It's bad in the same way that Grand Theft Auto is bad. It isn't child friendly at all, but it's up to the parent to gauge whether their kid will take it to heart or not. To me, it depends on the kid. I know several barely age nine who play Halo and the like. Yeah, I wouldn't want them to do so, but they're well adjusted enough not to do anything stupid. Same goes for ones who listen to rap/hip hop. The real stuff, not the pop shit that's out now.

In short, I believe that parents should be use their best judgment when it comes to their kids. Be wary, but not overprotective.

Easy buddy, I was just playing.

However, statistics that are taken almost entirely from one's own experience are almost always wrong because we exaggerate the things which are at the forefront of our minds (myself included, everyone included). This has been proven innumerable times, so as a diligent scientist I can never really take undocumented ballpark statistics to be anything other than an indication of the statistician's own perception.

Nope. Everyone knows the difference between right and wrong if you do something wrong that is your fault and no one elses.

No I don't. While I can't stand Hip Hop myself It's almost the same argument as video game violence.

I don't think it's bad for kids. I just generally think that the sort of kids that like it are the sort of kids you could quantify as bad. Probably because some douchebaggy kids find themselves attracted to the concept of music containing things like drugs, violence and women rather than the music making kids attracted to the concept of drugs, violence and women.

However, I'm not a psychologist. I don't like rap, but I don't really think that listening to rap music will make your kid into an asshole.

Depends on the song. All-in-all, it's not much worse than other genres. I will say that I personally think that destructive "gangsta" rap is more toxic vs. Black Youth, since that is what some use to define their Blackness, and thus a huge aspect of their persona.

EDIT: It doesn't hurt white kids any more than anything else. To all you housewives out there: your child was just a douche, and rap had nothing to do with it.

Welp, Let's take a trip to my highschool!

You will automatically say "FUCK YES, IT KILLS SOCIETY"

Take a look at the 3 groups
The Nerds- (around 8 percent) We are not the bad people, we don't go around doing the dumb shit others do, though we have constant jokes about it.
Punks- (around 20 percent) Skateboarders, Pot Heads, Bob Marley Lovers, y'know, those sterotypical teenagers.
Douchebags- (around 40 percent) These are the kids obsesed with rap music, and trip over their shorts they wear them so low, funny thing is, none of them are black, though they all act like it. They also don't give a shit about school. they blatenly disregard school policies every chance they get. (They are the ones who get caught doing stupid shit.)
Hick-Douches (around 30 percent) (Note that this combines the normal mindless "Country" person, and the douchebag verson) Again, like the douchebags, but with a country accent, and make me laugh even more when they try to act black, also wear 200 pound jackets when it is 80 digreese farienhiet outside.
and then the other 2%...

Who seems the most messed up out of all of them?
The douches.
What do they get "Inspired" by? RAP.
Well your made up statistics have certainly swung me!

dude's rightfully pointing out your trivial post is shitty hearsay at best, totally irrelevant at worst.

No it's not "bad" for kids. People said the same thing about jazz, and then blues, and then rock and roll, and then punk, and then pop, and then metal, and then.......you get the point. This has been happening throughout music history, a newer genre of music pops up, the older people don't like it being different, they protest it.

Well their's a big difference between rap and hip-hop and there's a lot of different hip-hop too.
SO the lady might not like Dr. Dre but I wonder how she would like A tribe called Quest

Something that I don't think anyone so far has touched on is how this happened. It seems you accidentally played a little bit of the song outloud, not exactly your fault.

So if this woman has such a harsh reaction to a small accident she's clearly worried she isn't a good enough parent to counter-act such occurences.

Plus I listened to Next Episode around that sort of age, and I'm fine.

well jazz artists (despite being involved w/ some shady subcultures) don't tend to verbally advocate things like rape or killing that ************ who's out to get me in their songs. lots of rappers condone (or at least depict) shitty poor people drug culture and tony montana shit, much like a lot of black metal dudes talk about nazi bullshit and do a lot of tremolo picking to blast beats. it'd be safe to assume random moms would hate both roughly the same for similar reasons.

it all depends. if it isn't about sex, drugs, murder, or treating women like shit, I see no real problem with kids hearing rap...
I for one think rap is total shit however, but that's just me, people have different tastes.
Just because I like actual music doesn't mean I have to like rap and vice-versa.

tbh, I think Hank Hill put it best:
"back in my day we had these things called songs. they were 2 minute stories about people falling in love or burning down Georgia..."

No music is "bad"
The message and archetypes conveyed as being healthy however. . . can clearly be detrimental if believed and followed blindly.

considering all rap is automatically better than whatever you call "actual music", think whatever man. but yeah i think context and content both matter to a large part. some dude like, say, shad (a pretty positive guy who keeps it pretty clean) i'd be much more comfy playing to a kid than like pharoahe monch (a guy who talks about some deep dark shit sometimes.)

So, black ppl don't give a shit about school, blatantly disregard school policies and get caught... Or is it just the white douchbags that act like them?

Anyway, nothing wrong with rap here. Of course some songs aren't PG so yeah I wouldn't let my kids listen to them until they're a bit more mature. Nothing funnier or worse than a kid with a mouth on them.

You're not the one who stuck your head into someone else's business to tell them what kind of music they shouldn't listen to. So clearly, whatever music she listened to as a kid made a much bigger ass of a person than hip-hop.

No media is "bad" for kids as long as they have decent parents to reinforce what's right and wrong. But a child catching wind of something intended for adults is not a major tragedy and is certainly something a child can recover from with no change in their behavior. Parents can be some of the most entitled jerks in existence. (Especially moms.) Thinking that they have a right to inconvenience everybody else around them and go off on them just because they brought their little brats with them.

But let's consider the possibility that media CAN influence a child's behavior. So what? It's not like every little change in behavior is permanent. If a kid listens to Eminem and suddenly decides cursing is fun, he's not going to be swearing up a storm for the rest of his life like he has tourettes or something. A little punishment will set his language straight. And children mature eventually. The mere act of getting older can change your personality drastically, in a good way.

I don't know that rap is bad for kids at all. It's no better or worse than any other form of music.

That said, 98% of rap/hip-hop is complete garbage. There's very little in the way of melody or rhythm to it. I wouldn't be upset if the whole genre just vanished overnight.
