as it has I'd say the old girl was holding up very well. Sure some of the decisions on the recent games where bad but at least they weren't Sonic bad.

I got hooked by FFVII and have been a diehard fan ever since, but the series has been having serious ups and downs.

I love VII, I used to hate VIII, IX is my favorite game in the series even after I've played pretty much all the older ones as well, X was so bad I completely changed my mind about VIII, and XII was about as enjoyable as VII except that it was the gameplay that was good and not the story. (I never got around to playing XI because I don't want to play an MMORPG no matter what it is.)

Final Fantasy XIII is the end of the road for me, though. If you want to know why, look at this:

http://www.vgcats.com/comics/

This pretty much sums up the general tone of every review I've read. By the look of things, they haven't CHANGED the gameplay so much this time around - they've just removed everything that ever made the series good.

The series has always been one of the biggest cash-cows out there, and because of this it will very likely carry on for decades to come. However, I'm giving it a rest for the time being!

Well I liked 9, 10 was pretty decent, 10-2 lets never speak of that one. I loved 12, and as for 13...
Ouch.

It needs a fresh infusion of ideas, I'll give it that much. Seems to be playing along with other games that are out there instead of going all out and being as memorable or revolutionary as the older titles.

Final Fantasy got pulled into the wake of a whirling vortex round about FF7 and has been getting pulled down progressively further ever since. It's only a matter of time before it slips down the sinkhole and never appears again.

chk chk boom.

Almost totally agreed if I didn't love FF12 so much. That was like the last glimmer of anything good .
Still, that's when I noticed the music to become dramatically non-iconic.

Difficult to say, it's not dead and there's still a lot of potential in the series I guess.
But the creators really need to rethink where they are going with it.

X-2 was when it pulled the trigger and then got instantly reanimated as a stagnating zombie.

... Someone throw it a Phoenix Tail *snicker*.
