You really need an option other than "yes" or "no." For me, simple answer is that I love their software, but have little interest in their hardware (handheld aside).

I'm kinda fond of them in principle (the SNES was my first rig), but I haven't cared for them since.

On Topic: I never really cared for Nintendo in the first place. I mean I'll still play the occasional old game but I haven't really been wowed by a lot recently. Splatoon, Bayonetta 2 and ZombiU are the only games that actually even slightly amused me.

I don't care about Nintendo. Really at all. I don't really have any great love for the company. Sure, I can think of a few games I have played on the NES and SNES that were great, but I've been a Playstation player since the PS1, and I'm pretty happy with the system.

Now, don't misunderstand. I don't hate Nintendo. I doubt anyone does. Nintendo is certainly a pillar in the gaming industry and pretty much single handedly brought it back from the brink. It has many classic games and iconic franchises. Hell, I've suggested more than a few parents buy a Nintendo console for younger children even recently.

It's just that I left the company behind. Nintendo sees games as toys and only as toys and you can tell. But many of us are hungry for more than toys. We want the medium to evolve and grow. We want them to be taken seriously and see as a legitimate form of entertainment, like movies and music. Why else were so many people singing the praises of games like The Last of Us?

Of course there will always be a place for toys. And Nintendo has certainly earned it's own wing in the museum of video games.

As for the NX, I'm not exactly liking what I'm hearing. It sounds like some sort of Frankenstein's Monster of a console. Like they couldn't decide what they wanted so threw a lot of things together. I sort of get them wanting a focus on handheld aspect considering the success of the DS/3DS and design of the Wii U, but I'm not sure this is a wise gamble. Mind you I disliked the Wii and didn't care for the Wii U.

But whatever, let the toy-makers create toys. That's what they are good at.

I do like Nintendo games but I hate how restrictive they can be. I'm not talking about censorship either; Nintendo seems to hate simple options menus. Part of why I love the Zelda remakes is that they give you the option to toggle between using standardized controls or using the awful gyroscope. Twilight Princess HD is the only version of the three releases that has an actual brightness slider too! What's most baffling is how the 3DS is Nintendo's first handheld that has a freaking region lock.

I really like Nintendo games for the most part and I'm looking forward to finally seeing the NX reveal...at the Tokyo Game Show in however-many months. I grabbed my Wii U on launch and I still have yet to get a PS4 or a PC capable of playing things more complicated than 2D indie darlings.

Hi guys, local lurker here.

I know we're a little past the Nintendo doom and gloom days, especially with the announcement of the NX, but I wanted to ask a very honest and general question to the people here.

The list goes on and on. After a largely mishandled console, after the creator program and Youtube copyright strikes, virtual console prices, censorship, region-locking, amiibos, and misuse or growing track record of bad first party licensed games (Star Fox, Other M, Galactic Federation)... do you like, or care about Nintendo's well-being in the future?

In your opinion, is Nintendo one of the last bastions of fun and wholesomeness in games, or is it a company stuck in a past that the world would soon be better without?

Let me know your thoughts.
Largely mishandled console, I'll give you that, but it's only been mishandled in marketing and initial lack of games, the Wii U is actually a great console with a bunch of great games on it. Splatoon is the most unique shooter of this gen, Pokken Tournament outsold Street Fighter V, Xenoblade Chronicles X is one of the best open world games of this gen, etc.

Their youtube policies suck, yes.

What is wrong with the virtual console prices? Are people really complaining about that? ... they cost bugger all on the Australian E-shop...

There really isn't that much censorship, well not censorship that matters. Religious stuff is covered up, and over-sexualised stuff is censored, it's not that big of a deal. People were mad about the petting mini-game being taken out of Fire Emblem Fates, but the only thing actually taken out was the little icon that popped up when you rubbed the stylus on the screen, the cutscenes actually play out in full, and make all the same sounds and facial expressions as if you were "petting" them.

Region-locking sucks, yes, but prior to this very console generation, everything except the PS3 was region-locked in the home console market, everything. Nintendo was actually the first to have no region-lock with their handheld line. So the Wii U was only doing what everything else did at the time (Do remember that the Wii U released 2 years before not having a region lock was the standard thing...), the backflip on the 3DS though, does suck big ones.

Amiibos are literally only a problem in the US. Japan, EU, Australia... we are overstocked on amiibos, you should be blaming this one solely on Reggie, and not on Nintendo as a whole.

