My inner child cries that his favorite developer is dead. Conker's BFD and Banjo-Kazooie/Tooie... Man, it's sort of depressing.

Far be it from me to express the vies of the community in general...

But I largely enjoyed Kameo, Banjo and Kazooie: N&B and Perfect Dark Zero.

They've also made a few decent ports to XBLA.

Maybe I don't share the opinion of others.

Also as above.

But I've grown quite attached to my avatar... I buy a few select items off of the avatar marketplace.

And on the subject of Kinect sports... Rare seem to be aiming more towards a younger audience.

Maybe Kinect sports won't be completely terrible but every developer throws out some shovelware every now and then.

Rare died after their last Star Fox game. Everything after it sucked, Perfect Dark Zero was not a good game and had it not been a launch title, would have not sold very well, say if it went up against Halo.

I remember looking back at some old N64 games like Banjo Kazooie and DK64, and i just thought of what a bloody amazing developer Rare were.

Then i decided to catch up on what they're developing these days. Kinect Sports :/ I'd say they're dead, and it's a damn shame.

it might not be terrible, it might not even be bad but its still a copy of something nintendo did, same with the avatar things, its something I would expect from a start up company that was just acquired being forced to do but rare? I would have expected something with more artistry then that, its boring, the rare people love is if anything not known for something that is boring to look at

Never been a huge fan, but I'm not sure if "dead" or even "dying" are the right words, right now it seems that what they've done is sell out their old fans and the kind of games that they were made famous by, in exchange for developing where they see the money being.

As was pointed out they are working on motion control titles, quite possibly by request (and offers of money) from their current sponsors.

In theory if they can tap into the same demographics that are making the Wii sports games so successful, that will be a major finanicial success if not a critical one. It's a touchy thing, and I suspect Rare is viewed as a good developer, but not an awesome one, which means that should the whole thing crash and burn and take Rare with it, it's no big thing, but if Rare manages to succeed their in a position where they can springboard into becoming one of those "awesome" developers, even if just from a financial perspective. Rare seems to be willing to take the gamble.

I'm guessing that you can pretty much close the book on the N64 successes that made them, at least for the foreseeable future.

Oh and one final, and perhaps unrelated note. While it's also pure supposition on my part I'd also guess that the "Furry Fandom" might have something to do with it. Back during the N64 era it was far less known or mocked by the mainstream, and all of the sexualized stuff pretty much unheard of. Something like "Conker's Bad Fur Day" could be seen as irreverant and funny to the mainstream due to the perception that it was crazy and differant. Nowadays people are generally aware that there are people seriously into stuff like anthromoprhic sex, and characters from Rare games, Sonic Games, and others seem to have a massive prescence, which existed back then, but is known now.

I've always gotten the impression that Sega and "Team Sonic" actually encourage it, albiet subtly, especially seeing as they are really desperate for any fan base they can get. Rare on the other hand isn't quite as invested, and might be wanting to distance itself from this entire thing.

To put things into perspective, look at all the porn crud out there about old cartoons like "Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers" and how sexualized the "Gadget" character has somehow become accross the internet. Encyclopedia Dramatica has entire articles dedicated to that specifically that will literally make you go "WTF". If you were the creator of that work, how would you feel about it given the apparent initial attempt? We're not talking about people trying to do it just to be irreverant either, but genuine, invested, perversion. Rare might look at this and go "Okay, thanks, but no thanks. We have no desire to be part of this".

Don't misunderstand this, I actually have little against the entire "Furry" community for the most part, and think some of the artwork (including the erotic stuff) can be interesting in doses. I've read enough science fiction that the idea of sex with anthromorphs as a concept doesn't bother me all that much, since cross-species sex has always been a big deal (and we've had Larry Niven's work, Chanur, Piers Anthony and his writings, and tons of other stuff). To each their own. I can see how a developer like Rare might have a differant opinion though because they are in business, want to target a specific audience, and if they are doing anthromorphics from a specific perspective they don't want to have to chase erotic fanboys around to avoid giving the core audience the wrong ideas.

Just a theory, no real meat behind the idea at this point.

They died after Star Fox Adventures on the Gamecube (which I lurved) in my opinion. That Banjo Kazooie abomination for the 360 was one of the worst games I've ever played, and Perfect Dark Zero was the very definition of 'meh'.

Everything on the N64 was great though. Especially Conker.

You will be missed, dear friend
Starfox adventures, loved it.

Also, Nuts N' Bolts I thought was pretty fun, too much vehicle emphasis, and such tiny text.

I KNOW WHAT YOUR FUCKING DAUGHTER DID!

And who could forget context-sensitive buttons!

Did you ever play the Xbox remake? It was great, if you haven't.

Hmmm... I'd say Dying. What game are they making now anyway?

Calumon: Poor Rare... Moving companies must have hurt.
Oh how it did... :(

OT: I can't actually say they are dieing because they are still in business, but they are in a living death with out inovation or soul after everybody that had talent left the place after Conker.

Off topic: By the way, where have you been Jack and Calumon? I haven't seen your comments in awhile and your points and Jack's responces are some of my favorite

They're dying. I hated Perfect Dark Zero and I'm not even bothering with Nuts 'n' Bolts, it hardly looks like the original Banjo-Kazooie games I loved.

All I hope for is under all the Kinect and avatar stuff deep down in the heart of Rare they're secretly working on a new and awesome game.

Maybe Conkers can make a return.

I take exception to this. They started out making motherfucking Jetpac back in the day, before they were even called Rare. To be fair, they did put out a whole lot of junk on the NES, but they had some good stuff before that period of time, and even occasionally during it, even if they're mostly known for their SNES/N64 games being good. When Nintendo dropped them, though, that was the beginning of the end. Most of the people who made the great games back in the day have been gone for years.

Grim title I know but it saddens me. Rare started out making some of the worst games back in the day. Friday the 13th nightmare on elm street, who framed roger rabbit. They made my nes days a nightmare. People seem to blame it on the publisher LGN but they designed them.

Then they started making great games just amazing games. Then even later they remade conkers and the multiplayer was one of the best i will ever play.

Now Rare says they don?t need their old franchises. They also shutdown a huge rare community site for no reason. Now there working on kinect sports.

It looks grim. I'd love for someone to say am an idiot heres proof there still awesome. But just I don?t know.

Your thoughts?

Looks like I?ll never see a new tediz vs squirels war :(.
Nuts & Bolts was one of few pleasant surprises that I've had this generation. If they were working on a real game for Kinect, it might actually see me one.
