Good point above, why both with character customisation, if you can't do the most basic level of choosing a gender?

I know in WOW I've played as both sides, male/female and alliance/horde.

Strangely in Fallout 3 I played good as a guy and evil as a woman, does that say something deep n scary about me?

Nope, not really, I just flip between male and female when playing RPG's, just because it adds more than just good/evil replay.

i do find people being attracted to a computer generated charecter odd especially the whole anime fascination thats goin on now ...but... i do like atleast dabble in the whole female genre in games just because its boring bein a big muscley man all the time.

and plus bein a female avatar on home (for the 2mins of having it) you get to laugh at all the boys that swarm round you trying to get your msn and essentially into your pants ... funny times home is made 90% of sexually frustrated 13 year olds from what i have witnessed

I don't do it, but have no problem with people who do. It's an aesthetic choice, right?
So whatever they feel like!

I like playing as a guy, since this choice usually comes in RPGs, and I like to be able to relate as much as I can with my character. Gender is a big part of that.

I draw myself and try to create characters. So when a game alowes me to custimize the GAME-character, I always try both the MALE aswel as the FEMALE cutimizations.

There's nothing wrong with it, I play as chicks all the time, sometimes to stare them up sometimes because a character I like happens to be a girl and sometimes for storey purposes, but usually to stare them up, also I'm not into cross dressing

I have played as a female character several times in games, but I usually do it for different reasons. For games like Mass effect, Fable 2 and Fallout 3 I play as both male and female characters, but that is because I want to play it again in a different way, so I usually play as a good female character first and then an evil guy later (I usually do it this way but I will change it sometimes). When it comes to games with set characters then I will choose the character that suits my playstyle best (e.g. I play Mui in Mercenaries 1 & 2, Alexis in Evil Genius and a male Argonian in Oblivion) and don't care whether they are male or female. In other games where the decision has no effect on the gameplay other than your character, I will usually make a charcter that looks like me (like I did in Saints Row 1 & 2) but I might make a female charcter if I feel like it. I think people make to big a deal about playing as an opposite gender since I like the added choice that you get, but I might be influenced in thinking this because my favourite game(Beyond Good and Evil) has you play as a female.

How about some real options for the poll.

I played Fallout 3 the first time with a male character and the second as a female to see the difference.

The guy character I tried to make resemble me and the female character resembled the type of appearance I like in a girl, I see no issue with that, it's just a game.

My view is this.

If I'm going to spend the next 20 or so hours staring at someone's back it may as well be a nice looking female back.

Pretending to be a girl in a MMO is icky.

Controlling a female PC in a single player game is normal.

I've always prefered playing a male character. Don't know if it's my weird boyish delusion that games must contain over the top macho men with biceps that're bigger than their heads, (Chin excluded.) but I just don't get quite the same kick when playing a female. (I actually think I would've completed Heavenly Blade if it had a male lead to be honest.)
I cannot relate to a female character at any point, thus making the experiance much less enjoyable.

I don't really see the point in going out of your way to make yourself female, since it rarely changes anything, but I wouldn't laugh at someone who did. If I'm forced to play as a female, I wouldn't complain, though.
In a game like Fallout 3 and Mass Effect, it really does.

Anyway, yeah I like to expiriment sometimes.

Well I play as a chick in Mass Effect and I play as a guy in Fallout 3. Mostly I play as a guy, though. It makes the experience more true to life. I mean I'm a dude and when you play as a chick you make people think you're a chick. There's nothing wrong with it, but I play as a guy mostly just for the hell of it. Sometimes the girls have special abilities that guys don't have in games and vice versa so I want to try and get the best abilities.

I really don't see why gender choices are such a big deal in video games. They're there for that very reason: if you don't want to play as a chick, then play as a guy. And vice versa. Being a girl myself, I like creating both types. It doesn't bother me at all.

It's odd how such a simple decision as making a male character for Fable II when you're female or making mostly female characters on Soul Calibur IV when you're a guy makes you some sort of weirdo.

I honestly don't know why it's such an ordeal. If game developers wanted us to stick to our own genders, they would either give you no option to change genders at all or they'd require you to stay with your own gender.
