What do you mean, cause girls and black people can't be gun nuts?
True, and furthermore, just because Francis is a biker it doesn't mean that he has ever mowed someone down with a shotgun before.

(One of Louis' lines is "They all used to laugh at me when I went to the shooting range at lunch, who's laughing now?")

It's tough.

I love a good storyline and it helps me immerse and care about the characters.

but if there was a storyline, I'd just follow that and not play the levels over and over again enjoyably and just have fun.

But the fact that Left 4 Dead managed to NOT have a storyline and remain a huge success is a statement enough.

I'm OK that they dropped the storyline, it's freaking hard just to get a group that's persistent throughout one campaign. But they should have added more campaigns to balance the lack of story.

I don't think the story is really needed to be honest. I mean, yes there are certain questions that I might want an answer to at some point, but none of them have any meaningful positive impact on the game.

How did the survivors meet?

How did the infection originate?

How does the infection spread?

Why are the survivors immune?

And so on. Yet, at the end of the day, it seems right that I don't know these things because the survivors themselves don't have most of the answers. Really, the only thing that might be truly interesting is learning more about the characters themselves. They are, afterall in what amounts to a zombie filled buddy movie, and I could hardly imagine any of them hanging out together under normal circumstances, yet when their life is on the line they'll take all the help they can get.

I like my own story that all the survivors are just cranked up on pills and are running through the streets hallucinating and shooting all the innocent people around them. Fun

Without. The story is simple. There are zombies, you are not zombies. You have guns. That's all I need to know. Look how much story is packed in an RE game. Frankly, who cares about any of it? It's just fun to play. L4D got it spot on with a very limited story.

and why should bill and francis use them so good

p.s. fuck you since i just relized HEH HES RIGHT
I didn/t mean it like that, its just odd that an office worker and a college student can fire an automatic shotgun six times in a row and not have thier arms dislocated from the recoil.

I can't find a link, but AFAIK:

Bill- Obviously a war veteran. I seem to remember that he fought in 2 wars, before being forcibly retired. He didn't leave the city immediately because he could either stay and fight (and re-live his glory days) or run and be a coward.

Louis- Just a regular office worker, but either the Infected killed his wife and kid, or his wife left him. Either way, he is staying to fight because he has no-one to miss him if he falls, but he wants to protect humanity

Zoey- Film student, failing/not getting the grades she needs to get, on account of being captivated with the zombie genre of film. Huge zombie fan, meaning she knows her stuff. When the infection starts, she feels that she knows enough about the enemy to help. That and shooting zombies gets her out of class.

Francis- Biker/all round tough guy. A bit of a thug, meaning that he's in his element when law and order flies out of the window. Knows he can't survive alone, so travels with the group.

I'm fairly sure I've seen an official source to confirm/expand on this, not sure where though...
www.l4d.com?

They have character bio's there. I think we should expand on the 'Meet the...' idea put forward earlier. I'd love to see 4 mini-series, each with three episodes (Outbreak, Aftermath, Meeting the group) for each character. Bill seems to be the leader and Zoey appears closest to him, so I guess Zoey would find Bill, they'd both find Louis and they'd all find Francis.

And there's the fact that Zoey's lines CONVINCE me that she's a girl gamer. We know how to work guns, yo.

Yes, too many game developers nowadays try to wrap a story around their generic crappy games and it ends up making them crappier. Sometimes leaving the story out allows someones imagination to take over and it makes the experience much better. IE: Its the same as the 'the book was better than the movie' syndrome. You imagine a better story than Hollywood delivered, so in effect it really was better.

EDIT: I just realized this post makes it sound like I think L4D is a generic crappy game. This is not true, I love L4D.

It's there to make your own theories, like with the special infected, I think it's to do with the lifestyles of the people before they turned. Smokers could of been stoners or something, and the chemicals in the blood altered how the infection changed them. Tanks were body builders, meaning the infection had excess muscle tissue to mutate. Boomers were fat bastards, giving the infection a lot of meat to work with. Hunters look homeless, so maybe it was the lifestyle with the dirt and grime that caused a mutation.

Really it's better if it's not explained, but I do agree that showing how they meet might have been an idea, to actually connect the characters, though the opening implies that Bill and Francis have known each other a while.

Also, I agree that different characters should have different perks and flaws, for example:

Louis could reload faster thanks to being good with his hands, but suffer a marginal accuracy drop since he has no weapons training.

Bill, being a war veteran could be a little more accurate with weapons, yet in his old age have a slightly slower beatback rate.

Francis could be slightly more profficient with his beatback, while taking longer to heal as a result of having little first aid experience.

Zoey could perhaps have medical training enabling her to heal faster or for more health, but take longer to get up after being incapacitated due to not being very durable.

There was originally a story and all the segments were connected by cutscenes that would change based on how you were doing. They nixed that because it was keeping people from getting in the game.

I think there should be an OPTION to run through a story mode though, for those with the patience to do so.

Yes, yes it is. Valve have proven to us with half life 1 & 2 that there's no need for a back story what so ever. They use the idea of 'well you are this person so you should know now get the hell in there!' and it works.

I do believe that if L4D got given a back story it wouldn't be as great as it was. I'd also feel the same way if the Half Life series was given some sort of back story. (by that i am of course referring to the time between half life 1 and 2)
