I'll be honest, I've tried watching things I liked when I was 10-15, and they're mostly god-awful

I absolutely miss the Spielberg produced cartoons like Tiny Toons, Freakazoid, and especially Animaniacs (I'm like the only person who can recite all the US presidents thanks to this show). However the wonders of DVDs allows me to go back and watch full seasons of awesomeness.

Cartoon Network was at its PRIME during the Cartoon Cartoon "era." You had Dexter, PPG, Cow+Chicken, Ed*3, Time Squad, Courage, and Grim. Sadly Foster's Home can't be included in the list despite being one of the best shows ever. All these great shows, plus you had the Groovies. Awesome points if you remember those. Then to wrap it all up, you could get your anime fix with Toonami! (pre-Naruto, of course)

And then of course you have the days when Fox Kids was not only on, but *gasp* go? Batman, Beetlejuice, Beast Wars, Eek, SAM AND MAX, and X-Men? Ya, you can't beat that.

Got to admit, there were some good cartoons back then.
Recent cartoons kinda suck.
So just watch some anime instead.
There's quite a few good shows out there.

A little bit from column A, a little bit from column B.

Yes cartoons were better back in the day, but you have to allow for the nostalgia factor too.
I agree that cartoons nowadays suck, but I accept the fact that it's probably not as bad as I think it is.
Everyone from anywhere always thinks that cartoons were better when they were a kid, and we're no exception.

Still, I agree that Cow And Chicken was a hell of a lot better than Super Robot Monkey Team Hyper Force Go!

Just like all media, the older stuff is always better. It's a real shame that I can't watch some of my old favourites on TV anymore as well, instead there is Ben10 and other bland shit.

I miss invader zim... Its funny how that show got a lot of awards but was cancelled because lots of kids had bad taste (I heard that the show appealed to the 14-20 crowd...not sure but read about it in an article millenia ago).
It was popular. But the channel got complaints for the show being too scary for younger children. Shame they couldn't put it on some other channel.
Not true actually, yes the show got some heat from organizations, but the knife in Zim's squigally-sposh was scheduling. Nick could not hold Zim down to a set time-slot. They kept moving it around and people had a hard time figuring out when to tune in so the viewer numbers dropped, this some how get's translated to "low ratings." Also I think Nick started to catch on to Jhonen's other works (JTHM)

I made a thread about this on the 15th asking a similar question. Got the same response everyone is giving here. TV was much better when we were kids. Partly because it actually was better than TV today, and partly because we all have nostalgia glasses superglued on (Oh, just me? Well I never want to take those glasses off).

Off topic, just in case anyone's interested:

Cartoons back then were not afraid of political correctness, we had retarded ones and others with hidden more adult jokes in them and *gasp* JOKES YOU ACTUALLY HAD TO THINK ABOUT! These days most new cartoons I've seen don't seem to try that much on story, are just retarded and/or rely on pop culture references.

All I can say is thank god for the internet otherwise cartoons like this would never been seen again, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFdG8lZ4PJw

I dont think Invader Zim and Samuri Jack are quite old enough to be on your list.

OT: All the good cartoons get cancelled, remember Class of 3000? That show was the shit.

I grew up on the original Batman the Animated Series. The dark, violent, psychological, intelligent, and awesome cartoon. Now we have Sponge Bob, the light, happy, slapstick, brain dead, annoyance...

All nostalgia I'm afraid.

You're right, back in our day we had some pretty awesome cartoons, but we also had mountainous piles of shit, just like every other era. The reason you only remember the good is because they were good enough to stick with you for years. The same thing will happen now. Children will forget the crap they watched, only remember the good (and remember as well that Seinfeld Is Unfunny applies here) and when they grow up they will ***** about how it was better in their day.

For those not in the know, Seinfeld Is Unfunny refers to the phenomenon by which when a show comes out it is considered groundbreaking, incredibly cool and ahead of its time or else at least perfectly capturing a zeitgeist. When the show's time has passed and younger people go back to rewatch it, they don't understand why it is considered so great. The reason is because it has been copied, referenced and homaged so many times that it's impossible to consider what the feeling was like when the jokes first appeared. It's happened to Friends, Seinfeld, even Blackadder to a degree, Fawlty Towers, Monty Python, because all of these shows were the laid the ground work for all of our culture, we can't imagine a time without these shows.

My sister watched some of the cartoons I watched as reruns, there is only a four year gap between us, and most of them she couldn't see the brilliance, because since then the techniques they used have been used again.

Nostalgia can fuck the memory in unpleasant ways, but this is not one of them. Cartoons were better a decade ago. Immensely better.

I wasn't aware that people still made cartoons, what with shit like Hanna Montana and The Jonas Brother's being broadcast 25/8. (that's right, those shows are on so often it defies the laws of space and time)