Growing track record of bad first party games? Other M wasn't a first party title (and it had favourable reviews), Star Fox Zero has mixed reviews and a general mixed impression - some people like it, some people don't, Galactic Federation hasn't even released yet so you can't say whether or not it is bad.

I love Sony, I love Nintendo, both of them do some pretty fucking stupid shit sometimes, and I certainly don't think that Nintendo does stupid shit any more often than either of the other 2 big companies (Sony, MS). I am excited for the NX because I loved the Wii U, and can't wait to see what they have lined up.

Uh...these seem like total extremes. And why are these the only two options?

"Last bastion of fun and wholesomeness in games" Last bastion? Seriously? Come on, now. Good lord. That's a bit[footnote]And by 'a bit' I mean, good gods that's extreme.[/footnote] hyperbolic, don't you think? Especially since 'fun' is subjective. (and, I'd argue, many devs do many of the things Nintendo does, but better) And define 'wholesome'. There are swaths of family friendly games out there, many of which are not made by Nintendo, nor even on any of their systems.

"A company stuck in the past that the world would be better without" Can't we admit that Nintendo is stuck in the past without resorting to saying they have to go the way of the dodo? Can't we admit to their faults, asking for improvement, without wishing their demise?

This whole topic seems so odd. Are you looking for singing praises for Nintendo, reaffirming your love for the company? Or are you looking for criticisms, reaffirming your disdain for the company?

I'm very confused.

Is there still love for Nintendo?

After Starfox Zero, I'm just going to say Zelda Wii U better not only be the best Zelda game ever made, but one of the best games to come out the year when it releases, period.

I voted yes. Although, more poll options would have been appreciated. I'm very split on Nintendo these days.

I can respect them as a decent business (except for their lack of Wii U support, amiibo shenanigans, and complete disregard for how internet culture works) in an industry full of publishers pumping out half finished games with $40 season passes, but I've only ever been interested in 3 things from their developers: Metroid, Zelda, and Pikmin. (The first two of those are some of the very few media franchises I still feel emotionally invested in, and the latter is at the very least a creative take on the RTS genre.) Their other stuff doesn't really draw me in enough to either constantly buy into the franchises or sell me a new system.

The only reason I bought a Wii U in 2014 was because nothing specific for the other two consoles looked appealing IMHO. (As is still the case. Until I heard the new DooM is actually good, I didn't even plan on upgrading my aging PC within the next year.) The Wii U at least has a few 1st and 3rd party exclusives I was willing to buy a new console check out.

Will I buy an NX, though? Definitely not until I see what they will do to make sure it doesn't follow the Wii U's footsteps (so maybe two years or more into its life cycle). One reason I got a Wii U because Zelda would be out in a year. (The hindsight is hilarious, yes.) I'll buy a copy for the system I own, not some unproven, potential money sink. Until I do decide, I'll grab a physical good of whatever NX game looks interesting to me, but could be rare within a few months due to Nintendo only printing 6 dozen copies worldwide.

N3ds, yoh. New Pokemon, Monster hunter generations, and who knows what else to look forward to. I spend much time standing by to stand by in places that are normally dreadful to go (DMV?) so having a solid handheld is excellent.

Yeah, they aren't perfect, and I'm pretty less than thrilled about how fucking hard it is to get a Lucina Amiibo that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, and comes in the mail (I hate ordering. I like brick and mortar hunting grounds, but this is ridiculous.) but they provide joy, and entertainment.

As a business they can be kind of dickish and anti consumer, but that's no different from the other big AAA companies. As for their products, they're okay. I have a 3DS and Wii U which was me getting back into Nintendo after several years (the only previous consoles I owned were Gameboy and Nintendo 64). I've gotten a lot of use out of my 3DS and I use my Wii U on a semi regular basis. However the reason I bought these consoles was for the classic Nintendo IPs and so far they haven't really delivered. Mario and Yoshi games have been really bland. No Metroid. Kirby games were decent time wasters but nothing special. Zelda games were mostly rereleases, although I'm actually okay with that having never played Windwaker or Twilight Princess before and not owning a N64 any more.

This generation has kind of put me from "Yay, Nintendo nostalgia" to "I'm kind of done with these guys".

Next gen handheld I'll probably look into, but I have no interest in the NX.

