depends on the situation, for example if you were getting mugged by one guy who was smaller than you but could run faster than you, you would wanna fight him off wouldn't you? No blades involved or anyhting.

Umm, it's not all pointless.

I got in a fight with and beat the crap out of the cockless bastard who seriously lied about having only a few weeks left due to Hepatitis C to make my girlfriend of 3 motherfucking years dump me to "make him feel better while he passes", and it didn't fix anything, but it sure felt good to beat him senseless.
So far they've been together for 6 months and his "fatal case" of Hepatitis C has magically degraded, in steps, according to what my ex is willing to do with him to him being an inactive carrier of A Type who can't pass it. Apparently she realised just last week that he's been lying to her about everything (She only did it because he convinced her he's the only person in the world that could truly love her and only her, and that he has absolutely no interest in sex) when she found pictures that only a slathering DUMBASS would keep on the phone that he lets her borrow. Turns out, yes, he have a MASSIVE interest in sex with multiple girls at once, and apparently is into photography.
She came to me, I got to have a delicious "I told you so" moment out of it (I didn't actually say it), and on her request, I didn't simply ignore him when he tried to start something again. It didn't end well for him that time either.
Painful man, did you 2 get together again?

Anyway, no it's not on some situations. Sometimes you just have to duke it out, find out who's top dog, show you can't be messed with. Given, there are a lot more creative and fun (psychological) ways to do that, but a good punch in the face can also be very satisfying.

All physical fighting should be scrapped and replaced with card games and risk.
No, I'm not just a YGO abridged geek. I really mean it. It would result in fewer broken bones and would force people to think tactically, thus improving the intelligence of our students.
I say card games and risk instead of something like video games simply because video games usually require some sort of dexterity, which, obviously, not everyone possesses. Everyone has a brain, though.

Also, I believe that we should bring back the medieval idea of selecting a "Champion" to fight for us. This would make fights much easier.

There's always going to be fighting whenever you put testosterone-fueled adolescents together for 180 days out of the year.

Yeah it's usually stupid, but it happens.

No no, it's best to have the decent people only be as violent as they need to be.
Way to say the exact same thing.

How violent does a decent person need to be to prevail over a slimeball? More violent than the jerk is. In a real, serious fight, you don't pull any punches. Without wishing to sound rude, your fight was more of an ego thing. It wasn't like you knew the other guy was seriously planning to murder you. If that were the case, I bet you'd have been quite a bit more violent than you were. See? Escalation of violence, man. The defending party needs to be willing to go just as far as the aggressor if not further in order to insure such a thing never is allowed to happen again. Obviously I'm not saying to kill somebody for looking at you funny, but I see nothing wrong (morally, anyway) with breaking the arm of somebody who tries to stab you with a knife. It makes it they can't stab you with that arm anymore.

I voted for depends. In my opinion, words are nothing more than hot air, so we get to choose how much weight we give to them ourselves. As such, I will never start a physical fight with some one just for calling me names. I do believe that when words do not help and somebody is threatening one of the two things any human ever really posseses in this life, namely his body and his soul, violence is sadly the only solution. So when someone physically or mentally assaults one of my loved ones (and I know that person does not share my views on words and will be mentally damaged by them) I feel I am entitled to use physical violence. Reminds me of an old Japanese saying:

If someone attacks your intelligence, leave him be. It does not mean you are stupid.
If someone attacks your courage, leave him be. It does not mean you are a coward.
If someone touches you, kill him.

You've got to to draw the line somewhere.

it's a natural response, whether it's pointless or not it's what humans do when they're brought to the edge - whatever their personal edge may be.

For the most part, yes.
Throwing your fist at someone isn't going to solve anything. In fact, most of the time it's only going to exacerbate the problem.
But people do it anyway. Why? Because they are stupid animals with little to no self control.

I actually struggle to understand how some people think being able to harm another person makes you more "manly" or increases your worth as a person, or whatever. It makes no sense.
Oh yeah, sure, you're the greatest at swinging your fists around like a chimp. And what does that contribute to society as a whole?
It's not changing anything for the better. It's not helping anyone. So what's so great about it?
It just proves you are the biggest, stupidest ape of the bunch. Well fucking done you.

Of course, there are some times it is necessary. For instance, self-defence, or in the defence of others.
If you or someone else is being mugged, or something, then it is perfectly reasonable to take down the attacker physically.
There is no other way to do things. You can't really talk a presumably armed mugger down. They have the upper hand. If you get in their way, they could seriously harm you. Maybe even kill you.

Otherwise, however, you are just being a dumb animal. Throwing your limbs about because you're too thick to control yourself and/or deal with the situation without anyone getting hurt.

I said that it depends on the situation, but I've never been in that situation. Never needed to have a fight, and my life has been pretty nice because of this. I'm sure there are situations wherein the most feasible option is violence, but we'l see what happens...

Natural selection needed it. It can also be alot of fun if done mutually. It has some other uses too. Preventing stupid people from doing particularly stupid things etc...

Violence never solves anything. It's more productive and more interesting to have a verbal war. Or simply just ignore other person. But when forced to fight, YOU KICK THE FUCKING SHIT OUT OF THEM!

Most of the time physically fighting is pointless and being a high-school student I see it a lot of the time (and occasionally I'm invovled). Arguements are meant to establish a meaning and are meant to make the other person see your point and to convince something to them, but in high-school it usually ends up being a "Whoever can say fuck you the loudest" contest as well as various other insults including "Yo momma is so..." jokes that don't really have any meaning behind them.

God, I hate a lotta people...

I have yet to find a situation where words are not sufficient. There could well be situations where you do need to fight but I have no experience in that area.
Well WW2 and the Bosnian genocide weren't solved by words. For words to work you have to say them at the right time and place, when anyone tried to stop these two events with words it was too late.

And sometimes when your too late you have to use force. Like if the league of nations stopped Nazi Germany when they attacked they're first country to stop instead of asking them to stop.
