Female, don't care about the sex of the protaganist.
But I do believe a game in this day and age should always give you a choice.
Most of the time I will play a female, especially if you can customise them because I just think they look hotter tbh.

doesn't matter cause we all know Masseffect 1 and 2 both are outstanding games that let you choose and its fun no matter what.

Its not cause a cahracter is male or female and that is a shallow way to look at it. Its if they game was good or not. If you didn't enjoy it then its the game not the fact you were male or female or both [no example but there is bound to be one].

I dont care if im male or female (im a male btw), it really doesnt matter at all to me.

However if i can choose my gender i usually choose female just because there arent that many female protagonists out their compared to the latter.

Doesn't matter, but if given the choice I'll just about always pick male. I love Metroid though, so I'm perfectly fine with playing a woman.

As with most games, if the gameplay is quality, I don't care. That said, I dislike the majority of female player characters because they're usually glorified sex symbols or one-dimensional (though a lot of male leads are entirely one-dimensional as well).

If I have a choice, I generally choose to play male, since I am one. Plus, most RPGs that allow choice also have much better equipment styles for the males.

It doesn't make any difference to me. If the prerogative of the game is to move the story with a female protagonist, who cares?

I always wonder, what would the gaming landscape be like now if Spartan 117 was a woman?

So, the recent release of Bayonetta has had me thinking about something.

I tend not to enjoy most video games with female protaganists... Okay, that's not true. I've never played a video game with a female protaganist that I enjoyed in my entire life. A case could be made that female video games are notorious for being unlikeable, either for being helpless damsel in distress cardboard cutouts or for being complete and utter bitches, but I feel like even if a game had a strong female protaganist, then as much as I would be happy for the step forward for equality I would still hate it.

For me, it's important to be drawn into the story and become immersed into it, to really picture myself in the place of the protaganist. Female protaganists in games never seem to call out to me. The gender gap is too great for me to cross and immerse myself into the character. I can't relate as well and just gravitate towards games with male protaganists.

So, is this something that most gamers identify with, or am I just a sexist bastard? And does it matter if you're a man or a woman?
Beyond Good and Evil is a hot tip.

I don't have a problem with playing a female lead, but I tend not to play games with a female lead because they tend to suck. Bayonetta is probably the exception.

I'm a man, and I honestly don't mind either sex as a playable protagonist. Hell, on games with character creation, I go about 50/50 (or even 40/60, skewed towards female).

I don't mind playing as a woman, but most games I actually play have me as a man.

Recently in saints row two, i created a man, yet outfitted him as a female prostitute. I always want the character to be as outlandish as possible, and alot of games where you play as a female have them dressed stylishly (usually for the most appeal to male gamers). I don't enjoy that as much. Male protagonists seem to have the oddest style of clothing (such as my call girl getup in SR 2, or the panzer tank worth of armor most FPS heros are encased in) appear to me to show more personality than most female characters (other than the latest SM demoness with the proportions of a very arousing schoolteacher) that are in video games.

Of course I did have a female character in SR 2 that I used for about ten collective hours before I swapped out the game (gamefly). It was named fredo, was grossly overweight, had the voice of a ghetto male and went around naked air jerking to old ladies.

And then throwing them into traffic.

It doesn't bother me, i've never seen the character as a reflection of me, but always as someone i controll do do stuff.
It's the same with movies, i dont' care if it's blade or underworld, (one has a male vampire killing vampires the other have a female vapire killing vampires in case u missed out)

In RPG, choice-ish games, like KotOR or Mass Effect, I'll have two playthroughs. I'll go once as a guy, modelled on me who'll try and be a good guy, then I'll play as an evil woman. Evil women are more fun, aren't they?

Doesn't bother me when I don't have a choice, but in RPGs or MMORPGs where you create your character, I am more likely to create a female character. Having said that though, of my six chars I had in WoW, the ratio was equal, though the first two I made were female.
I don't play WoW, but, in character creators, I usually pick the girls, 'cos it's fun to beat some evil henchmen down.

(By the way, is that tattoo in your avatar YOUR tattoo? If so, props man, that's sweet.)

Mirror's Edge is a game with a great female protagonist. It IS 99.9% first person, however, so the only real indicator of your characters gender is her breathing/grunts and speech. However, in the cut-scenes/dialogue, Faith is quite a good character, in my opinion. She isn't a stupid large-breasted bimbo, "I'm a woman, hear me roar", or any other form of attention whore.

Also, games like Fallout 3, and Mass Effect give you the option to play as a male or female. Usually, I choose male, but sometimes I play female for gameplay reasons (such as the Black Widow perk in Fallout 3, which allows you to seduce certain men).

To sum it up, gender is a small factor for me when I'm deciding whether a game is good or not, unless there is a female character who is obviously just there to whore attention.

Not bothered, unless they turn out as some ridiculious cliche, ala Gears or Bayonetta
But what if you got to play as a chick in Gears!? Or if the lead in Bayonetta was a guy!? Those would be the weirdest games ever...

OT: Never bothered me, when given a choice I make one of each most of the time. I played as Lilith first in Borderlands because I like stealth. If Brick was stealth I'd choose him first. I never really cared.
