Only if they try to kill someone or something like that. If its a small thing like stepping on your toes or biting you a tiny bit I would say no.

Well, 'beating' an animal is almost always wrong. Shouting at a dog lets it know it's done something wrong and scares it enough to not do it again, if you sound angry and imposing. Also, pulling sharply on the skin at the back of their neck works; which sounds cruel but actually this is the way that their mothers would punish them in the wild, so it communicates the fact they've done something wrong perfectly.

Hitting (as in rolling up a newspaper and tapping the dog on it's nose kinda hard) is okay in certain contexts. But usually they can tell if you're angry, so pointing and leering work well too.

Absolutely not. The worst thing that I do to my animals is close myself off in my room so that they can't bother me. They can still roam the house, but they can only bother each other.

The way your brother thinks a dog should be treated is the exact same way that underground, illegal dog fighters treat their animals in order to make them cruel enough for the ring. This is no way to treat a dog and it is abuse.

A dog that is frequently beaten and never shown love is much more likely to show aggression or potentially attack a human than a dog that has been treated properly. Rotweilers and dobermans, for example, have a reputation for being cruel and aggressive dogs, when in reality they have earned this reputation because these breeds attract owners who will mistreat them (like hicks looking for a "guard dog" or dog fighters).

There's a difference between hitting and beating. Hitting is ok, beating is not. Animals don't understand punishment for the most part other than pain.

You need to establish dominance with your pets, especially dogs, but they don't need to be beaten. A good smack on the snout will do it, or giving a treat when they do something good. Also, establish yourself as as the alpha male early on in their life by doing things like taking away their food while their eating.

You don't beat your pet. I really don't think circumstance has much to do with it. A tap will do the trick if you couple it with a raised voice.

You can smack them a bit but gently only enough to shock them. A good rule of thumb is "If they are shitting themselves then you are doing it wrong and should be arrested for animal cruelty."

Well a dog will not stop doing certain things like barking, they are dogs but if you hit them (not beat them but a hit to the nose is enough, nothing heavy) they will associate barking with pain and will stop doing them, you can't exactly reward them for not barking. Other things like coming to you when you call them can be rewarded and they will associate coming to you when yo call as being a good thing.

So yes and no.

When my dogs misbehave, I usually push them away from what they're doing and/or use a stern "hey" to get the message across that they've been found out. Usually works, as my dogs have some sense of right and wrong within the household. They know when they shouldn't be doing something.

However, my cat beats me up all the time, so he and I get into physical brawls every now and then. That's not punishment, though.

I work at a zoo. It's my job to wail on the animals to make sure they behave.

They hired me after the lions kept sleeping, the monkeys broke out, and some bears escaped to rape churches and burn women.

I have to lay the smack down to make sure they don't act up. One time I just beat down a monkey. That monkey was my friend too. Didn't know it was coming. Just had some jelly beans in my hand. "ooh, jelly beans" POW. Monkey didn't even do anything. Just to show the other monkeys I mean fucking business.

If you're talking about dogs, you do have to get a bit physical, but it doesn't necessarily have to hurt them. You either hit them with a curled up newspaper (it doesn't really hurt them much, but the noise scares them.) OR you grab the dog by the scruff of its neck and forcibly make it lay down (to show dominance) and yell at them. The dog should get the idea that it shouldn't have done whatever it did. Though if it's not something that warrants that much, putting your dog somewhere that it doesn't want to be for a few minutes works.

Hitting your dog will get the point across too, but if you do it regularly your dog will probably either develop violent tendencies or be scared shitless of people, so if you want a house pet, it probably isn't the right way to go. Plus it's flat out mean anyways.

I give my dogs a light smack on the butt if they do something that they aren't supposed to. That's as far as I go though.

at my house we have a rotweiller, so sometimes we do have to hit him (never ever on the head though) to get him to listen sometimes. but we havent had to do that in a while. it all depends on the situation and the dog

Your brother is either a lover of hyperbole or a massive asshole. I suggest you domesticate a tiger, and have the tiger chew on his feet or something. If he's not shitting himself, you're doing it wrong.

That was probably too harsh, but dogs are people too (or rather, they're better than that) and I don't think your brother would enjoy living a life of pants-shitting terror. I had a dog for seven years and I loved the shit out of him, he was a great dog and I don't recall us ever hitting him (it was mostly just stern, disapproving talking)
