Earlier this year someone got me a Copy of Bulletstorm with the cover art missing and I didn't have a problem with it, so yes I'd say it's fine.

The question is: Are you giving them a box and disk, or the experience of playing the game? If they care about the box and disk more than the game then should you be buying them a game int the first place?

Hell, why are you even friends with them! :p

Just as long as the game doesn't have an online pass then Im sure your fine. If it does as someone else said slip a 10 in there to make up the difference.

Pre-owned isn't a problem as long as the game itself works, but personally I wouldn't use them as gifts if the cover/box looks like it's been through hell and back. I mean if they're getting the game at a big enough discount they could afford to chip in a few $ and get a empty game box somewhere.

If you get a used game that looks like an elephant stepped on the case, it looks like the person who gave it to you didn't care. Personally if it didn't have the original case I take the time to print out the cover and put it in so it looks nicer. If it's in good condition I don't see any reason to complain. In fact if they do slap them.

I don't really see any problem with it so long as the person recieving it enjoys the game, I mean if you just buy an old tattered $5 copy of some game genre they're not into then it's a crappy present

i would say it's ok, if the game in it's entirety looks like it's new... i would probably be happy with what i got,in your scenario, but i would never get a game with a tattered case for a friend, and would make sure that there is minimal scratching on the game itself

Yes, although I try to get stuff new for when I get people gifts. I'll usually buy new though, unless the disparity is like $30 instead of four or five dollars.

Providing you aren't loaded and constantly being seen to buy yourself brand new games every week only to then buy a friend a second hand copy then Im sure its ok.

If one of my friends got me a game I wanted, I wouldn't care if it was second hand or not - I'd be happier that they knew what game I wanted full stop. :)

My brother's friend had a birthday recently, and he bought him a pre-owned game for a present. I thought it was a bit too frugal of him, because the cover was tattered and it was only twenty dollars.

Is it okay to buy a pre-owned game for a birthday present?
It all depends on how the friend purchases games and if it was a game they hadn't intended on buying.

I for one never buy used. I want my games to be all shiny, new, and come with everything they are suppose to come with(booklets, ad inserts, DLC codes).

Besides, a friend would have to consult me before buying a game for me. Though, that would never happen because I and my friends don't buy things for each other, unless it is food, and even then it is usually because one friend forgot his wallet and the person paying knows they will get the money back from said friend.

If you manage to get a gift return receipt sure, but not if you accidentally open it.
And you couldn't return it if you accidentally lit it on fire, either.

Dude...

With how expensive games are new, I wouldn't blame anyone if they got me a used game.

Hell, I buy myself used games all the time...
