Was it a fun idea that killed some time. Yes
Was it the best game ever. No, there is never a "best" any thing, and if there was, Portal wouldn't be considered, its amazing but nowhere near godly status.

I mean, I know it was short, but at the end when I thought a game with outstanding game play was coming to an end, it continued one more level, a great story kicked in, and it finished stronger than I thought possible.
No, it was a great game, because it didn't do much. Really, the only thing it tried to accomplish was a single gameplay-feature (the Portals) and minor story (those brief background moments such as the writing on the wall). This, coupled with the polishing of a big developer, made it a solid game, one that accomplished everything it wanted to because of the small amount of things it tried to do.

Games such as Portal should not be compared to triple A games and other bigger indie games based on the fact that it did not do much. Portal is a rare game, its the size of a minor indie game with the polishing power of triple A and i do not think there are many games that share the same profile as Portal. This "indie-game + triple A polishing" is kind of what the Extra Credits guys were going on about when they talked about merging the indie-industry and the AAA-industry.

A great, solid experience? yes. Best game ever? no.

No.

But only because there is no such thing.

What is the best film ever? The best novel? The best play? The best sculpture? The best TV series?
Best film is the Godfather, Best Novel is the Lord of The Rings(take your pick), best play is 12 Angry Men, don't know anything about sculptures, best TV show is Seinfeld. Best game would be harder but Id say it's between Tetris, Super Mario Brothers, Legend of Zelda, Doom, Grand Theft Auto, or World of Warcraft.

It is, but only for me. My friend hates it. So the answer is both yes and no.

As latenightapplepie said it: "What is the best film ever? The best novel? The best play? The best sculpture? The best TV series?"

It is all subjective.

Portal was hilarious and awesome, but not the best game ever.
But since i really enjoyed it, i didn't use the poll (since the only positive one was "yes"). It there had been a "close, but no", then I'd voted that one.

But yeah, i myself can't even say what's the best game I've ever played. It just so difficult to decide.. they're all great in a different way.
If i had to say, then I guess Mass Effect 1. That game gave me goosebumps so many times...loved it.

Probably agreeing with most people here but despite Portal being a fun little way of wasting a few hours it is no where near the best game in the world to me.

It was fun and different but after a while it got a bit boring. Definitely not the best game ever though.

1) Monty Python and the Holy Grail Saving Private Ryan
2) All Quiet on the Western Front The Ilyad
3) Rosencrantz and Gildernstern are Dead Les Misreable
4) ...ok you've got me there. David
5) Firefly Futurama
"Best" is all a matter of opinion. Thats why there is no best, or greatest. Just iconic and memorable.
Not everyone believes that, it's also just an opinion to say there can be no best of anything. I don't see why not though, it's possible to have an objective opinion and not be biased. Don't get me wrong though, 99% of opinions heard/read are all personal and not many people can get to that state of mind where they won't be effected by favouritism. Also, I don't know how you would explain things like music, but we know some melody's are stronger than others.

The greatest is just really popular or the impact it had on life, basically iconic or memorable. Of course, these are usually over-rated because it was new at the time type thing. The most powerful however is the most powerful, that's how I think things should be judged. I will understand if no one here agrees (I'm not even good at going into detail so I can't prove it :p) but I really doubt it's impossible.

Best game "ever" implies that it's the best game that has ever existed, exists now, or will exist in the future for every gamer in the world at all times in all ways etc. While it was interesting enough to get me started, fun enough to make me keep playing it, challenging enough to make it a... challenge, and atmospheric enough to make it more than just a puzzle/shooter, I can't in good conscience say that it's the "best game ever' because it's not. There's at least someone, somewhere, at some point, who thought that portal was (at best) meh. I disagree with them, but their opinion matters just about as much as mine, so it should be taken into account too.

Portal is a fantastic game that seamlessly marries the mechanics of a shooter from the first person perspective (someone should really come up with a name for that) with the brain teasing of a puzzle game. Combining that with Valve's superior writing department and level design, and you have some sort of a meta-game that, while not the best game ever (I refer to my previous paragraph), is so fantastic that everyone should try it at least once just to see for themselves if they like it.

...... And I pray to every god I can find on Wikipedia that Portal 2 doesn't kill the franchise.

No, but neither is anything else. How would you measure this? Even if a metric were to be possible, we certainly don't have it yet. We haven't even figured out this concept for really ancient media like painting or writing. We know a bad piece of work when we see it, but when it comes to "which is the ultimate piece ever created," we are still having fights about that.

Portal is a phenomenal game to me, but I'm sure there are plenty of people who aren't looking for what it has to offer, and wouldn't put it on their top N list.

I never really got the hype over Portal... it was fun but it took me all of an hour and it was actually rather low on polish as far as I'm concerned...
