But only because there is no such thing.

What is the best film ever? The best novel? The best play? The best sculpture? The best TV series?
1) Monty Python and the Holy Grail
2) All Quiet on the Western Front
3) Rosencrantz and Gildernstern are Dead
4) ...ok you've got me there.
5) Firefly

In my opinion, yes.

It is not my personal favourite (that would be Bioshock), but I do think it is the best game to be made thus far.

No. There is no "best of all time" to me.

It's an iconic game though. It's pretty short, and after the first bit you essentially know all you need to know in order to beat the game. That said I thought it was an excellent game, the mechanics are solid, and it is a game that will proabably be stuck in our memories forever because of GlAdoS and "Still Alive". It's...unique. The extra challeneges are fun too (and extremely tough in many cases).Portal 2 is looking to have a lot more depth to it though, as well as bit more (not that it needs it) story. Co-op is also a welcome addition. If the execution is just as good, Portal 2 might even end up being better.

It's a classic game but it's not the best.

Ask this question in 10 years and see how many people actually remember what Portal was.

Best? No.
One of the best? No.
Excellent? No.
Good? Yes. It was a good diversion and worth the $15.
It had a good idea with good execution, and did what it set out to do. But it went beyond that. Ask people ten years from now which characters they rememeber. Bet you a week as your personal slave (ten years from now) that a lot of people will remember GLaDoS.
"Still Alive" is practicly a gaming anthem right now, just about every gamer knows what game that song is referencing, and we'll be hearing it for a long time to come. "The Cake is a Lie" will proabably go down as one of the most memorable lines from a game ever, and the companion cube, despite it's fate at relativley short existance by your side, is a memorable "character" too.

Portal isn't just a game at this point. It's one of those rare games that found a way to engrave itself into gaming history with a unique experiance we haven't really seen before.

Does that make it the greatest game ever, no (see start of post) but it has such a memorable nature for most gamers that it will hardly be forgotten.

1) Monty Python and the Holy Grail Saving Private Ryan
2) All Quiet on the Western Front The Ilyad

5) Firefly Futurama
"Best" is all a matter of opinon. Thats why there is no best, or greatest. Just iconic and memorable.

No, it's a good game, but no not the best.
I don't think the best game ever has been made yet, but if we're talking about our favorite games of the now and claiming they are the best.
Then the first Mass Effect is the best game ever.

It's a bit like Tetris, in that it's probably as close to perfect as you can get, but it's not the best game ever.

Just to clarify, by perfect I mean that it is impossible to change anything to make it better without changing the core parts of it or adding anything major enough to make it a rather different experience/

For example, a perfect carpet would be one with a simplistic design and absolutely no damage on it. However, if I then offered you a choice between said perfect carpet and an imperfect Rolls Royce/Ferrari/Whatever your favourite car brand is (i.e. with an almost invisible dent in it), you would probably choose the imperfect ultra-car over the perfect carpet.

To apply this to Portal, there is very little you can change to make it better without straying from the intended simple format. It's short and sweet, with very simplistic mechanics. I expect Portal 2 will be the better game, but I doubt it will be "perfect" as with online co-op, all the new features and the longer amount of playtime, there will undoubtedly be some problems. However, if Portal 2 is indeed as good as pretty much everyone assumes it will be, it will be preferable to play that over Portal, just like in the example of the perfect carpet and the imperfect ultra-car.

And now, to balance out that semi-wall-o'-text, here's an awful joke.

It was a fun few hours. Not even close to the best game ever tho.
Exactly. Great concept and fun to play but it wasn't even a full-fledged game really, more of a concept demo. it good and it certainly makes the top 100 list of interesting games but that about it.

He best game ever? No
One of the best games ever? Yes

There can?t be a single best game ever; there are too many of them and too many different types to properly compare. It is easily up there as one of the beast games though.

No. Portal is not the best game ever. It is certainly a great game that just about anyone could enjoy, and would be one of 3 games needed to be played before one dies, but it is not the best game ever. It's probably the best FPS to date, though.

Dude; the game is 3 hours long, and that's if you really suck at it.

I thought it was a cool little experiment with physics, but I wouldn't say I really enjoyed it.

It's an ok way to waste a couple of hours, but nowhere near the best game ever.

actually no hes right, there is no such thing as "best" since it is dependant on whos opinion. like people who think halo is the best game ever will say it is, and people who say COD is the best game will say so, but does that mean they are both wrong?

There is no such thing as best and basing on my personal preferences its far from my favorite game. I liked it, it was a very fun experience, but there are a lot of games i would rather play.
