Portal is the single most overrated game in the history of the industry. It's a 3 hour glorified concept test with some dark humor put in it.
Now that doesn't mean it's not a freaking awesome 3 hour concept test with dark humor, but the fact that so many people are willing to call it the "height of game design" honestly worries me.
But it comes from Valve, so that means it is a sacred idol of the Escapist. So I'm prepping my flameshield. A lot of good it's going to do...

No. It was certainly a great game, easily a classic and in my own personal top 5 but I don't think there can be a definitive "Best Game Ever" because you'll never get every single person to agree that one game is so totally awesome that it's awesomeness eclipses all other games.
Nope, Age of Empires 2 is still the best game ever. But maybe it's just nostalgia of mine talking, but the most fun I've had in gaming is at LAN-parties playing it.

Best != perfect, Perfect != favourite, Favourite != best.
Best implies superiority over all others, you can definitely say who is the best sprinter by seeing their times, you can say who is best at high jump by looking at how high they jump.
What is best in a video game? Enjoyment? Emotional attachment? Innovation? Most sold?
All of those things could be what you consider best, it could be a combination, who decides the weighting?
Best in video games, is subjective, not subjective enough that you can run around telling people big rigs is the best game ever, but enough that there is no clear cut best game.
When it comes down to it, my own opinion (and it is *just* an opinion) best is a game which you believe was the greatest masterpiece. For example for me that would be half-life 2, as it combined such great narrative pacing, fantastic art style, music, technival innovation etc.
However ask me my favourite game, and that would go to diablo 2, for the hundreds of hours of enjoyment it brought, and the emotional attachment I have with the music.
Do I regard diablo 2 as the best game ever? Nope, there are too many flaws for me to call it "best". But it is my favourite.

Granted, I didn't finish the game, but I did come at least over halfway through, and I really don't understand why people seem to orgasm whenever Portal is mentioned. To each their own. I didn't like it.

Once 2 or more of something in a same category is made ( films, novel, play, sculpture etc...)they can be compared to each other which determines which is better than the other. The fact that there are more than 1 means that undoubtedly one has to be the best and another worst.The best Novel DOES exist, now determining which of all the millions of novels out there is the challenge , but it does exist because comparaison exists (unless they were all made equal but that is not true ) .
On topic : portal was a really good game but not the best, and you said it yourself it was too short. For it to be the BEST game ever , i would need to be flawless or perfect even.And had portal been perfect, there would have been no need to make portal 2 because it could only be equal or worst than its predecessor.

They can be compared, but since there exists no objective criteria to rank them, there's no way to determine with is "best".krazykidd said:

its a good game but not the best ever, it is pretty short and is 80-90% tutorial which might get on the nerves of some people but for the rest it is pretty good!

It's fun and it has a pretty good story coupled with an awesome soundtrack (no I'm not talking about Still Alive) but best game ever? No, but worthy of even a 10 grade?
