I don't know of any 16 year olds who I could genuinely trust with a rifle, including myself. Get one if you wish, but be freaking careful. Maybe that will convince them that a gun, if used responsibly, isn't the worst thing in the world.

Yes, he is. I'm an advocate of strict gun control, the only people who should be allowed guns are the police, the military, and licensed shooting ranges for recreational purposes. And I say that as someone who has used guns before, fired both blank and live ammo, and has had training in how to maintain and use an L-98 rifle as well as other weaponry.

I guess my point is, don't get a freaking gun, you idiot!

Well, neither are wrong. While a rifle can be okay, rifles can cause problems in the wrong hands. Rifles create more problems than solve usually, however the problems can be minimalism to basically none if you're responsible.

Have you ever fired a gun before? Been to the firing range? Know about gun safety?
I would be hard pressed to give a 16 year old boy a gun. I especially would feel weary if everyone else in my family knew nothing about gun safety. Even if you know how to operate it, that doesn't mean accidents can't happen.

You're 16. Just move out in two years and get in then. Why do you need one anyway? Back when I was your age kids just bought crack.

From an engineering prospective, guns are fascinating. From a 'people are fucking idiots and we will all kill each other' prospective, guns are bad. An American's right to bare arms went right out of date about 100 years ago.

Gun laws in the U.S. are stupid as hell. SO many people die due to guns compared to other countries.

So no, I don't think you should get a gun.

I don't think any civilian should be allowed have a gun unless it's for hunting.

However disregarding that I suppose he is being irrational, guns are only dangerous in the hands of idiots.

thats what i said! but he thinks it can kill on its own.

Just going to ask the question everyone is thinking...

You're 16, don't have oversised rodents in your garden and probably are'nt about to join one section or another of the Military or the police force...

So you need a gun, Why exactly?

Please don't take this as me trying to profile you or anything, but are you sure you're not just trying to be condescending to your Mom's Boyfriend? because that would be a lot more understandable than actually owning a lethal weapon and spending masses of cash on ammunition to shoot at things that can't move and may result in someone getting hurt........

The question to the poll is Asymmetric - it can't be answered! Is he ignorant or does he have a point? If I vote yes which one am I voting yes to?

On topic: Unless you live deep in hunting country (and I mean bears in Montana not illegal immigrants in New Mexico) I wouldn't teach a 16 year old how to handle a gun. Once your 18 you can go ahead and make all your own decisions.

I would love to shoot a gun to see what all the fuss is about but I still think them being legal is dumb.

Well that's a bit better but honestly I don't think you should get it. Fact is, you live in your parents house. You should expect to follow certain rules and they are not out of line with this one. Even if you don't agree with it and know you will be safe you have to realize that the reason they feel so against this is because they are scared. Having a gun in the house clearly frightens them. I don't know what kind of relationship you have with your mother and her boyfriend, but for their sake I would just forget it until you move out. They may not admit it to you but they are frightened by the thought alone of the gun. If you live on your own in a couple of year then at least it's only your responsibility and not theirs. Think of how they would feel if an accident did happen? They have no reason to give you something that dangerous when you have no real need for it. It would always be stressing them out and on their conscience.

I love guns, but if they're going to ruin the fabric of your family you might not want to go that route. If you're not the head of the household, I'd suggest waiting until you have your own place, or just talk her down to something more manageable, like pellet guns, or something, unless you plan on hunting, which is a different story.

And for everyone asking why he would want one, you've probably never shot a gun, and I can say it's among the best ways to relieve stress I've ever experienced. It gives the mind and body something to focus on, and remove yourself from all the problems in the world, and just focus on blowing the shit out of something.

Just get a BB or airsoft gun instead, everyone wins!!!

Or if you must have a gun maybe a .22 that's going to be kept under lock and key 24/7...

No offence but i would be uneasy around a 16 year old who has a gun as well. Why is that you ask? Well because 16 year olds are immature and have bad forward thinking, and really should not be using guns un-supervised. Its as simple as that. Its not a matter of experience or whatever, but at your age you haven't yet developed certain parts of your brain that allow you to think with any decent sense.
