Let's see. You are sober, having committed yourself to a life free of the stupor of intoxication. You are level-headed and clear-thinking, at least relative to everyone else, who is apparently drunk. Your friend is shit-faced.

Who's really making the best decisions here?

"Is it OK?" Give me a friggin' break. This is like asking if it's OK for a girl not to go down on a first date. Don't ever do anything you don't want to do, especially because others have the unfair expectation that you do it. You'll regret it for reasons beyond betraying your principals. People who drink too much love to fuck with the uninitiated, so if you ever do decide to try it, you now know who not to do it around.

Abstaining from something you're not legally required to do is perfectly fine. Anyone who tries to make you do it deserves a Falcon Punch.

I was dragged along to my formal after party (Prom after party) and pretty much everyone was getting wasted and smoking and I sat on this bench for the whole night. I dont drink or smoke at all (although I am going to have a celebratory cigar when I turn 18) and I spent the whole night looking after drunk girls, making sure they wouldn't get into trouble and what not. Wasn't even thanked...

Yeah, never going to a party again. I guess it's just not my scene. I just hate seeing nice people that I know turn into morons or assholes while drinking.

Drunk logic. What they say is true and whatever they think every agrees with. E V E R Y O N E.
Which to everyone else and the sober, that's not at all true.

I never really understood the "It's more enjoyable because I'm sharing."
If you HAVE TO SHARE something for it to be enjoyed, it's not enjoyable at all. So why do it? Why not share things that are enjoyable together?

Depends on the party and the location. Obviously it's not okay to go drinking at a 5-year-old's birthday party and some people have a non-smoking house rule. You know better then me what your friend's party is going to be like so you just have to ask yourself "will he or she allow smoking/drinking?" The host is in charge and has power of that kind of thing (and if he or she doesn't then the party is out of control and that's not good).

Obviously, of course it's okay. BUT, in the real world, there is no other point to a party (besides foreplay/sex). I don't drink or smoke at all. Let me tell ya, in college, if that's the case, there goes 40% of your social life. At the very least.

So long as you're still having fun, yeah, it's perfectly fine not to drink or smoke at a party. I tend to have a couple at least when I go out to parties etc. but I definitely wouldn't force anyone to drink or smoke.

Sure its okay. You might get heckled by your friends but its not illegal or anything. Its also okay to do stuff you normally wouldn't while you are at a party. For example, I only smoke when I drink. I have never had even a puff off a cigarette when I'm not drinking but if I am at a good party I can go through a cigar or two.

People do dumb shit when they are drunk. It can be entertaining if you are the only one that remembers it. I'm usually that guy even though I can drink more than everyone else. I do limited myself to a massive degree if I have to drive though.

Just say you have to drive. Most people will leave you alone then. If I get someone really obnoxious about it when I don't want to drink I tell them my brother was killed a by a drunk driver. Its a buzz killer and usually makes them stfu. Now in my case its true but you could always lie about a friend or something if you don't have a personal story.

You don't have to drink/smoke if you don't want to. There's no party rulebook that states 'all partygoers must drink/smoke'.

Designated drivers do just fine. Though, if you're choosing not to drink, then you'll most likely get drafted into DD duty.

Hell, I spent my nearly entire high school career as the DD, and I still had a blast at parties (because I was sober enough to laugh at the drunk kids... and then blackmail them later).

Now, I drink socially at parties, but that's more because my friends have matured now and no longer drink just to get drunk.

Unless you're still under 21, why would you go to a party just to drink/smoke?

Anyway, your friend was a little out of line, but if you aren't the designated driver/former alchoholic/have an addictive personality, why not live a little?

It's ok not to drink, it's up to the person if they want to drink or not. Also parties are made to meet new and old friends, why make it a beer chug and get wasted while possible networking can be build but your too drunk to realized that you just barfed all over one of the hottest girls that everyone knows. But if you choose to drink, drink moderate and be responsible.

I can see the results are overwhelming. It's OK not to drink at a party. There's several parties where I've chosen not to drink. However I usually accept if someone offers me something unless there's a reason I'm not drinking.

I'm that person too, and yeah you mostly feel really bored I guess which is why I don't like partying... I don't know what to say to you I'm guessing this is a question posed to people who do stuff like that. I usually have one drink just to hold and maybe sip at...

I'm the person who takes care of all the shit that happens after the fact, weather someone's vomiting their gizzards out or gotten into trouble... I guess that's why I'm kept around.

Which is why when I'm asked to go I have to really be in a generous mood.

If you don't want to drink that's up to you. Personally due to medical reasons I'll never be able to drink alcohol so I get to not drink by default. It aint always easy not to Drink in college (especially in Wisconsin), but that's just how it goes

People live how they want, and not everyone agrees with how we all live. Some don't drink, party or smoke. Most do, and that's fine. It is irritating when people pressure you to drink, but stand your ground. If you don't want to then that's fine

It is ok not to drink, but this just shows how hard it is to NOT DRINK. I do not drinkj alchohol at all, and its no as easy as it should be. Its messed up but we live in a society that enforces drinking, even if just casually.
