I mean, I know it was short, but at the end when I thought a game with outstanding game play was coming to an end, it continued one more level, a great story kicked in, and it finished stronger than I thought possible.
Is it the best game ever? In short: Yes. In a longer sentence: Pretty much.

no. i thought it was a great game but i wouldnt call it the best game ive ever played. the short length didnt bother me either. i thought it was the perfect length. if it had gone on too much longer, i think it would have started to feel stale

Nope, maybe only if they figured out a way to combine it with the Marvel universe, a machine gun and Kate Beckinsale

I think that portal is pretty much perfect however that doesn't mean it's the best game ever.

A cardboard box can be perfect but that doesn't mean it's the best storage device ever.

Shadow of the colossuss is the best game ever, doesn't mean it's perfect, the framerates a tempremental ***** and the controls haven't exactly aged well but it still does much more for me than portal.

Does portal have you killing amazingly huge beasts with only a sword and a bow?
Is portal one of the prime examples of games as art?
Is portal one of the greatest technological achievments of it's console generation?
Is portal one of the most Emotionally moving games ever made?
Does portal have an incredible soundtrack that is put to amazing use? (Does portal even have a soundtrack?)

No, it's nothing more than a perfect cardboard box.
Correct answers would be No, Yes, "console generation? gtfo noob", debatable, and yes.

No.

But only because there is no such thing.

What is the best film ever? The best novel? The best play? The best sculpture? The best TV series?
[/thread]

OT: Yeah, not even close. Awesome, but no way is it the best ever.

This statement is false.

Once 2 or more of something in a same category is made ( films, novel, play, sculpture etc...)they can be compared to each other which determines which is better than the other. The fact that there are more than 1 means that undoubtedly one has to be the best and another worst. The best Novel DOES exist, now determining which of all the millions of novels out there is the challenge , but it does exist because comparaison exists (unless they were all made equal but that is not true ).
No, it's still true, because whether art is good or not is entirely opinion.

You can hide it by review scores, and get a general consensus as to whether it is good or not, but there will ALWAYS be people who say that the film 99% of people likes is terrible, and there will always be the opposite; people who love what everyone else hates with a passion.
In one person's opinion there can be a best ..... ever, but there can never be one set best film/game/book/whatever.

Hell no. It's certainly got alot going for it, but for fuck's sake, they already have a fully-fledged engine to run off and the game looks like that? Seriously, that's near the worst aesthetic design I've ever seen in a game. Not only that, but the game's insanely short. I don't care if you say that's a good length for it, 3 hours is NOT a full game in my eyes. That's like a one-minute funk song, it just doesn't work. I guess what pisses me off is that there are fanboys who refuse to admit that their favourite game is flawed. Every game is flawed. Get over yourselves.

In any case, there is no "best" anything ever, because "best" is objective.

The First game was fun. The second just looks like a shitty cash-in knock-off.

I'm one of those few indivuals who say Every Half-Life game except the first one, the expansions packs, and Portal is shit.

And No. It's not "The Best Game EVAR." It's more of an "Experimentation that came alive."
After all, the game was just an Experiment by Valve, it was Experimenting Valve's Engines, The Codes, The Technology it used, how people played it, ect ect.

So, it's not even a "Game" really.

It's a perfect game. But it's not the best in the world.

It only uses one real gameplay mechanic, but it carries it out incredibly well. But it needs more in order to be the best game ever. And it needs to be longer. That's why I'm looking forward to Portal 2 so much.

No. A million times no. In fact, when people ask me what the most overrated game ever is, Portal immediately springs to my mind.
I like you. Let's sit back and watch everyone rush out to buy Portal 2 and then laugh at them as they find minor qualms with it and spend more time either arguing it's:

A: The greatest thing since whatever came out last that was the best thing ever for them (Minecraft, maybe?)
B: That while still head and shoulders above all the trash that all the "Big Name Evil Soulless companies like Activision" puts out it still doesn't have the charm or "comedic effect" that the first one did.
or
C: Doesn't have enough cake jokes or "awesome" songs like Still Alive.

As we watch them we will drink adult beverages and shoot them with Air Soft guns.

I t is the 2nd best game ever. Behind Braid. If you haven't played it go play it now.
Wow, I don't know how you did it but you picked two of my top three least favorite games to pick for your top two. If you have Minecraft as #3 then we have a perfect tri-fecta of opposite taste.

I heard about the game, saw the "final boss fight" on Youtube, had the story spoiled all over the place, and still bought and played it.

That should count for something.

I agree with many people. It's on my short list of favourites but I don't think I could pick just one. Even if trapped on a desert island (with electricity) I wouldn't necessarily pick which is the best one, just which would give me the longest amount of entertainment.
