Allow me to explain, being an avid film fan I sometimes go to the cinema but I would always go with friends. This lead to personal annoyances as my friends have different tastes than me and I would miss films I wanted to see. Thankfully I made plans with a friend to see Black Swan during a school holiday - as I've been excited about the film for a while - however my friend saw the film before the holiday so throwing caution to the wind I went to see Black Swan and The Fighter in a double feature on my own at the cinema. I have no problem with it as I repeated this yesterday with Inception and have plans to see True Grit next month. My question to you Escapists is, 'Does this seem weird?'

Generally something's only weird when other people would care. I don't think anyone would care if they saw someone was watching a movie by themselves.

The most shocking part is that Inception is still in theaters. Thanks to the Oscars, I guess.

And it's not weird. It'd be awkward seeing Black Swan with other people, imo.

No, nothing wrong with it. Infact, I hate going with other people now. They keep talking during it, or tend to contradict your own tastes when you actually get to the theatre (unless you pre-paid).

Annoying.

I almost always go to the movies by myself, so it doesn't strike me as being weird.

Nope. I find that watching it with other people spoils the movie. They always talk or fidget or don't understand. So I go alone, get myself enough popcorn to drown in it, sweets and soda and just make movie marathons. It's fun.

It was quite bizarre yes...the fact that I was the only one getting the jokes in the movie made it even more strange.

I dont think so. I like to go see movies alone or with friends. If I want to see a movie and no one wants to go, i'll go alone. WHo says you have to go with someone?

I used to think it's a little weird, but lately I've tried it a few times and I really like it.

For a long time I had a cinema subscription (£13.50 a month all the films you could eat) and would often go once or twice a week to see the latest releases by myself. Whether it was the latest blockbuster or a romcom because nothing else was on.

I knew my girlfriend wasn't interested in seeing Black Swan, and so I went to go see it after work one day before she had gotten off herself.

I did feel a little awkward going to see it by myself. I think I felt self conscious because I am a twentysomething and people might assume I went to go see the movie only because of makeout scene. Oh well, I really enjoyed the movie regardless, and no it wasn't because of that scene - I really identified with Nina's issues with being her own worse enemy.

I worked at Disney World last summer, and for about six weeks I had an exceptionally bad and batshit-crazy roommate. She hated my guts for about the first five weeks we were roommates, and I was downright scared of her. I spent as much time as possible away from our apartment throughout those weeks, waiting for my request to move papers to get processed.

In that time I went to the theater alone at least three times. Granted, it was usually in the early afternoon on weekdays, so there weren't too many people there anyway. I didn't feel too awkward, though. I'm sure a few people noticed, but they didn't say anything and I didn't expect them to. Plus, I was seeing things like Inception and Iron Man 2, so they weren't really films that require another person to enjoy.

Haha I asked this exact same question of the escapist a little while ago and got this exact same answer.
Peoples hang up on going ot the cinema with others is completely illogical, and if they ever call you weird for going ot the cinema on your own just ask them why its weird- not a single one will be able to give you an answer.

So no mate there's nothing weird about it at all.

I did used to quite a lot, but i have recently been going to the cinema quite a lot with my sister.

Though she has a job now, and she's moved away with my mum, so we will be doing it a lot less now which is a shame.

I would rather be with someone, but as sad as this may sound, my problem is that I have no friends to go with.

Second option.

I've never been by myself, and that's always been part of it - see a film with someone and you get to talk about it after.

It would be even more awkward going to see it with a close friend then on the way out spotting two old age pensioners sat there, just glaring angrily at it. I guess they thought it was just a normal ballet film. XD

As for the OP, not at all. ...Unless you're about 50 years old, male and watching Twilight. Then it might be a little weird...

I pretty much always go to movies by myself. I mean, now and then a family movie or something but watching a movie is generally a personal experience. Unless of course you are going to be joking about the movie and talking to friends the whole time, in which case get the hell out of the theatre and go watch movies at home *fist shake*
