Don't take it the wrong way, but "because i really like shooting" sounds like a psychopath.
And what would you call somebody who "really likes fencing" or "really likes doing martial arts?"

Don't take it the wrong way, but what you said makes you sound like a jerk.
Well, I do suppose that it could be use in a sporting context. However, just imagine all the situations that pops in my head when I hear "Because I really like shooting". I can tell you that shooting at a target range does not come first to my mind.

As for your "jerk" comment, You're doing it wrong!

But seriously, how do I end up as the jerk in this story?

What? You're calling him ignorant because he thinks a 16 year old shouldn't be allowed a gun? Of course he has a bloody point, if you're not judged responsible enough in the eyes of the law have a nice, refreshing beer or fuck someone then I don't how you can be possibly be responsible enough to own something which is designed with the sole purpose of killing shit.
the javelin was designed to kill people yet there used at high schools swords were and people still fence. if its locked up its as harmless as a big expensive stick

He is over reacting, in my experience only people who don't know how to handle a weapon are that scared of them, as long as your respect and take care of it properly you should have a problem.

Okay, let me ask you this, what good came come from it?
its better than being cooped up in the house playing video games and its a way to meet people or bond. it teaches responsibility and is a great stress reliever. after having a rough day shooting some rounds down range can make your day good.
Okay, now think of all that can go wrong.

1. If you got in a rage, you have a weapon.
2. It could get stolen and used in a crime and you take the blame.
3. Accidental discharge [http://www.blastwave-comic.com/index.php?p=comic&nro=21]

etc...
haha! thats a funny comic but i know to keep my finger off the trigger and to treat every gun like its loaded

I don't think any civilian should be allowed have a gun unless it's for hunting.

However disregarding that I suppose he is being irrational, guns are only dangerous in the hands of idiots.
Not even self defense?

Big, EXPLOSIVE stick, and you'll note that Javelins are only used in high schools in the USA in North America, and the reason people still fence is because the points are balled.

At sixteen, for target shooting only, I can't see what's wrong. Keep it locked up under something heavy so no one can mess with it and blow themselves up and it should be fine. Just don't go crazy at all.

And, though I'm sure you're embellishing a little, from the description given he seems a bit high-strung.

Yeah, but what if you loose your temper?

Besides, the Second Amendment is an antique, no one in their right mind would try another rebellion in the US.

From an engineering prospective, guns are fascinating. From a 'people are fucking idiots and we will all kill each other' prospective, guns are bad. An American's right to bare arms went right out of date about 100 years ago.
I would like to see you try and take that freedom away from us. You will have to pry my gun out of my cold dead hands.

The key phrase is responsibility, something that a large number of Americans have repeatedly proven to not possess.

But your mom's boyfriend is being completely irrational.

Trained by an ex marine who also happens to be your dad?
Something tells me if you did do something stupid he would come home and make sure you did not do that again. (Which means you will make sure not to do something stupid XD)
So yeah, I think he is wrong... As long as Your dad and your mom both think you can handle having a gun (for target practice) then I don't see whats wrong.

What type of rifle, like an air rifle or something that could kill something larger than a toaster?

Well not like it matters. Personally I think he's ignorant, you seem to know what you are getting and the safety for it, so I would have no problems.

you may be right about the fencing but the gun CANT GO OFF if its locked, there is no way unless the incredible hulk broke in my house

No.
If guns are legal it means it is far more easy for dangerous people to acquire them.
They'll get them anyways, but it will make it harder.

Now if guns weren't around...

Yeah, but what if the rounds are improperly stored?
