I just finished a game of Halo Wars, that I won. A little while afterwards, I was messaged by my opponent, calling me a noob, and saying that I only won because I used Sanders (who is believed to be easier).

I see alot of this, not only pertaining to Halo wars, but many other games too. Like 2 piecing in GoW2, or melee spamming in L4D. So what I ask of you, my fellow escapists, is it wrong if it's in the game? My stand is that: if it's in the game, it goes.

Alot of times I hear things like, "things like that are only used as equalizers for players who don't have the skillz to do it the right way", or "only noobs use cheap tricks.

I'm sorry if this has been done before, but I could'nt find another one like it. So please, express your view's my fellow escapists.

Its always good to make the maximum use of everything at one's disposal, people such as those mentioned, were put on this earth to be ignored and nothing else.

If it is the game, it is fair game. Does it mean you are skilled at the game by using this method? By all means no.

Just because it's in the game it doesn't mean you can exploit it.

Of course, this only applies to multiplayer.

I see that type of complaining a lot in regards to juggernaut and CoD5, and while I think you can become a better player without that sort of stuff, you have every right to use what has been programmed into the game.

Sanders? I do believe her name is Anders. Anyway, that sounds like the same thing as when I made a hesitant venture into Gears of War online, and I was assaulted with "YOU CAN'T USE A SHOTGUN AT CLOSE RANGE, THAT IS SO CHEATING."
They say the same thing about chainsaws.

Weapons and such in the game is fine. Glitches and other piles of hogshit is cheap and irritating.

Really? Really REALLY?

While certain parts of the game do make a game unbalanced, and I DO get pissed when I get n00b-tubed, repeatedly, we really don't have any control over how people SHOULD play the game.

No, it's fair. It just occasionally makes the game less fun. Verdicted.

That's silly. If it's in the game then it was put there for people to use, so why not use it just because someone who isn't as good a player as you doesn't like it? If I find a tactic or weapon or something in any multiplayer game that works for me then I'll use it as long as it works, regardless of what anyone thinks. How is it cheating or game breaking to use what's been put in the game in the first place?

There is no such thing as cheap tricks.

In the end, the winner is the winner.

If you can kick someone in the shins in a fight, do it. Advantages = good.

There is nothing wrong with anything. People will whine about anything. It's just a form of nerd rage... thinking that you're better then your opponent and that the only way he can win is by luck or by exploiting or through use of "unfair" things. It's in the game, you can do it.

If you somehow hacked the game and used it to your advantage, then that would be pretty low.
I agree, but my plea is, that if it's in the game, then that the ways it was meant to be played.

In games like Halo where you just hunt down the one god weapon of the map, I think all MP is cheap, but that is just halo for me.

CoD4 is entirely different as you customize the class and there is xp and strategy to loading out your class. Now, some things like Nade launchers are cheap, and game devs should strive to balance the game and make score based off skill.

RTS is an ENTIRELY different subject. I've been called a noob in DoW2 (which admittedly I am but I digress) for using the space marines. They are the base class, some strong vehicles, but small numbers and expensive. RTS races are VERY balanced compared to some weapons in shooters. I imagine he was just QQing

Keeping in mind that I don't know the mechanics of Halo Wars all that well, here's my two cents;

If you're using a character, technique or weapon that makes it easier for you to win the game, it isn't cheap, it's just playing with the intention of winning. Calling that cheap would be the equivalent of saying Ryu in Street Fighter is unfair because he can knock you out of the air with a Shoryuken if you jump at him (heard that complaint before), or that Nightmare in Soul Calibur is unfair because his huge sword deals a lot damage (heard that before too), or that sniping in FPS's is unfair because it's possible to kill with one shot (natch). Just because your opponent can't find a way around the technique doesn't mean that technique isn't valid.

That said, I think this article [http://insomnia.ac/commentary/domination_101/on_cheapness/] speaks to the subject at hand very well.

Listen, when you punk someone and he does this "UR NOOB 4 BEETING ME OFF" thing that this idiot is doing, its to make themselves feel superior because you're off posting about how it hurt your feelings. This is wrong. You crushed the imbecile, thus, you should feel superior. Unfortunatly, its like arguing with a doorknob, as they will always blame your noobtrix.

The only proper responses to these people involve the words "mom" and "your" and "i screwed" and "while pwning your face"

The only way to beat them is to sink to their level. They will in nearly all cases tell you their mom is dead. This is a lie. And if its not, your response of "yeah cuz im huge" is all the more innapropriate and effective.

Keep in mind that games aren't perfect and programmers are not omnipotent. Just because something is in the game doesn't make it balanced or purposefully included 100% of the time.

Whether or not it's in the game does not affect whether or not it's cheap.

And simply it being in the game does not magically make it fair.

A former friend of mine used that as justification for keeping a character in D&D that rolled 16,16,17,15,18,15 as his stats. I said it was unfair for one character to be better than another in all areas (it was AD&D 2e, told him to reroll (I was the DM), and he got all pissy.

In real life, go cheap. It's survival. In games, don't go cheap. The game is meant to be mutually fun, and using dirty tactics makes it fun for you, but definitely not the others.

I admit that I strive for diversity in my gaming. For example, if I'm playing a fighting game, I'll do my best to learn multiple characters movesets, and try to learn as many combos as I can, rarely reusing them in the same match if possible, because I want the match to look cool.

I remember back when I used to play Super Animal Wars (some folks called this game Bloody Roar), Alice had a combo that was almost impossible to defeat, incredibly easy to string, and above all else, really *really* repetitive. My roommate and I had a "No cheaping with Alice" rule in the house, because if we didn't, it ceased to be a fun game, and became a constant string of Alice vs. Alice matches.

Not that you couldn't play as Alice, but you had to play with style.

But those are house rules and my personal gaming code. I expect no mercy in the online community, and I frequently lose matches because I try to mix it up rather than going with the tried and true. I accept this, but lots of folks won't.

In short, is it cheap if it's in the game? Sure. There have been plenty of games with downright broken shit in them. Does that mean that nobody should be able to use it? Depends. I personally don't find the "easy wins" fun, because I'm more about the game than the scoreboard at the end. Other opinions differ, and ultimately, if it's built into the game, even cheap is fair play.
