I recently played Portal 2 on my friend's PS3, and I just refused to stop. I think Portal 2 may be better than Portal 1, despite Yahtzee, because the puzzles that are there ARE good fun, and the story is witty, immersive, and more fleshed out than Portal 1's wake-up-solve-puzzles-destroy-tyrannical-robot setup I heard it had. Yes, I haven't actually played Portal 1, how do you know?

I'm just saying, Portal 1 cut a lot of corners, while Portal 2 was developed by the entire team giving it all their focus.

Just don't go yelling at me. Please.

EDIT: I would appreciate it of you would accompany your vote with a forum post. The more posts this gets, the more likely people will rock up and vote, so please post.
I'm not sure how you can pretend to say anything about the first Portal and expect to be taken seriously.

Portal 1 had a more subtle humor. Kinda prefered that. Though Portal 2 was still really great. What annoyed me in Portal 2 was, that it was less riddles/puzzles and more "searching for the single possible place to put the portal". The stuff between the test chambers in the Cave Johnson part really broke my gameflow hard.

Portal 2s level design and story telling are more interesting I think. Portal 1 is better in terms of puzzle design I think.

Portal 1 was amazing but short and you could tell the developers only saw it as a novelty, Portal 2 is a full length game and hasn't suffered at all in quality. I'd say they're equals if only because the inter-puzzle room areas in Portal 2 did drag on a bit.

I wouldn't say Portal cut a lot of corners..
It was more of test.
To try something new and unique.

It took off on The Orange Box so they decided to take the arcade game and throw it into an entire development-retail team.

OT- I did enjoy Portal 2 more. Thought the ending was beautiful :)

Portal 1's pacing with its puzzles is better than the second game's, as Portal 2 can sometimes feel like it drags on too much getting through one room to the next, just to get to the next part of the story. Whereas in the first game the puzzles were definitely the highlight, in the second game they seem to be more of an annoying obstacle meant to pad out the game rather than a welcome and unique challenge. GlaDOS' subtlety and sarcasm are also much more funny here as one doesn't yet know that she's more murderous than HAL, and it's hard not to laugh when she passes off something threatening so casually as if it were something normal, simple and everyday. In the second game it feels a bit more forced.

The story and setting are better in the second, with a richness about them thanks to the exploration of the testing rooms from the past, with an eerie mood brought about by the obvious signs of decay of the Aperture Laboratories, and not to forget the excellent character development as well of GlaDOS, Cave Johnson and Wheatley. The electronic music is much more prominent in the second one too and I think as such it compliments the futuristic technological mood of the setting well (though Still Alive is a better ending song I will admit, its lyrics are much funnier and threatening than Portal 2's). The multiplayer is very welcome also, the emphasis on actual teamwork right from the start (when playing splitscreen both players must co-operate and press start at the same time or else the game goes nowhere) is what a co-op game should be. Not just single player with a second player but its own game and experience in its own right.

I wouldn't say either is necessarily a better game than the other but I would have to say I enjoy Portal 1 more than Portal 2. The pacing is definitely the affecting clincher in the overall experience for both and the first does things marvelously by being so short and sweet, whereas the second game drags on to the point where I was asking "ANOTHER freaking puzzle?!" way too often in the second half of the game. If the first game was that sweet and sinful slice of cake, the second was a full course meal of dessert which sounds ideal at first, but as it drags on you start to get a stomachache and wonder when it's going to end. Both are great games though and most welcome in my collection, and it's best to play and enjoy them both if you can.

Portal 2 by little. But i wouldn't say little, i'd say by medium.
I loved first one, but the second one just blew me away... I mean, just wow...
Love that game so much.

Portal 2 has the same feel, but it has more elements to get you thinking with portals. So that's where I stand.

Portal 1 was better as a whole game. But Portal 2 had better parts to it. If it wasn't for the 2/3 points in the game where I was stuck because I had to search for the tiny patch of Portalable wall to move on, then Portal 2 would have been better.

Oh GOD Portal one!
Portal 2 was kinda quirkily funny at times but overall the writing for POrtal 2 was god-fucking-awful, and the puzzle sections despite having a ton of bells and whistles were completely lackluster. I breezed through them easily.

Portal 1 was subtle, clever, concise, and practically perfect.
Portal 2 was a solid concept bogged down in horrible vaudeville "Hurr-hurr he's stupid, hurr-hurr potato" comedy antics, terrible writing that made absolutely no sense, and a puzzle section that was more reminiscent of an Action Adventure game with an amusing gun.

Ugh.

The thing that I thought made Portal 1 was its really simplistic design that Portal 2 didn't really continue. Portal 1 was far more enclosed and gave a greater feeling of being a test puppet. Whereas Portal 2 made the experience more expansive and gave the opposite effect of you being miniscule in proportion to the Apature lab. But I feel Portal 2 did drag a bit and It should have been less script and more presented narative like Portal 1.

Portal 2 was a fantastic sequel that changed a lot from the existing Portal 1 formula and are both amazing games. But It really comes down to personal preference, and I still prefer Portal 1

So Portal 2 is better because you never played Portal 1?... Makes sense, I guess.

Portal 2 wasn't bad at all, but it just felt unnecessary. The first game was everything it needed to be, and the sequel didn't really add anything except for replacing a good deal of the enginuity with more character dialoge.

ZP said it best; Portal 1 was a puzzle game spruced up with a quaint little story, and Portal 2 is mainly a story game spruced up with some puzzles.

I haven't played Portal 1 but I thought Portal 2 was a lot of fun. Loved the random, insane commentary by Cave Johnson, especially that line about lemons ;)

A few people seemed to pick up on the fact that it was wierd for me to comment about which Portal was better despite only having played one. Well done, you, but you might have also noticed that I drew a few of my points from Yahtzee's Portal reviews. Remember "crunch time at the circle factory?"
