I can't believe people are still talking about this. Non of my black friends even believe it's racist and I doubt the blacks they know believe it's racist. Who even said the game was racist to begin with?

I didn't see Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton on the news protesting this game. When I go to youtube all I see are African Americans saying how they think the game isn't racist??

Where is this coming from??

I'm going to stick with Yahtzee on this one, not concerned with racism until they make the zombies have afros, and do other things.....
Yeah, if the game has the African Zombies going after fried chicken and watermelon, I might see the hot steamy racism...a bit.

But it would have been interesting to see African villages filled with middle aged, white males, earning between $35 000 and $50 000 who were turned into zombies.

Deadrising is more racist than this game because there was only one black zombie to my knowledge

Zombie brad

and all the hispanic (they looked hispanic to me) zombies were depicted as knife-weilding, same-clothes-wearing gang.

I have a have a few problems with this.

1 The main character is white. I probably wouldn't have cared about the zombies being black if the protagonist is also black. The black ally helps though.

2 The zombies are are the more advanced zombies from Resident Evil 4. They are savage, animalistic, dumb, belligerent, and barely human. It's an old racist caricature of Africans that was more common in the more imperialist age almost a century ago. (Go look at Birth of a Nation, Tarzan, or Tintin in the Congo) Once again, with an American white protagonist, it evokes imperialist propaganda from imperialist times.

3 This stereotype did not apply to Spaniards to the best of my knowledge.

4 The Africans require a white person to save/kill them, which was common theme in imperialistic popular culture in the 20's.

I don't think this was done intentionally or that the developers are being racist. I think they just didn't to the research. That would explain why in Resident Evil 4, the Spanish characters speak in a Mexican accent half the time.

Wow, this was one of the first threads I made was about this, but it's been a few months, so I guess this is okay.
In my opinion, it's not racist at all, he's not killing black people, he's killing zombies that just happen to be on the continent of Africa, you know, where a lot of black people live. In short, when something's trying to eat you're face, it's race really isn't a factor.

Guys, there was more to the original "Resident Evil 5 is racist" argument than just black zombies. These are all the criticisms I've heard about how RE5 is supposedly racist and "mocks Africa:"

You are a white character killing hordes of black zombies.

You, the white man, must save the blacks because they are incapable of helping themselves.

The virus is spread in the same manner as HIV/AIDs.

The African villagers looked sickly and diseased even before they were infected, insinuating that being black is a plague.

The black zombies act in a mindless and savage manner, insinuating that blacks are violent.

That said, I think the whole thing is a load of steaming horse shit, and people are just looking too far into things. Hell, several of those "proof of racism" arguments can be easily, logically, explained away:

The virus in ANY zombie series is spread through an exchange of fluid, normally a bite; this predates RE5.

Africa has among the poorest countries on Earth. Many people in Africa are unable to afford enough food to feed themselves. Disease and malnutrition are rampant in Africa, which is why the villagers look bad even before being infected.

They are crazed, fleash-eating zombies; zombies are ALWAYS like this, though RE has been giving us some faster than usual zombies in the last few installments.

Basically, I see where the racism people are getting their arguments...But that doesn't make them any less retarded, and prime examples of people so caught up in the concept of racism that they see it in everything.

If I follow this logic CoD4 is racist against the Russians, every WW2 game is racist against the Germans, and Final Fantasy is racist against goblins. Just because you kill someone of a certain race in a game does NOT make it racist.

This is a gaming forum, intelligence is frowned upon.

Seriously, I agree with you. The racist argument is only from people who see racism in everything. However, if the main character said racial slurs as he killed the zombies, my opinion would change... he doesn't from what I know of.

On the other side, for as many people who won't play the game because it's racist, there will be an equal amount who will, just because you kill black people. =(

Chances are 10 to 1 that this has been repeated by the majority but I'll say it too. Resident Evil 5 isn't racist. Only because of America and it's racism (which is still less than semi-current and for the record everyone had black slaves at one point except Asia). It's become so strong that now when people think racist they think "black hating $#!+" instead of "discrimination against every culture that's different." If you think RE5 is racist only because you're an American shooting Africans, in an obviously technologically weaker society then just remember, you were an American shooting the Spanish, who were also technologically weaker (excluding the island with Spanish heavies)... I could have phrased all this a lot better. Oh well my lose.
