you dont need to drink or smoke at a party. i go to a partys and clubs almost every week and so do a lot of my friends. i see lots of people who dont drink or smoke. i personaaly like to drink a few beers at a party, but i wont force you to. a good friend of mine goes often to partys with me and he doesnt always drink. i dont mind that, and neither should those friends of yours.
so the point is only drink when you want to drink. some people may look down on it, but that is their problem. go to a party and have a good time.

I just tend to accept the first drink handed to me and just hold it all night. Tends to shut people up and its provides you with something to throw in case someone pisses you off.

OT: It's absolutely okay not to drink at parties, but if you're anything like me it's a lot more boring if you don't.

Well, I like getting drunk at a party. I don't like smoking at all.

But if you're going to a party to enjoy yourself, you shouldn't feel forced into doing stuff you don't want to do. Don't let them peer pressure you into anything.

If you wanna drink or smoke, then be my guest. I'd advise against pot, but y'know.

It's perfectly possible to enjoy a part sober, but it does in some cases help to be buzzing as much as the rest of the party goers. Enjoy your hangover! :)

Of course it's okay. I personally feel incredibly uncomfortable around drunk people when I'm sober, but if that's not a problem I don't see what would stop you. It's definitely not rude or improper either way.

I mostly use alcohol for my cooking for enhanced flavours and usally don't drink and never smoke.

And people who think that being social involes drinking/smoking are just stupid, you can have fun without these things and if you are around your friends it shouldn't be a problem at all.
At least I never had the problem of being forced into drinking/smoking and it never was a reason for others to be upset about it.

Well, I drink at parties, but I don't see why everyone should. I mean, it's their life, isn't it? I go to a party to have fun with friends, not to get drunk or threaten my friends who don't drink. My girlfriend doesn't drink, and yet she still manages at parties.

Of course it's okay not to drink or smoke. Anyone who says otherwise is wrong.

It's good not to drink or smoke; it's unhealthy. In moderation, it may not be extremely unhealthy, but it's still best to stay away from it completely (in my opinion).

It's possible to have fun without drinking or smoking. I know... it sounds crazy, but it is possible.

Interesting note: drinking is bad for weight lifters. Drinking can mess with your recovery period after having worked out. So, if you work out, there's another reason not to drink.

A simple "No thanks, I don't drink" should suffice, but then again drunk people do act silly sometimes :p.
Most of my friends drink but none of them try to put pressure on those who don't

I've been to one party in which I have actually drank. My friends know that most of the time I don't drink. Though a lot of that has to do with me having to be the designated driver most of the time as well. I'm overly paranoid if I have to drive about my drinking. Most of the time me at parties means I am off by myself in a corner with a video game drinking a bottle of water that I have brought. Or reading. I'm not entirely that social. But to answer your question it is perfectly fine to not drink or smoke at a party. I should also mention all my friends smoke and I don't but that's more I have asthma and smoking irritates the hell out of it. Plus I don't like the smell/taste of smoking anything. Also, your friend was being a drunk arse.

Friends??
If they really are your friends they would know you don't drink. This is just bullshit, I mean many fo my friends have that same mentallity but they only try once or twice. Then again there are reasons why not to drink, a few: I drive, I don't have the money to buy alcohol at this point in life (at least in Finland alcohol is expensive) or then I DON'T WANT TO!
see were I'm going? If you don't feel like it, don't drink.

TBH if you're hanging round with people who think you need to drink at parties then you're in the wrong place.. its easy to have plenty tons of fun without alcohol (I don't know why you'd ever have to smoke at a party thats just weird) although alcohol does make it significantly more interesting.. people do fun things when they're drunk.. call it taking advantage but its more.. opportunistic thinking..

TL:DR - you don't need to be drunk to experience the good and bad sides of being at a drinking party so I'd say just turn up and have fun..

Thanks guys. I now have a better idea on how to handle this kind situation should it arise again.

The requirements of a party are that you socialize and enjoy yourself. How you go about doing either is generally open to your discretion.

If not drinking or smoking is a bad thing at parties then I've been doing parties wrong my entire life. Its sad that my dad is trying to fix the not drinking problem with me and he's relentless too.

You dont have to drink/smoke to be there, I once went to a friends birthday party, and they all wanted me to drink, after many times saying no, they kept persisting that i drink, to which i said, "screw you all, im going home" (I even took the birthday cake with me)
Heh, me too man. Though there was no cake, only loud music too loud to talk anyway. But I did spend the last half hour watching From Dusk Til Dawn without sound trying to add my own texts. However, after they insisted it was "a birthday party" and I "had to take a drink too" I was off and away. Needless to say I don't go to parties often...
