In some places of the world thats about all the meat they will see in a month. You would get a mad beating for not taking a shot.

I hope that means your religion makes you a vegetarian, otherwise for a religion to claim "thou shalt not eat dogs" seems retarded.

It's fine to eat any animal, provided it's not someone's pet in which case it might be morally wrong.

Personally, this may be because I don't have any pets of my own but I wouldn't have any problems with eating a cat or a dog more than I would with say a sheep or a pig. While the UK I've never seen anywhere that serves either if I ever go to China and get the opportunity to try some I probably will. However, I'm interested to see what everyone else thinks as I know a lot of people get really emotional about pets and wouldn't want to see a distant cousin of their beloved Mr. Cuddles in a burger, which I can kinda understand.

So Escapists, what are your opinions?
Personally, i wouldn't eat one because I would be worried about the taste(carnivores have a very different taste than grain or grass fed animals) and because I think dogs and cats are more useful as companions than as food(because of their intelligence) but I don't think it's wrong. I wouldn't eat octopus or calamari either, but that doesn't make it evil.
why would dogs and cats be more intelligent than other animals? I'm pretty sure sheep can make fine pets too, any animal can be trained. and you can get horse meat no problem.
I agree though, I wouldn't eat cats or dogs (or octopus), but it's all between my ears, I have no rational reasons for not eating them.
Dogs and cat's are definitely more intelligent than pigs and cows, and probably sheep as well. I don't eat horse meat because it's more useful as a beast of burden.
got anything to back that up? sheep and pigs have larger brains than cats, and dogs aren't intelligent, they're trained. they still can't reason.
as for the horse thing... that argument kindof falls apart when you realize noone uses them as such anymore for any reason besides recreation. noone rides them because they NEED to, they do it because they think it's fun. The only ones who still use horses for anything practical is the police.

Just to add another two cents, some people groups don't have the luxury of passing up a source of protein.

Depends on your morals, culture and religion. Mine? It's not wrong and my ancestors did (Korean you see) so I probably have a taste for it. I would never try it because a.I'd be bullied to hell and back, b.isn't it hard to find dog meat? and c.it's a taboo in my country.

There's nothing morally wrong about it... I just don't want to do it. >_>

(So, yea, my answer was "No, neither are wrong".)

It takes, what, a thousand times more land to grow a pound of meat than a pound of wheat? And global food prices are the highest they've ever been.

In the larger sense you'd probably have a pretty hard time making a case that eating any farmed meat is moral, but comparing traditional western pet animals to traditional western food animals I don't see much difference. Pretty sure most carnivore pet food is actually plant matter and unusable meat products, so I doubt the environmental impact varies much between them and e.g. cows.

No there isn't, as long as the cat or dog you're eating isn't someone else's cat or dog it's fine by me.

If it had an awful taste then why do people already eat dogs in Korea? Just to feel special?
They probably taste like pretty much any other animal when cooked.

OT: Wouldn't eat a cat based on personal preference, but I figure if we eat pigs, we might as well eat dogs. It's not like dogs are smarter.

If you are talking North Korea, people are eating rats. And it isnt because it tastes good, its because they are starving. I mean people in Africa aint eating their own shit because it taste good either, nor building houses out of shit because it smells nice.

Yes to both.

Cats because... well they are gods, and the internet is made of them.

Dogs because.. well.. they are more often than not nasty and stink.

Plus...

how on earth could anyone for even a moment (outside of survival conditions) think of harming animals that are so unbelievably loyal to humans, even though, too often we just dont deserve that affection.

Besides... thats what cows and chickens are for. Literally... most of our livestock animals simply would never have existed if it were not for our intention to consume them. Hell, its even possible they would have gone naturally extinct if not for our propagation of them.

Depends on the person. I'm against it but there would be others out there that wouldn't even think twice about it.

eating dogs is morally wrong! They are mans best friend, not food! have you ever met a dog? they are playfully and lovable and show unconditional love and have big puppy eyes! have you ever met a cow? they just chew on grass all day, not caring that you are there. plus theyre ugly! they are the ones you should eat!

Do I sense a reference to The Office?

OT: As stated before in this thread, it's morally wrong to eat cats and/or dogs, but on the contradiction on survival. I don't think I would have done it anyway, but tried to find a different solution of survival.

It's morally wrong (well I know it's all subjective but it'd probably be the general consensus) if the cat or dog was somebodys pet when you ate it

if not then I don't see a problem with it,
it's no different from any other meat
except pigs and chickens are especially bred to be delicious
I imagine cats and dogs would taste awful, but don't knock it til you've tried it, eh?

it just comes down to availability and cost, if say, i was doing my shopping, and there was some dog meat there in the meat fridge, and it was on special, i might be tempted to try it. who knows, i might already have tried it... i do eat a lot of chinese takeaways...

Is it MORALLY wrong? No.

Biologically, though, it's a bad idea. You generally shouldn't eat carnivores - they're likely to cause infection. Even omnivores are a little iffy, hence why you have to cook chickens and pigs longer than you do beef.
The dogs you eat are "raised" for it like we do with pigs. And pigs are smarter than dogs anyway. I see nothing wrong in eating any of them, even though I've a dog myself
