No. A million times no. In fact, when people ask me what the most overrated game ever is, Portal immediately springs to my mind.
I like you. Let's sit back and watch everyone rush out to buy Portal 2 and then laugh at them as they find minor qualms with it and spend more time either arguing it's:

A: The greatest thing since whatever came out last that was the best thing ever for them (Minecraft, maybe?)
B: That while still head and shoulders above all the trash that all the "Big Name Evil Soulless companies like Activision" puts out it still doesn't have the charm or "comedic effect" that the first one did.
or
C: Doesn't have enough cake jokes or "awesome" songs like Still Alive.

As we watch them we will drink adult beverages and shoot them with Air Soft guns.
I'll bring the beer.

The Shawshank Redemption. War and Peace. Plays suck. That giant vagina one. Undeclared.

OT: No, Portal is not the best game ever. Because that title belongs to Okami.

First off - Go and see Blood Brothers, by Willy Russell, and then come back and tell me that plays suck. Go on, I dare you.

And also, high-fives for Okami. That was an amazing game.

I t is the 2nd best game ever. Behind Braid. If you haven't played it go play it now.
Oh dear. Major dissagreement here.
Braid was not one of the best game ever made, by a long shot. The story seemed optional, and impossible to understand / relate to, the actual mechanics were poorly explained...
In fact, everything about that game was badly explained.

It was a wonderful experience, it was far ahead of the curve on many fronts, it included one of the most memorable antagonists in the industry and it spawned a whole bunch of memes.

It is also one of the two games my fiancee was willing to experience for more than three seconds, the other one being Curse of the Monkey Island.

I think it might be deemed the best concept game of recent years. Portal 2 will tell if the sequel is viable.

But is it the best game ever? No. In videogame industry, you need to look at each genre separately for that. Also, it's probably unlikely to come even close to the number of replays I scored on Baldur's Gate. The main source of Portal replayability is, incidentally, its length. You can just power it up every couple of months or so and play it for an evening. It's like watching your favoutire movie.

EDIT: Also:

Duck Soup, Flowers for Algernon, The Bald Soprano, the sculpture of Mary Magdalene at St. Peter's Basilica and Blackadder.

I'd be inclined to say yes. Not because it's the game that I have played the most, or even had the most fun playing, but because it is the only game that I have ever played in which I have found nothing that I could criticise about it.

Even games such as Fallout, Mass Effect and Gears of War which I love, I can find many flaws in, but with Portal the only dislike is ongoing and tiresome cake and companion cube jokes, nothing about the game itself.

Although I believe that I will really, really like Portal 2, I sincerely doubt it will be without flaws, it is no longer completely original, and the addition of co-op complicates things.

I am not asking people to point out their perceived flaws in the game to "prove me wrong" either, so don't waste your time trying.

Portal is the single most overrated game in the history of the industry. It's a 3 hour glorified concept test with some dark humor put in it.

Now that doesn't mean it's not a freaking awesome 3 hour concept test with dark humor, but the fact that so many people are willing to call it the "height of game design" honestly worries me.

But it comes from Valve, so that means it is a sacred idol of the Escapist. So I'm prepping my flameshield. A lot of good it's going to do...
Actually Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is the most overrated. The reason it's often thought of as the best game ever is that there were no-one to beat it because the video game industry was nowhere as big as it is today. It got the highest metascore on most sites, but also the fewest reviews of those on the top.
Also you sound a bit like a troll saying the escapist is filled with Valve fanboys who will all say yes, when by my vote the result says only 14.9% thinks that it is the greatest game ever. while 21.7% says it's not even close.

Portal was good, but it's not the best thing ever. Also there's no such thing as the best thing ever.

Ask this question in 10 years and see how many people actually remember what Portal was.

Best? No.
One of the best? No.
Excellent? No.
Good? Yes. It was a good diversion and worth the $15.

No, I only played it because it was on a Steam offer for very little, I found it dragged, didn't do anything particularly funny for me and I rapidly got bored and stopped playing. Then again, there's not a single Valve game I've ever enjoyed, so I guess it's only to be expected.

No.

But only because there is no such thing.

A best does exist...
A perfect does not exist...
Portal was in my opinion the best puzzle game I've played.

no, not the best game ever, but no game is the best game ever. it is basically a game all games wish to be, and the perfect example of a bloody brilliant game. knowing valve, portal 2 might be even better, as the only thing that wasn't perfect in portal was the lack of multiplayer (and maybe the length, but i'm not so sure about that)

Decidedly not. Not that it was bad AT ALL but I just find it impossible to pick just one game I'd quantify as "the best." Games, like anything these days, come in all shapes and sizes and depending on my mood, I'd take one over another. For example, I'm working my way through Super Mario World right now because I find it a good pick-me-up game and I've been a bit down lately. But someone in the same situation might choose something altogether different like CoD or even FarmVille. It's really in the eye of the beholder.

Hell no. What Portal was was a physics puzzler that provided a decent diversion for a few hours when I had nothing better to do with my money.

It was OK, but I would find it hard to stretch 'OK' to 'great', nevermind 'greatest of all time ever!'.

Don't get me wrong, it's awesome, and pretty flawless for what it does. But the best game ever? Nah.
