Count yourself lucky. Here we have a huge snow storm...then it's raining. I hereby call Moncton N.-B. Canada with the new name of "slush ville".

Freezing rain.... isn't that just hail?

Also, don't think they'll close the movies just because it's heavy snow...

Well I have the day off school, which is great, but I don't really want to go anywhere when it's snowing anyway. Slippery back-breaking roads and stupid twats throwing snowballs at you, sometimes just smeared competely subtly in your face, yeah, pretty good reason to attend the worst compulsory trivolity of an adolescent's life. right? Any day off school, and away from the barking, modern-sheep 'Twilight is the best thing ever' morons is a blessing to me. I'll take it, and revise for the most important exams in my life like I should be doing.

Oh wait... does this mean Bayonetta won't get delivered on time? OH FUCK! >8(

Britain would operate better if it just pissed down with rain every day of the year, we can handle that crap. Plus HMV wouldnt be closed because the doors have frozen shut

-22 celsius here, and snow up the arse. Get stuffed, you britons.

From what I assume, your country shuts down on snow because you don't have the stuff needed to keep roads/railroads/whatevers safe? Do you guys fit snow tyres during the winter, or have non-freezing diesel?
Well, because as a general rule it doesn't snow much, the majority of people don't have snow chains, and don't seem to know the garden twine trick. The trains shut down because we use electric trains; again, because it hardly ever snows it's not worth having diesel. The problem is when there's hard ice on the rails, especially the live rails: the trains just don't move.

On the roads, it's not really as big a problem as everyone likes to make out, provided that there's been decent gritting going on. At the moment we're running low on grit and salt, because we used it all in the last wave of snow, and that's screwing things over. Basically, we're not prepared for this amount of snow, because it's not normally this bad. Some snow is usual, several feet is not. We're a temperate island. Also remember that we're much more crowded than America or Scandanavian countries, or in face anywhere in Europe, really (for some reason everyone wants to live here; why's that if we're so terrible?), and this slows things down all the more when the snow hits.
Yeah it's perfectly understandable, seeing how you only experience the whole snow problem like once or twice every two years(?). I'd imagine it would cost way too much for cities to invest in snowplows and whatnots, just so you can go to work on those few days per year. It's just strange for a Finnish dude to imagine a whole country incapacitated because of snow, when we have it in abundance for about four months per year.

I love snow but I hate the fact that people can't drive on it. Come on! I didn't change my tires so I'm still driving with tires made for summer and I don't have any problems. I guess that the good drivers take the bus (because of the traffic) and the bad drivers take the car because it doesn't get dirty in the snow or something.

Totally. I don't think UK had even heard of Winter tires.

it is pathetic how easily England is brought to its knees by snow. I saw a new report today that said a school had been closed due to the level of snowfall. I kid you not, it was less than an inch. People just use it as an excuse to drop work and take a day off. Can't say I blame them but my school never closes so I get a little pissy at the inconsistency.

Wait, I wasn't aware that anything has actually closed down. I'm in central London and everything was ticking along like usual, went into the library and all this morning too (HA OP).

Last February or January when we had a week of snow the Uni and a lot of business around here did close down which was nice for a change I guess. Still, it didn't really seem necessary.
