In most cases, religion doesn't cause the problems,
Back to the original question about whether there is a right religion or not. The question is left open because of a lack of context of right. Is it more right in what it teaches over other religions and in what context, Is right a rigid construct, where there are absolutes, or is it as a few of the others pointed out, is it right because it works for you?
It's fun to ask the questions and see what insight others have to offer. Personally i think religion helps society, create a moral guideline for a few people to follow, i think it also helps people cope, taking control out of their lives and displacing it somewhere else. Isn't easier to think everything happens for a reason because there's some sort of plan than acknowledging a fault in your own life? Personally i think its wrong for someone else to think they're above someone else because of a given contextual reason.("you're going to burn because you don't believe" or "you should join us because of [given reasons])
Reasoning is it's people who interpret religion, it's how they interpret ideas, beliefs, verses, etc. that creates the problems. An example of diverging ideas is all of the varying branches of christianity.Flunk said:Religion has caused many problems over the years and I think we're at a point of development where we no longer need it to tell us what is or isn't right.
It's good that you bring that up, but you cant exclude all of the other social institutions, (i.e.educational institutions, laws, cultural values, families, peers, [the media; which includes and is not limited to movies, ads, television shows]) these things tend to teach social norms and values for a given context whether you think so or not. Some create problems, some resolve problems.(an example of a problem the media may perpetuate on accident is, the ideal size, color, weight, hair color, etc of women, this may instill negative feelings of self in women whom don't fit in a certain "category")Kiutu said:Religion is evil. Stick to your own personal beliefs/idealogies/e.t.c. You should not need groups and buildings telling you what is right and wrong.
