I got my first rifle, a nice little .22 at 12 and was taught firearm rules with it, guns arnt dangerous as long as your not stupid with them and follow the firearm rules. In saying that if its going to screw up your family hold off until your older.

At 16, I don't think that you should be allowed to have a gun. He should discuss it with you instead of being childish though.

Funny thing. Within the US states that have looser gun control laws tend to have lower rates of violent crime. We don't have a violent crime problem because we have a lot of guns, we have a violent crime problem because we're a bunch of uneducated assholes. The fact that we have more shootings is certainly related to the fact that we have lots of guns. However, this may come as a shock to some people, but you don't need a gun to hurt somebody, and the presence of lots of guns generally makes it far more risky for violent idiots to go around attacking people.

Maybe you can compromise by saying that she can keep the gun in her closet and giving her the key...

I always believed in the notion that if one person has a deadly weapon they will use it for evil but if more than one person has one they will fear each other and play nice so I believe that if the entire world had guns we would all use them for good because the second someone abuses the privilege anyone else can just shoot them.

I own more guns than most people like to think about. Being a militarist in the truest sense of the word I keep all my weapons well cared for and LOCKED UP when not in use. Form what I see its this. If you want to use it, whether for target shooting (good stress reliever if you ask me) or for hunting (Venison... mmmm) I'm all for it. IF that is you

a) know what to do around guns (no idiotness please)
b) don't shoot someone not trying to kill you first
c) don't keep ammo in the same safe/gun locker w/e as the gun

Well, I am an american yes, however without my right to bear arms I would be dead at present.

As someone whose brother blew his brains out with a shotgun 10 years ago, I would say that your friend is right to be concerned about having a firearm in the hands of a teenager.

A gun isn't a lethal deadly weapon unless you make it one. Would you parents let you have a knife? People mostly assume (especially non-gun owners) that every single gun owner on the planet is a raging psychotic just waiting to crack and go on a killing spree...

What use do you have for a gun? While I'm sure you're responsible I don't think Minors should have deadly firearms. This isn't Mad Max children don't need guns. Guns are for rich Aristocrats and Arabs who spend thousands to shoot Grouse in moors.

Oh I agree, when gun control works, it works. I love the mechanical aspect of a gun. But people are morons, and a moron with a gun is a dangerous thing. I just think that it's unnecessary for people to own a gun outside a firing range or for hunting.

I have a gun for hunting...other members of the human race, ha!

/joke, seriously I don't actually own a gun or hunt anything for that matter.

On topic: Um are you legally allowed to? I assume there's some kind of protocol and you would need to go through to get a rifle.

I suppose the only question really is do you need one? Could you not use something less dangerous that still fires something? I've got nothing against people shooting but it seems to me the only people who really need live fire guns/ammo are people who are employed by the military or police, for obvious reasons and even then only when they are doing their job. An actual rifle could lead to problems further down the line because they are potentially very dangerous.

Well, guns do kill people so their fear is justified. I've never been one to keen on the idea of owning a gun. Especially since I live next door to a guy who thinks he's Rambo. People have diffrent opinons on weapons and wether or not you are properly trained in them, accidents can happen.

It doesn't help that I live in Massachusetts and over here, you're not even allowed to own a gun unless you're 18 ( I think. I'd have to brush up on the law later.)

Why are you going to use a gun in the first place?

Is it for hunting? Is it because you have somekind of unrational need for one? Do you really need a gun in the first place? Is it to compensate for something? (Don't take the last one seriously).

Don't take it the wrong way, but "because i really like shooting" sounds like a psychopath.