So to answer your question of whether I like/care about Nintendo I'll give a non-committal "ehhhhh".

Oh Nintendo. How I hate thee. Let me count the effing ways. The selling off of Rare was the beginning of the slow downfall. I used to be a huge Nintendo fanboy but then, ever since that very pretty girl in green called Xbox smiled cutely and beckoned to me did I start to ditch you. And I do not regret running off with her and her equally beautiful and high-spirited cousin called Xbox 360 even though she sometimes went away suddenly for long periods of time, talking about Red Rings or whatever.

1. You Sold Rare Off to Microsoft The very people who were partly responsible for propelling your little 64-bit console to greatness. I don't know why the hell you did this, but it's clear that you screwed up BIG time. You hear me, Nintendo? Big time.

2. You Made the Wii And thus polluted all of gaming with its super behind-the-times hardware, dumbass name, and utterly unnecessary and sometimes downright annoying motion controls which you forced multiple developers to shoehorn into your games, not to mention your total focus on the "casual" audience. Not only that, you almost completely ignored online play, which wouldn't have been so bad but most all of the games for the Wii sucked ass as well. Oh, and speaking of Wii games...

3. You Fucked Over Project M You shut them down and drove away so many fans and players of it out of your own sponsored tourneys and have tried actively to kill a mod that made your shitty Brawl game infinitely better. PM was one of the only redeeming things about the Wii. One of the only reasons why I would have considered getting one, but you had your little corporate tantrum and drove away a team of passionate and creative game developers and (tried to) kill a growing and friendly and awesome community.

4. You Made the Wii U To be fair, the Wii U had a few things going for it. I particularly liked how one could still play the console even if the TV wasn't really available. That is cool. But that was it. The controller was clunky. The online play was still outdated, the hardware was still utterly stuck in the past when many devs have since moved on, and the games lineup sucked. Even moreso than the PS4 and Xbox One.

5. You Decided to Be an Asshole on Youtube And somehow even worse than EA and Ubisoft, stopping players from actually promoting what crappy games and IP's you still have. Even when you promised NOT to send out copyright strikes and take-downs to Mojang, you still went right ahead and did it anyway and we've yet to hear back from you. Un-fucking-believable.

I only really get Nintendo consoles, and I plan on getting the NX as soon as possible...

So yes, I still have love for Nintendo. Although I do agree that they've been making some bad decisions lately.

I'll always love Nintendo for what they did. The games they put out now are homogenized to the point where I'd get bored with them if I owned a Wii U. The only thing that I'm interested in by them now is Pokemon, and having recently moved to the Metagame with Showdown online, where you can build teams with perfect stats in seconds, I see most of the games as fairly useless. The Aloha region looks nice aesthetically, and I'd really love to run around it, but what doesn't get used around here gets re-sold to buy new games, and the 3DS was last used for ORAS. So without a console, I'm not playing Sun and Moon, Showdown will get the new Pokemon so I can play around with them and I'll watch KingNappy's playthrough on Youtube.

Other than that, it's mostly just the memories now. They're really just...boring. (I hate Zelda so I'm not excited for that awesome new one.)
But I picked yes, because they did so many great things, I'd still call them allies.

Yes, Nintendo has done some crap in the past, and continues to do some now (the Youtube thing being the one I find most onerous).

But I also recall this [link]https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=6&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwistrzUlKTNAhVRw2MKHTK6B70QFgg_MAU&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.polygon.com%2F2013%2F7%2F5%2F4496512%2Fwhy-nintendos-satoru-iwata-refuses-to-lay-off-staff&usg=AFQjCNFNMx2jWt7MKgxKIbgAmQWZeo1Yhg[/link]

and this

[link]https://www.destructoid.com/platinum-s-inaba-bayonetta-2-wouldn-t-exist-w-o-nintendo-235541.phtml[/link]

...And some of the few remaining characters in video games who can genuinely be described as "iconic", despite Ubisoft's ill-advised attempt to slap that title on everything.

And despite the Wii's slip into shovelware, I think it was a much-needed wake-up call to Microsoft and Sony that there was more to the market than just sheer hardware power and grimdark. That neither has entirely heeded that call as yet is unfortunate, but at least there are hints around the edges.

I think the industry is better for Nintendo being out there, and I'd hate to see them go the way of Sega. I hope they prosper.
