If you enjoy playing it then go for it, IF all you want is the Gamerscore points nothing more, nothing less, than you sir are a GAMESCORE WHORE!
I have been trying to play through Uncharted 1 and 2 recently on Crushed difficulty just so I can get my ellusive 2nd and 3rd Platinum PSN trophies (anyone who is interested my first one came from InFamous, MY GOD ITS GOOD)
But I love Uncharted 1 and 2 to pieces, in fact Uncharted 2 may have taken my "1# Most fav game ever" spot away from Secret of Mana and GTA: SA (I could never decide between the 2 of them what was better)

Uhh, where is the poll option that says: Who cares why you buy games, so long as you're having fun?
If you're playing for the achievements, and having fun, then so what?
If you're playing for the experience, achievements be damned, and you're having fun...then so what?
You're right, I probably should have included one, but it seemed pretty self-evident. There isn't really any wrong reason to buy games (with the exception of luring children into your house :p), but buying a game for achievements makes me feel kinda dirty. Even if I'm going to be enjoying the game (which I'm sure I will, even though by the fourth time around the experience will surely be diminished) I'd probably feel as if I were rushing through it just to get points. I've gotten that way with other games when I got bored of playing them, and it isn't a great feeling.

No, your the one spending up to $60 on a video game just so that you can get points which do absolutely nothing, that is your choice. Is it a smart choice? Well, that may be up to debate, but I try to reserve my judgment. Is it a wrong choice? Of course not.

If you want to do it, go for it. If you're enjoying yourself, that's all that really matters. I have to admit I have purchased a few games with the intention of just getting the achievements; however, although people call this stupid, I see an advantage in this - by purchasing games just for achievements, you often end up playing games that you wouldn't of otherwise, largely due to lackluster reviews or lack of publicity; this was the case when I bought Godfather II - I admit, I bought it for the trophies, but I ended up having SO MUCH FUN with it. Same goes with Uncharted, and that turned out to be one of my favourite games. By chasing achievements, you expose yourself to a lot more games than you would otherwise. So there, it's not all bad.

Whatever gives you joy-anyone who thinks gamerscore means anything other than, in order, 1. how many games you own, 2. how much time you spend playing said games, and a very distant third-your skill, is fooling themselves anyway.

Wrong, no. Stupid, yes. I'll never understand why the hell people are obsessed enough with the size of their e-penis that they'll go to the point of playing games they wouldn't otherwise go near, just for the sake of increasing it. It's absolutely bloody meaningless.
If you read the original post, I never said I'd be playing games I'd otherwise not go near. In fact, I think I specifically stated I wasn't going to start doing that. You're right about the e-penis though, I don't understand it either. I'm earning points that give me nothing (although the Uplay Ubisoft points system that came with Assassin's Creed 2 was a novel idea - do achievements, earn points, spend them on extra maps and such) as a reward, and at the end of the day it really is pointless. I don't know why I have this sudden new compulsion to earn them, but I do.

Yeah, I totally am :D I ended up with all the ultimate weapons. The butterfly minigame was also a lengthy and frustrating experience, but the lightning dogding wasn't too bad. Though that meant around 25 mins of pure concentration. You want to know the sickest thing? After I got them I went 'meh' and didn't even try to level for the dark aeons. Getting those weapons was just soooo satisfying in its own right.

Games with uber lame side quests include: Enchanted Arms, Eternal Sonata and Infinite Undicovery.

Some games with memorable side quests: Lost Odyssey, FFXII (oh how I loathed the main plot, it was all about the hunts for me), Last Remnant, Shadow Hearts Covenant, and Final Fantasy VIII.
Much as I enjoyed FFX for the time I spent playing it (I never finished, got to a certain boss fight that took over an hour to finish, and told it to go fuck itself after failing 3 times), I hated all the minigames. The weird temples, Blitzball, all the other crap it tried to make me do. I just didn't care enough about the new items/weapons I'd earn to force myself to sit through them.

I really regret never finishing Lost Odyssey - I was on disc 4 when something big came out (Arkham Asylum I think) and I had to trade it in for a bit of extra cash. The Backyard Battle minigame was fun, though some of them were ridiculously hard; completing an entire battle with Tolten?! Screw that noise. The shiny princeling can sod off.

A lot of people seem to have this strange idea that I'd go out and buy a brand new game just for the achievement points. For one thing, I'd never buy a game that I didn't think was going to be fun. I also only buy games that I really want these days, and rent everything else. I'm talking about buying a (secondhand) copy of a game I've already finished several times just to get the achievements. To me, it just seems like a weird thing to do, so I was asking what other people thought. To clarify: I'm not going to buy Barbie Horse Adventures just so I can get all the achievements. Believe me, I've tried, but some of them are just too difficult...

If you're lucky enough to have the money just to buy a game for that then why the hell wouldn't you? :p

Personally I can barely afford to eat most days so no I wouldn't do it lol

My opinion seems to reflect the overall consensus: if you're playing a game and enjoy the challenge of getting all the achievements, then no, there's nothing wrong with that. However, specifically buying a game to bolster one's gamescore is a tad on the obsessional side. Why not just wait to find a good game that you'll enjoy but will give you the extra points anyway?

However, it is somewhat satisfying when you hear that little "bleep bloop" and a message saying YAY YOU'VE ACHIEVED SOMETHING :D

Its like a little pat on the back ^-^

And I do like games where the developers have actually dedicated the time to creating interesting and amusingly named achievements :D

LO, ah, my signature game. I think I've played it five times now. I completed all the side quests the first time around, so after that it was all about the awesome story. ^_^ If you can, get that game again and finish it goddamit! >.<

The Backyard was very cool and reminded me of something very similiar from the Shadow Hearts franchise - good old Nautilus. Tolten was pretty weak, I only used him when I had to. He was hilariously lame during the cut scenes; funny how manly and brave Jansen suddenly appeared when Tolten joined the party.

Um...no...you...uh...what? Sorry, I'm a little confused. You had fun with Godfather II? That game has seared away a little part of my soul. The fact that I paid the full launch-day price for that one makes me weep bitter tears.

In fairness to it, it was a decent concept executed very poorly, and probably the main reason I hated it so much (other than it taking about 20 minutes to complete) was that I kept comparing it to the original Godfather. It just didn't measure up, they took a wonderful mafia sandbox game and turned it into a mishmash of half-baked strategy and badly done third-person action.

Sorry about that, had to rant a little. Godfather II is a pet hate of mine because I was looking forward to it so much, and it was a slap in the face to get such a short, half-finished product :(

Achievements have more or less destroyed my ability to enjoy games for their own merit.
How do you mean? Do you play for the achievements rather than the games, or vice versa?

For achievement addicts everywhere.

Personally, I think they're utterly pointless.
Put your Game Score and Achievements on your C.V. I dare you...

You are never a gamerscore whore until you buy avatar, the burning earth.

It gives you 100G for killing 10 enmies, 200G for killing 20 enemies, 300G for killing 30 enemies, and so on and so forth.

Rent it for two or three minutes and you're done.
